Lego technic challenge 2012
drdesignz replied to Ondra's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I went to view the gallery and half of the images are not showing for me. Am I the only one with this problem? It's sounds like you may have signed up within five days of the server migration. Unfortunately, they had a problem and had to use a backup, so five days worth of posts were lost. You could have probably signed up again using the original username. -
I just got in from Target. They had Malevolence at 20% off, so I had to get it.

Well, I lost all of the calculation fixes and updates. I'll redo the work again shortly... -

I wasn't aware of a term for this type of configuration. It looks like it works well. Hope to see clearer pictures at some point. -

I wouldn't worry about it. You can't please everybody; there will always be negative reactions no matter what you do. It's like politics. No matter what you believe in, or how strongly you believe in it, there will always be another person who believes the exact opposite. Personally, although the competition is not exactly what I had hoped it would be, I'm still excited to participate and appreciate the unique opportunity. -
Cost and Size of a Lego Minifigure Scale Earth

That info is here: http://www.movoto.com/blog/novelty-real-estate/build-your-house-out-of-legos/ Here is some detailed information for Lego geometry: http://www.robertcailliau.eu/Lego/Dimensions/zMeasurements-en.xhtml The bottom line is, it's impossible to come up with an exact quantity of Lego bricks for such a concept. Although, you could somewhat accurately calculate the number of bricks required for a large hollow sphere, if all bricks were the same size. A solid sphere would also be possible, I suppose. Either way the numbers are astronomical. -
-------------- Trade Made -------------- I have two extra Star Wars Chrome TC-14 minifigs, new in sealed polybags. I would like to trade them for other Star Wars minifigs, also new in sealed polybags. I already have the shirtless Darth Maul. I'm looking for the Chrome Stormtrooper, Shadow ARF Trooper, White Boba Fett, and Chrome Black Darth Vader promotional polybags. I can do: One Chrome TC-14 for one Chrome Stormtrooper One Chrome TC-14 for one Shadow ARF Trooper One Chrome TC-14 plus $10 USD for one White Boba Fett One Chrome TC-14 plus $20 USD for one Chrome Black Darth Vader Two Chrome TC-14's for one Chrome Black Darth Vader

Cost and Size of a Lego Minifigure Scale Earth

Thanks for checking the math. I'll check it again later and update the original post. That number came from the online calculator I linked to. It's simply a rough estimate. And it's not a flat surface, it's actual shape and structure. The calculator estimate considers the equivalent of bricks to build a one storey house, one square mile large. It seems like 5 billion would be a flat square mile surface, correct? Clearly the whole idea is preposterous! That's the point, it's just a fun idea to think about. But I would like the math to be as accurate as possible. Thanks for the feedback and additional information. -
Cost and Size of a Lego Minifigure Scale Earth

It did not take very long, especially with online resources. I might do some graphics at some point later, too. Here is the Death Star article, for anybody interested. -
A Lego minifigure is 1.5 inches tall. Let's say the average human height is 5'-6". That means, considering height only, not size, a Lego minifig is 1:44 scale. The mean radius of earth 6,371 km, or about 3,959 miles, so that's a diameter of about 7,918 miles with a surface area of about 196,939,900 square miles. That means a minifig scale earth at a scale of 1:44 would be about 180 miles wide, which is roughly the driving distancebetween New York City and Baltimore. The surface area is (4)pi90^2, which equals about 101,788 square miles. That's about the size of the state of Colorado. According to this calculator, it would take approximately 142 billion Lego bricks to cover a square mile, at a cost of 14.1 billion dollars (USD). So, for an entire Lego minifig scale earth, completely hollow, that would be about 14,453,896,000,000,000 Lego bricks. That's nearly 14.5 quadrillion. Which, at the current rate of production of about 19 billion Lego elements per year, would take about a million years to produce. It is also about 30,000 times the total number of bricks produced since the company was started. 14.5 quadrillion Lego bricks has an approximate retail value of nearly 1.5 quadrillion dollars. That's roughly 700 times the USD monetary base, or over 20 times the entire world's GDP.

Whaaat? Two dollars?!?!? That's crazy! It'll sell for nearly $100 on eBay right now. Heck, there's an auction right now just for an empty box, and it's going for about $20 (with shipping) with another day and a half left. I've gotten some good deals. But never that good

That's clever mechanical engineering. I think it could be useful for a forklift design too. -

Lego technic challenge 2012
drdesignz replied to Ondra's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Oh, no, sorry. I mean the the stock chassis design, it has two yellow technic beams on the top rear: They are used for the body connection, so that the body can be tilted off the chassis for access to the battery box. I think those two beams are not easily removable, so that would be something to consider when designing a new body. It seems like they would have to be reused, so that the new body connects in a similar manner as the original design. -

Those two yellow beams connected to the chassis for the body connection are not easily removable, are they? I think that might be a design issue to consider. -

I think I read everything, but it's still not 100% clear to me whether or not multiple entries is allowed. Did I miss something? I do see "[your] design" several times. However, when I go to the submit page, there is a "My Creations" page, which does clearly suggest more than one entry will be accepted. Does the video clarify that? I can't view it. -

I assume as long as the battery box is easily accessable then the entire body wouldn't necessarily need to be removable. But I'm sure that will be specified in the rules when that gets released. -

Haha, that is a joke... right? I thought about using Photoshop to change the color of my design. That would be fairly easy, and if done correctly, will look realistic. Quick example of color changing: -

Too bad the chassis isn't all black and/or gray. Being mostly red will clash with certain color schemes for the body. I hope multiple entries will be allowed. Do I understand correctly that voting will begin as soon as models are uploaded? So if I submit a design during the first week of October, I'll have three month's worth of voting potential? Whereas if I were to submit a design during the final week of December, I only have a few days of voting? -

So it really is just a body for an existing model? That seems like an odd thing. Has that every been done before? Not the competition, I mean, a set as an option or add-on for a previously released model? If they really want something like that, I think an attachment for the Unimog would be a much better competition. There are a million creative possibilities. I was really hoping to have an all new crawler design using the latest power functions. I really like Lego's crawler, but it's more of a generic offroad type of 4x4 pickup truck. Crawler, referring to a rock crawler, is not the correct term, the way I see it. Oh well... if it's true, I'll still participate. A couple months is plenty of time to come up with something. I wonder if multiple entries will be accepted..?
