By using the 4-wide diff you can actually make a similar gearbox using only two axles (input and output). It is longer and the diff makes it look kinda dumb but it narrower and symmetrical. Man, i wish lego would make those dark gray gears in diffrent sizes, would make gearboxes less of an hassle and more realistic too.

Ha! I just had the same idea a moment ago, though yours is much more simple than what i had in mind. My previous autoclutch was unneccesarily complex. This is just beautifully simple!

Little late for the party but... I think i understand what you are looking for. I made a simple "proof of concept" video about my completely motorized(one motor) solution. I has one big flaw: the motor needs to do a small backwards correction to disengage the diving ring and it can be quite hard if it isn't geared down A LOT. Basically it's an automatic clutch. Output is the darkgray gear in the middle.

Hello to everyone on EB! I finally made the decision to join the absolutely smashing community of Eurobricks. This is my introduction. I am a 17-year-old guy from the oh so northern Finland. I've been building with lego all my life since my older brother had quite a collection all ready. Nowdays i build mainly technic since i'm so keen on mechanical and functional things but sometimes i do small system builds too. My other interest aside fom lego include playing various musical instruments like sax and piano. I'm terrible but it's for my own amusement. I also play computergames, Minecraft and Portal 2 being personal favourites(msg me if you want to play with me!). I wish to be an active part of this community and hopefully the feedback helps me to actually finsih some builds as they have a habit to be left unfinished...
