1. Yes! That's exactly how to spell it. I think you're the first person to get it right. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
2. Probably has to do with brickfilm being a registered trademark.
3. I picked up a Propeller Power this week because the LEGO store didn't have the other sets I wanted in stock, and because after meeting the guy who designed the set at Brickworld I was interested in checking it out. Anyway after builgin the main model and the helicopter I decided to see what i could come up with. I made this collection of 6 creations, which I found very telling about my creations in general. About 2/3 creatures, 1/6 spaceships and 1/6 buildings . I think I might try to do another alternate build where I force myself to use the wheels as wheels just to broaden my horizons a little bit. The poodle was actually one of things I did last, so I was amazed I got something so cool out of so few pieces All pics on flickr I know some people are opposed to alternate models, but I think they are fun exercises and I often discover techniques I would never have thought of otherwise. Hope you like them!
4. Here is my personal list of 10 "must-see" brickfilms. This not necessarily my top 10 favorite ones, (although they are all favorites of mine) but they are 10 that I think anyone interested in brickfilms should see. I tried to include as many different types of video as possible. White Stripes - Fell in Love with a Girl - Whenever I tell people I make movies with lego, they invariably ask me if I have seen this. Robota - Considered by many to be the best brickfilm The Magic Portal - Considered by many to be the earliest brickfilm Little Guys - everything by David Pagano is amazing, but this is still my favorite Hypothetical Possibilities - My favorite of the many "buddy" type films 30 Years: The Story of the Lego Minifig - A great montage Play Nice - I like this one because it is about playing with lego Ohne Title 5 - A unique technique/approach The Franky Job - I know it's kind of narcissistic to include one of my own films, but it has been called "the weirdest brickfilm ever" so I thought it should be included. America Outlawed - This film is an amazing accomplishment, so even though the audio on the first part has been taken down I felt it should be included. Hope you like these and please share your own must-see lists! Edit: Embed'D!
5. I went to my local LEGO store and used their order-in-store service to put in an order for a bunch of sets. I get free shipping, a golden keychain and stamps on my loyalty card! I didn't know this service existed until yesterday, but it was super easy and awesome. Here's a tutorial on removing the keychain parts. Even if you can't get the screw out, certain helmets/hats can still fit on top to cover it up.
6. I realize now that "waste" was probably not the best word choice on my part - my comment came out more negative than I intended. I'm all for recreating (this is a LEGO site after all!), many of the tutorials I posted links to are far from perfect and could certainly benefit from restructuring. I just think it's important that there is an awareness of what's already out there so we are improving/adding to the knowledge base instead of replicating it. There are a lot of tutorials out there already, and while I look forward to seeing what new content gets produced here (and to producing it) I don't want to see the same glut of redundant brickfilming tutorials that plagues YouTube (sometimes I think there are more of them than actual finished movies) . I agree that every site offers a unique perspective, and I'm glad that this forum has launched, I just want to make sure it's really gives a EB take on brickfilming.
7. To elaborate, Bricks in Motion is a large, active community of brick animators. They have a directory of finished films that have been submitted by members and approved by their review panel (this is primarily to ensure it doesn't get flooded with walk cycles, test and other unfinished films). The resources section of the website is still under development, but the Technique and Software & Hardware forums are the best places to get answers to any questions you may have about stop-animation with bricks. If you animate with bricks and haven't joined Bricks in Motion yet, do it now. That said there is another community entirely devoted to this hobby, the one that named it - Brickfilms.com. BiM was actually created after a large part of the community split off from Brickfilms after some internet drama . And though the site has been mostly abandoned by the community, it still has a lot of good Resources and Tutorials. They also have a forum about Animation and Effects. I know there are some other websites/communities out there, but these are the two I'm familiar with. If you know of more, please add them! YouTube is flooded with animating tutorials. I'd recommend the ones by Nathan Wells. All that being said, my personal advice is not to worry too much about getting the technique perfect on your first films. As soon as you have the bare requirements (bricks, a camera, and an idea), go ahead and make a (short) movie! You'll learn more about animating from doing/trying/failing than you will from reading/watching/thinking. Not to say those aspects aren't important, (I wouldn't have spent all the time putting together those links if they weren't ) but in my experience, nothing teaches like experience. Well yeah, everything is better on EB, but let's not waste time recreating what already exists.
8. You can't use your arms in soccer!
9. These are some of the models I built for the main story in my latest animation. I debuted these in my display at Brickworld a couple weeks back (it's already so far in the past! ). I finally got around to taking nice pictures and uploading them. Be sure to check out all the pics on flickr. Let me know what you think
10. Yeah, I saw that this was on BB last night and freaked out. I've been trying to get something on there for a while now. I think I might have actually screamed "YES!!!" It's all very fuzzy in retrospect. Thanks. I know! We'll always have Par... the Internet.
11. I was thinking it was more of a fishy lagoon monster, but yeah I see how it could be a plant monster too.
12. I was lucky enough to be one of the 30 people selected to participate in the Combo Build at Brickworld. We were given all given three exo-force sets (8113, 8114, & 8115)and given about two hours to combine the pieces and build something new from the pieces. I built these two monsters in love. More on flickr My entry ended up winning and I got the Republic Attack Shuttle as a prize (also we got to keep hte exo-force sets)! Thoughts and feedback welcome.
13. I went on vacation for a week following Brickworld, so I am only now getting back home and unpacking (physically and mentally) from Brickworld. I just posted my day by day coverage on my blog, but for those of you who don't want to read through all of that here are my highlights: - Winning the Combo Build and Dirty Buildster! - Shaking hands with Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and having him spend a little time looking at my display - Talking with John-Henry Harris (LEGO set designer) and Asli Bilgin (the woman behind WomenBuild) - Hanging out with lots of other lego fans (both AFOL and TFOL varieties), seeing people from last year again and making new friends - Showing other FOLs the cool details in my MOCs and having them show me theirs - Talking to the public about my animations and creations - All the great panels/discussions - World of Lights I agree that these were vast improvements from last year. Not having to sit through the endless reading of raffle numbers was greatly appreciated. I also got really lucky with the in-store event and didn't have to wait in line at all, but I think they they should probably tweak it a little bit for next year. If they had a sign-up sheet like they did for the pick-a-brick or if they did the raffle ahead of time at the hotel and had time slots attached to the different colors that would prevent people from having to stand in line for so long. That time is better spent hanging out and looking at MOCs. But yeah this was an amazing 4 days and I can't wait for next year! I'm already planning out my display.
14. After years of planning, writing, building, recording, editing etc. I finally premiered the first installment of "The Nightly News at Nine" at Brickworld last week. I will be following it up with a new video every month. Please check it out.
15. Nope. And the Republic attack shuttle, while well suited for invasions and wars, does not work well for going to the beach. Ironically I took this picture before the last sigfig- me- was added. As for whether they just stayed in a big mob or if they ever invaded other areas I can't say. I only saw them in the mob, but I didn't spend as much time at that display as I wanted. I kept getting distracted by shiny things.
16. flickr Now I have to catch a train!
17. Pictures of the real thing! Go to flickr to see the full size pics. I'll be posting beauty shots of some of these as regular MOCs in a week or so. Right now I need to get back to Brickworld!
18. Awesome, I'm looking forward to the seeing it. I'm sure it will be awesome, after all, you two have a title to defend.
19. I've been working like crazy to prepare my stuff for BrickWorld. I can't believe it's only a few days away! Anyway, I thought I'd blatantly steal borrow Hinckley's idea and put a little teaser for my display up here. What could it mean? I'm not telling.
20. Don't forget David Pagano
21. I made these two! A while back they were winners in a pirate smiley contest.
22. Wow! This is amazing! I was already excited for Brickworld, but this just takes it to a whole new level. Now I'm all nervous about my MOCs/animations and whether they will be worthy of a glance from the CEO. I know I already said it but, wow! I'd be jumping up and down if I weren't at work.
23. Please, feel free. As has been pointed out, the design for the smaller owl was mostly borrowed from TLG anyway. I'm not especially protective of my designs - doesn't make sense to me when anyone could have easily discovered it independently. Do you often sell your MOC designs or was that purely theoretical. LOL That's crazy awesome! The song is very catchy.
24. I made a couple brick built owls a week or two ago. I only now got around to photographing them. I blatantly stole the head design for the grey owl from the Michigan Avenue Lego store.
25. I'm very excited about the marketplace set. A black ninja wrap and turban! It's been a long time since these pieces were last available (aside from the white ninja wrap on Dengar a couple years back). The venice chase set also looks great. Fezs! And that awesome new female hairpiece. Hooray!
