Small Technic Challenge
Bzroom replied to Bzroom's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm not sure exactly how you mean, but yes, in my case, there is another 9m beam on the other end. -
Small Technic Challenge
Bzroom replied to Bzroom's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Your answer is a perfectly valid solution to the question asked. The only thing I fear is that the axle's hold strength is not as great as a pin, and the connection may come free more easily. -

I would use the red connections on both sides too, except I need the vertical friction-less pin shown. -

Bzroom replied to Bzroom's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here is mine. I needed the friction-less pin. Otherwise I would have used more of the red connectors. Also, needing another yellow beam on the other end made the use of the long red connections appropriate. I'm still interested in how everyone else would approach this problem. I made a mistake. In my real application, the yellow beam is two studs shorter, further complicating the solutions. -

I like it, this is very similar to my solution. Since there is nothing else retaining the yellow beam to the white, it seems best to have as many pin connections to it as possible. Edit: Actually, yours is much more concise than mine, and is usable in much more cases. :) -

I completely agree. And definitely tried this first. However this illustration should show you the very tight space constraint I am under. The blue 3 stud pins are occupied with other connections. -

Brilliant diff solution! The chassis looks like a very reusable scale. -
I like to do this with my coworkers. When I feel like I've solved an interesting problem, I like to challenge them to come up with solutions so I can compare mine to theirs. For me, this is one of the most challenging Technic beam connections, trying to rigidly connect these two beams in plane without adding lots of other thickness or size to the assembly. I'm curious how you guys would approach this problem. My specific implementation adds another white beam in plane, with one stud in between the other. Feel free to add other components as necessary to rigidly mount the two together, but try to keep the space as small as possible, so that this connection can be use in the most cases. I will post my solution after a few others have posted theirs. If you dont have LDD, I highly recommend it. http://ldd.lego.com/

So random. :) I think LEGO was one of my first hobbies, so i think LEGO influenced the others. Before LEGO I played with erector sets, "30in1" circuit boards, and mostly broke things. But after LEGO I built buggies and ran/programmed machinery. Now I program video games! Thanks mindstorms! 5 years of games programming later, when I look at a LEGO model, the wheels start turning much faster. I analyze it like a software project. I try to work in stages, making tests and choosing the best iterations. Not getting hung up on small details until the big picture is realized. I think they interact very much, and it is a pleasure to share that with other people who feel the same! *p.s. I've always wanted to put a robot in space and I can't wait to see your next moc. I raise you one randomness.

Need ideas for a gearbox.
Bzroom replied to darkboy101089's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I didn't mean to offend you. Of course Lego has given me a life long love for engineering, that is why we are all here. I just wanted to share my opinion and hopefully spark some new direction. To me the artistic side is equally important. Your work is art. It's mechanical art, and the super car piece tends to have a very large component dedicated to the transmission. Being a lover of engineering I ask myself, is this an efficient use of space and weight, cost and benefit? Since the transmission has little practical application; other than maybe a high/low gear, I would rather see mocs not stress about the transmission so much. I'm glad you are so pumped on engineering, me too. I've ridden a motorcycle for many years and built two hand rolled vehicles. Personally, i like an H pattern shifter. When you're coming in to a corner hard, you very often want to skip over gears. Also, without an indicator, sequential boxes require you to remember which gear you're in. With the H pattern, I can just feel it. I'm just very talkative tonight. Take care! -

Super cars are boring to me in general, including sequential transmissions, they aren't new. But to say that this is as small as it gets is probably not true since all these designs use practically the same method. Unless I have missed something, they don't seem all that inovative over the original. I think when someone really turns the problem on its head, they will come up with a New, much more compact design. Similar to the way this design has been proven and beaten. To me, I just don't see the point in having a car that's all transmission. Seems like you should just make a transmission model in that case. Never the less, good work. :) -
Videos of Lego Technic CRASHES
Bzroom replied to DLuders's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The humanity! I won't even let my LEGO models rest on their own weight. I put them on little stands when I'm not working on them. These kids crashing their LEGO should just give them to me. :) In the trial truck video, you can see just how poorly these models are assembled. I'd think that a studless model would stay together better than that. -
I want another Unimog and grand prix for the hubs, pneumatics, orange panels, white/black/red beams. <- useless information. :) You can buy a Unimog and get the grand prix for 50% off. Or any other combination of lesser value. I just bought tons of sets with their last sale. I'm not sure if i can justify another 300 dollars right now. But i do need lots of these parts for a current moc. I was planning to use BrickLink or LEGO customer service, but buying these large sets at essentially 25% off may be a better deal. Do you guys think 25% off is enough to justify purchasing extra sets?

Need ideas for a gearbox.
Bzroom replied to darkboy101089's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It always seems strange to me when the gearbox takes up a third of the vehicle. In my opinion, until the gear boxes are made smaller, their space and complexity outweighs the benefit added to the model. -
Nope, didnt help.. my wallet. :) Parts i'm excited about: Truck wheels Mini turn tables Mini yellow rims and scoops Dirtbike tires Mini tracks Rotor blades Tons of parts.. And a log for my tree harvester to eat. Thanks for the tip! I was telling every one I saw in the store. Boys and girls, I was like: "Hey go tell your mom these are 20% off." lol. she's like "what.. you dont even like lego. hunny you didnt say anything about wanting lego." I'm like check this one out, remote control truck!.. I'm a bad influence. I wish I hadn't already had the mog, the 4x4, and the racer or I would have grabbed those too.

Heavy Machinery Collection
Bzroom replied to sapo117's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I can't keep it a secret anymore. This is my current Technic project. I hoped not to unveil it before it was finished. But, I can't resist! Walking Tree Harvester: I was trying to achieve a unique counter balance system with the arm. There are 3 motors hanging off the back end of the LAs. It contains: 2 XL - Walking 3 M - Arm lifting 1 M - Compressor / Gripper valve 1 M - Turret Rotation 1 M - Gripper feed wheels. It nearly maxes out that little controller :) Improvements I plan to make: * More functional gripper, stronger grip, multiple clamps to gather multiple trees, better feed mechanism. * Better styling on the arm, battery cover * Reinforcements to the LA's gear box * An operator cab on the main chassis * Better color scheme * Bonus, in the front section is supposed to be a winch that will lower down a small forest buggy for the operators to travel to and from the work site -
8110 Unimog building time?
Bzroom replied to bekesizoltan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I agree. I save my sets until a later day if I'm going to be rushed. The Unimog was my first set coming out of the dark ages. I must have taken 200 pictures of the chassis. I was blown away by the new Technic style. I starting building it during New Years Eve with my girlfriend. I built the chassis the first night. The cab the next day. And on the third day I found just enough time to build the crane. I love that set, but my only complaint is the weak gripper. Also, the pins that are intended to be pulled to lift the cab and remove the crane/winch are difficult to reach. So I guess that's two. :) This is the last weekend I have to work for a while. I can't wait to get back to building Technic! Edit: Fun facts: I bought the Unimog to try to bring me and my girlfriend closer together. We broke up and i went into another mini-dark-ages for another year. My new girlfriend liked LEGO, so i spent thousands of dollars on new sets. The 42000, 3 excavators, the super car, rc 4x4, millennium falcon, tons of creator, etc. My new girlfriend is now jealous of the time I try to spend with LEGO, but she's so sweet she'll still tidy up my LEGO room and stack my organizers. :) LEGO really is more fun to enjoy with other people. That's why I like this forum! I like to have lots of creator sets laying around so that when my friends come over they can build, even if they dont like to MOC, they can just follow the instructions. -
Mgx4 Crawler
Bzroom replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If you use rocker arms, or push rod suspension, you can adjust the ratio and easily overcome the strength of those springs and attain a lot more travel. If you decrease the strength by half, you will double the travel, which is perfect for rock crawling. Create a right angle rocker arm where the top of the spring attaches now. Use a push rod instead of where the spring is now. Attach the spring at an adjustable (and probably much lower) lever arm length than the push rod. Voila, ridiculous travel.
