Wow, very impressive indeed! You did the 3D work in Blender? But you shouldn't have gone to the effort of redrawing them, I'd have given you the images in another format if you'd asked for them! Thank you! And yes, I make the designs in Adobe Illustrator, although I've been told you can get the same result using Inkscape. I made a tutorial documenting the process I use, if you're interested: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=67532 Go right ahead! I'd absolutely encourage you to have a go at your own designs! The outfit Hawkeye wears during the first two-thirds of the film? That's not the same as the other SHIELD uniforms as far as I can tell, it's some sort of tactical vest over a dark t-shirt, but it's a good idea! I've added it to the original post. I'm always looking for new ideas!

Yes, having now seen the figures in the flesh I'm wondering if there was some sort of miscommunication or quality control issue with the printing. It's so dark that I really can't believe that it's what the designer(s) were aiming for. The barding is a great idea! I've updated the original post to include an image for it, I hope you like it!

Very nice! Have you thought of using this hairpiece? http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=87991 Personally I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get any of the SHIELD agents in the sets. Since the first run of the Batman line has a couple of nameless Arkham guards, I don't see why a large Avengers set couldn't have figures of Fury, Hill and Coulson. If they ever do a giant heli-carrier set I want to see the SHIELD agents!

TUTORIAL: Designing torso prints in Adobe Illustrator
ED-209 replied to ED-209's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Ooh, I'm particularly interested in the Blender tutorial! -
I agree that it looks like some sort of unmanned drone... But either way, I think I'm going to rip the middle section out and replace it with a more accurately detailed interior. The promo minifig of Hulk could! And yes, the interior is shown to have seats in the movie. Directly behind the cockpit doorway there's a computer console on the right wall; Coulson is shown using it sitting in a swivel-chair (also facing to the right of course.) Further back there is a series of inwards-facing bucket seats running along the left and right hand walls. I can't tell how many there are, but I think at least three per side. Along the walls behind the bucket seats is a cargo shelf, with a low railing at shoulder level to stop the cargo from sliding off. That's all I can remember!

Very nice! I prefer the banner without the ovoid myself. Have you tried outlining the antlers in a darker colour? Darker than the main antler colour I mean. -
Woah, it's really that dark?! It's practically indestinguishable from the background. Thank you for the image darkdragon. So does this look about right then?
-
I am a little disappointed by that, it looked like dark red in the photos I'd seen! Easy job to change the colours though, if I knew what colour it is. Can anyone give me the CMYK values of the boar's head? Or post a clearer photo/scan than Bricklink has? I've added a few new images in the original post. Torsos for the knight, a flag and a banner - hopefully they're the kind of thing you were looking for! They're designed to be used with the knight's legs (as opposed to other characters in the same army).
-
LOL, yes I noticed that too! Honest, I just forgot to mention it! Another point which I don't think has been mentioned yet, what's with the little flying robot thing that drops out the bottom of the Quinjet model? Not only is there nothing like that in the movie, I still don't even know what it's supposed to be!
-
I totally agree. While it's true that the closest the Avengers film comes to a "Captain America cycle" is Steve Rogers on a normal motorbike, I think the set could have included a bike based loosely on the WW2 era one from his own film. It could have been produced in dark green or olive, or more likely just in grey with a few add on plates or tiles in red and/or blue if they wanted something more "superhero-y". I don't like the modern bike body either, particularly in the context of Captain America - it reminds me too much of the horrendous Reb Brown telemovies from the '70s!
-
They all look fantastic! As cool as Treebeard is, I think my favourite has to be the Edoras set. Do you have any pics of the inner construction of the roof section?
-
Good ideas! I've added them to the origial post along with some others.

So I saw the Avengers when it opened last week, and it was great! (So then I saw it again, of course! ) I've already made a design for Nick Fury, based on the Lego poster art, and a reproduction of the promotional Hulk minifig (with some variants including Banner's civvies.) http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=68884&st=0#entry1264585 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=68510 But now I wanted to expand that a little and do some other designs of other characters and alternate outfits. S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (the logos go on her arms): The bodysuit Tony Stark wears under his armour: Tony's vintage Black Sabbath 1978 US tour t-shirt (those suckers cost hundreds of dollars these days!): And an alternate version for those with a sense of humour! Steve Rogers' civvies: And as a bonus, Tony's racing suit from Iron Man 2: Hope you like them, and I plan to do some more! If anyone has any suggestions for what they'd like to see, please let me know! EDIT: Raminator's suggestions! I can't find a decent screenshot of the male SHIELD uniform, but if memory serves their standard uniform was the same style as Hill's, so I did that. Again, the little logos go on the arms. Also added an image for a 2x2 tile, round or square, for anyone making any custom SHIELD vehicles or anything: Sabs t-shirt with visible arc reactor: And doing them made me realise that I'd used Tony's old reactor, which he replaced during Iron Man 2! Silly me, so here's the correct bodysuit for his appearence in the Avengers: Natasha Romanoff's civvies when she's not dressed up as Black Widow: Although I've done Bruce Banner's suit in the Hulk thread, I thought I'd add an image for when he's got his jacket off in the lab: Loki's dapper long suit and scarf combo for when he shows up in Stuttgart: And finally a fairly generic business suit for Pepper Potts, although not directly from The Avengers: If anyone else has any more suggestions or input it is most welcome! EDIT: has a differing opinion suggested one of the outfits Hawkeye wears early on in the film. I can't quite tell whether the t-shirt is black or just a really dark blue, so I hedged my bets! And although these are really from the Captain America movie, I thought I'd throw them in here rather than making a new thread. Cap's leather jacket over his USO outfit: And now that we have Lego bowler hats, Dum-Dum Dugan!

How is machine printing done?
ED-209 replied to nemesis4670's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Well the general industry standard for printing onto a 3D object like this is called "Pad printing". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pad_printing I don't know for certain that it's what Lego use in their factories, but I've always assumed so. It's a fairly involved process, but you can generally find specialist printing agencies who can do custom orders for you. They print corporate logos onto pens, stress-balls, that kind of thing. I looked into it about a year ago when I was doing designs for elves in the style of the official Collectable Minifig elf, but the only places local to me required huge set-up costs and huge print-runs, which turned me off it. I'm talking in the vicinity of hundreds of dollars for each screen (so that's per colour!) But if you can find a printer with decent rates and low runs, you'd have it set. Best of luck with it! -

I'm quite the comic book nerd myself, so I'm glad to share the design! LOL, thank you, I think! I'll have to work on that for you for next time! I've also just updated the original post to include a more movie-accurate look. I'm not wholly satisfied with it though, I feel the detail of the blue combat outfit looks nicer. Perhaps that's why TLG took that route for the poster? Who knows. But I'd be interested if anyone had any suggestions on how to make the black outfit "pop"? -
Thanks everyone, I'm glad you like 'em! I completely agree with you, and I played with the size and positioning of the insignia but I couldn't get it to sit right. If it's above the lind of his belly, it's either too small to make out the detail, or half of it is concealed behind the cloak. I hadn't tried to distort it, but maybe that would be a good compromise? I must admit I don't actually own the fig, as they're not out in Melbourne yet, but I looked at the leg piece on Bricklink to see what you were referring to. I'd be happy to do a torso design for armour to match the legs - is there any particular sort of shape or elements you'd like to see? And I'll see about making some flags and banners ASAP!

Oh wow, the shields look wonderful! You should do a flag/banner with the stag too! -
Oh wow, they look fantastic! The mechanic's hair is perfect for Egon! I would love to see custom faces for them too! What hair piece did you use on Ray?
-
I actually thought it was dark brown in the picture! Did you paint it black? If so, it still could be considered a purist custom, as that piece is available in black!

Pretty much just what the title says: a few decals to flesh out a faction based on the knight from the Collectable Minifigure. He seems like a nasty fellow, so I assume they're an evil faction! Official figure: Standard foot soldier or perhaps archer: Nobleman (with a bit of a belly - his own fault for picking a boar as his symbol I guess!): Shield for basic soldiers: Feedback most welcome, enjoy! EDIT: Flobnomdob requested some knight torsos that would work with the official legs, so I came up with these: Armoured: Tabbard, front and back: I've also made a couple of images for the standard 2x2 flag and the 3x7 for a hanging banner: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2335 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30292 EDIT: So I finally got a couple of the figures and I can certainly see what Wardancer, ZCerberus and Darkdragon were referring to. The colour of the boar's head is quite disappointing. So I decided to replace the ovoid shield rather than recolour the images I've made: Also, Andhe requested barding for the black knight's horse, which I thought was a marvellous idea! I used a template, I believe by Armothe. Here's what I came up with:
-
As Lego seem to be dragging their feet with an official figure of Nick Fury (I've heard they have no current plans to actually make him! ), I decided to take a shot at it. He appears in the background of the poster, and that's what I based the desin off. I had to take a fair bit of artistic license as most of the torso is covered by his arms and gun, and I tried to incorporate a bit of the old comic look to his belts/harness. So here's the end result - I've included two faces (with and without scars), front and back of torso, and legs. And I went with dark blue for the torso, with the expactation of sand blue arms and legs: Any feedback or suggestions are most welcome! EDIT: I've already seen the movie twice, I loved it! No spoilers, but Fury doesn't actually wear the outfit depicted in the Lego poster! I still like the combat ready look of my first attempt, but in the interest of movie accuracy I did another version of his more recognisable black outfit, both with a printed appearance of a trench coat and without (for anyone wanting to make a fabric coat.) Quite tricky to make it look interesting seeing as it's really just all black-on-black, but here it is:
-
They're excellent, I love them! You need to place an order with BrickForge to complete the figures! http://www.brickforge.com/store/home.php?cat=342 http://www.brickforge.com/store/home.php?cat=343 http://www.brickforge.com/store/home.php?cat=354

Robbing from the rich; the Forestmen return!
ED-209 replied to ED-209's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Thanks again everyone, I'm always glad when people like them! I'm afraid I'm guilty of being something of a daydreamer - I make far more designs than I apply! I haven't applied these (or the Wolfpack ones to be honest!), but I tend to use sticker sheets and a colour laser printer. I just wait until I've got a whole A4 sheet filled up, then print them. It doesn't look quite as good as a waterslide decal, but the results are quite reasonable and it's substantially easier. I'm alway's a fan of the joining of old and new too, that's probably why I do a lot of updated versions of Classic Castle factions! Hmm... I hadn't thought about doing pirate ones, I might have to look into that... -

I'm sorry to hear that, I've never used Inkscape before so I'm afraid I can't really help you there. That being said, I can say that it certainly works in Illustrator as I explained in the tutorial. Maybe someone who's familiar with Inkscape could write a tutorial about it? There might be a similar way to accomplish the same kind of result. -
I don't usually go in for purist customs, but that's very nicely done!
