  1. I am thinking about building something in this color combo as well, but dark tan pieces are really hard to gather! I really like the effect you achieved with those 2x2 dark tan tiles and I look forward to some interior shots, well done!
  2. Thanks Whitefang for this thorough review! I can't stop dreaming of armies of zombies and cheerleaders (dreaming only)...but they are all sold out in Hong Kong and I am still waiting for my box to arrive!
  3. I really like the bumper cars as well, will you be building more motorized amusement rides? Great job!
  4. This is a fig that I definitely can't miss! If only can I get dozens of them...
  5. Thanks Erdbeereis and L@go for the compliments and thanks Svelte for explaining the pillar technique! Here's an really old photo of the technique used in the pillar (sorry about the poor quality), hope it can help: To increase strength, I think it would be better if more 1x1 bricks with studs on 4 side instead of only 2 for everything 4 bricks are used in the central 1x1 pillar.
  6. Thanks guys for all your compliments and suggestions(Sorry for not replying to you all individually, but I did read each of the replies and I was very happy reading them. Thanks for blogging me MetroiD!),they give me all the motivation I need for any future creation! Oh...that balcony is definitely going away ! Re: Svelte - That pink torso is indeed a Birkin ! I agree that the color of the hoses doesn't really look good, I think I need something really dark to tone down the building and the old dark grey is not doing the job, but that's the only color I have. Re: WhiteFang - Burberry is a brand that I really like and I actually thought of it as a follow up to Gucci, but I had to give it up at this moment as the color scheme would be tan(an overused-yet-expensive color in many AFOL modular creations), dark tan(I do have some pieces from the Fire Brigade but that's not much), dark grey(completely used up) and black, and its shop interior and merchandise would be too similar to the Gucci store . I do hope I can make one some day!
  7. Seeing the success of Tommy and Gucci, Hermes joins my high fashion modular street today to make sure every hard-earned penny of my minifigs are well spent. I wish I could do this equestrian statue better... As in an actual store, we also sell saddle here! Ground floor is for bags. While the upper floor is for clothes, to differentiate Hermes from Gucci, it also offers top hat and scarves instead of fragrances. I planned to sell fine porcelain cups and dishes as well, but they didn't make it here. The Hermes building is actually an upgraded version of my old MOC, Tudor Toys, back in 2008: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?...aded&start= She utilises the exact sand blue elements I had back then, i.e. 1x2 brick, 1x2 45 degree slope, and 1x4 tiles, and the slope-built-turret technique is carried over and becomes a slope built pillar. I am actually quite dissatisfied with the balcony over the main shop window, maybe I will take it down some day. For those who are interested, here are 2 of the links that I used as reference materials: http://hauteworld.blogspot.com/2009/08/her...ris-france.html http://maitaispicturebook.blogspot.com/200...hermes-fsh.html I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures as much as I enjoyed building it. I know it is not as good as my previous building so I hope you guys can give me some feedback, thank you !
  8. Thanks for the very detailed and entertaining review Svelte! I really enjoyed reading it. As a big fan of modular buildings, I am definitely buying this, but I think that GE (so as FB) has significantly less exterior details when compared to CC and GG. While I appreciate LEGO's recent approach to fully furnish every floor of the modular buildings, I think that shouldn't be done at the expense of details on the facade. It appears to me that LEGO wants to do both interior and exterior, but they can't afford to make both of them as good as this series deserves given the budget constraints (Frankly, we have a lot of great stuff inside GE, but the interior just seem unfinished and I think Jamie can definitely make a better facade if he doesn't have to save for the interior). I think if they can't manage to do both, focus and priority should be given to the exterior, which is fundamental to the series.
  9. Awesome layout! The buildings, the vehicles are all wonderful and very detailed. I really look forward to seeing the expansion of this vivid and lively layout!
  10. Hi Thrawnseg, in addition to what have been said by fellow members, which I agree, I think you need to think about the following questions: 1) Do you want modern skyscrapers or classic buildings to be the backbone of your layout? Apart from the non-compatible-color-tone issue, the buildings from the regular city/creator line are so modern in architectural style that they can't really mix with the classic modular buildings. The scale is just not right, if the classic modular buildings are to be of their current size, the modern city line buildings should be a lot bigger to build a realistic layout. In my opinion, if you love skyscrapers, go for the city line and don't mix them with the modulars or you would drawf them and make them look silly. 2) Do you play with your sets often or do you simply sit back and admire them? City sets are more about playability while the modulars are more about display value. If you want to play with your sets like a kid, go for City. If you want a dollhouse, a diorama, go for the modulars. 3) Do you build MOCs? The modular buildings are actually of very great value as parts pack. Compare to the city line, modular sets offer lots of special colored parts and special elements at a comparatively cheap price (They are expensive, but they are all comparatively cheap when you consider the components that they offer). In addition, the modulars offer a lot of interesting techniques and ideas that would help and inspire your doing MOCs. If you only build with the building instructions, you can easily fill up a large layout considering the massive number of new city and creator sets coming out each year. Conversely, as LEGO releases one Modular Building per year, you need to do your MOC if you want a decent looking street in a short period of time. I myself is a big fan of modular buildings and as an adult fan, I am not really into playing with my sets. I have a little setup of all the official modular buildings and a few MOCs of my own. I use what the City line offers to supplement my Modular Street (mostly the minifigs as I find the 6 wide vehicles too big even when they placed next to the Modulars) and I am definitely getting the limo that will come out later this year. I admire my street all the time and my non-LEGO building visitors are all fascinated by it. I loved MOC as a kid (something off topic...it was the 90s, and my cousins, my grandma and I built a few huge houses on 48x48 baseplate. My grandma invented the ancient modular building system by stacking baseplates on top of each floor and build on them, and I kept telling her it was "illegal". Now looking back, how genius was she!), but the Modular Buildings make me love MOC even more!
  11. I have never heard of this joke and the last need is really a nice surprise Nice to read and to look at!
  12. I wish I have a huge enough collection to sell, but I believe Gucci would put me in jail if I do so ! Thanks sens1992, I wish I can make a better one next time!
  13. My friend once has a mini mario toy kart. Yours looks really cute and just like that real thing!
  14. MetroiD: I just checked Classic Town, thanks for your kind words and blogging me! I must declare though that I own only 1 pair of Gucci glasses and surprisingly, I have never been in any Gucci store in real life . WhiteFang and prateek: I am glad that you guys like it. I have always wanted to do something in dark green and I have started collecting dark green pieces way before I started building Tommy(and I once thought about building Tommy in dark green, but I was sure that I don't have enough pieces for that and the colors don't really match the store, so I went for reddish brown). I told myself not to build any fashion/ brand related house after Tommy was completed as the buildings would be too similar. I originally planned for a very fancy restaurant/ bar, but the use of dark green and dark red couldn't help reminding me of the classic strips on the Gucci handbags. Luckily the two buildings turn out to be very different. lightningtiger and Mr Hobbles: Thanks! I bet Jamie B. and LEGO must have thought about this but they can't as I used so many so called illegal techniques, fortunately I am not a LEGO set designer ! Those clothes are "willing" donated by 3 poor minifigs (not custom made) and I think the perfume bottles are from the Belville line, I got them from a local brick dealer. lisqr and dr_spock: I designed the heart more than 2 years ago but I never get the chance to use it, it's also one of my favorite parts of the building I include "TM" just to make sure everyone knows its a trademark (though I think no one doesn't know about that). In fact, I work in one of the most boring professions in the world...Accounting. BlueBard: Although the construction took me 2 months and almost half of the time was spent waiting for parts, I actually revised the building a zillion times to get the Gucci sign and the shop window right. marcosbessa: Thank you! The color scheme is the same as the town hall in 10184 Town Plan, which I really like, and oh, I love your dark blue cinema! Rocketbilly: Try it yourself! You never know what you are capable to build with the parts you have unless you try it. Limited resources actually pushes you to think of more innovative use of parts . And yes, he's holding an iPod! ILikePi: Nothing is planned at the moment as I have literally used up everything at my disposal. I now have to start collecting bricks all over again, which is quite difficult as many sets that contain special colored bricks are being discontinued altogether (e.g. 10182, 10190 and the VW Beetle, yes, I wanted to do a dark blue building but now I can't ). Big Cam, Rick, Freddie, Jonas and Jasper Joppe Geers: Thank you! Dark green has always have a very important place in my heart and I am happy that I blended it successfully with light grey. I was really afraid that the light grey built stone frame would make the building look too dull, so I added a lot of architectural details to the pillars, arch and the front side of the roof. Luckily everything goes very well together. I wish I can do better next time ! Zorbas: You remind me of that! I should use only classic smilies next time! on!
  15. Hello all, this is my first post in 2010, and I had a really long LEGO hiatus indeed, my last MOC was completed in Mar 2009! This Gucci™ store is actually a follow up model to the Tommy Hilfiger™ Store and features a fully furnished interior that is decorated with reference to the actual Gucci™ Flagship store in New York. http://www.gucci.com/us/us-english/gucci-n.../store-concept/ But those are 2008 material, so the time in my store must have paused during the last decade... My 2-storey-store features a fully functional revolving door and a balcony, and offers an extensive range of products including bags, men and women's wear, and fragrances. Ground Floor: First Floor: I originally intended to sell ladies clothes of the Indiana Jones girls and Dolores Umbridge (from Harry Potter), but these figs are so insanely expensive that I would rather get clothes for myself. Oh, we have a sky window! Before we wrap up, here's a shot of the Gucci™ store sitting next to Tommy Hilfiger™ Store: Can anyone guess what is the thing that the middle guy is holding? It's a iPod Classic...Doesn't really resemble the real thing, does it? Thanks for reading, looking forward to you comments and criticism!
  16. I am sorry if I offended you, but I did not intend to use the term "MOCish" as an insult as I myself is an MOCer, if you are interested, you may check my latest MOC here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?...c=27054&hl= I appreciate the great MOCs and the special building techniques created by the AFOL community and like I said, I really love the water tower, the bell, the "1932", which appeared in MOCs by others before. I think that the set is good, but it lacks something to make it jump out from the other MOCs/ CC style sets.
  17. As a super fan of the modular building series, I have been waiting for this new release for ages. Thanks for the news and the pics ! I am kinda disappointed by the reduced level of details and how blank it looks though. The set lacks the "wow" factor as the techniques applied are not as fresh and original as they were in CC and GG, I really love the water tower, the bell, the "1932", but I have already seen them before in MOCs by others (and the bell is recycled from Jamie's Town Hall). The first/ second floor interior is quite a letdown as it looks really amateur when compared to GG's, everything looks so "MOCish" that I think I can build better. I admit that we can't really expect every set to come with tons of new techniques though. From the way it looks, I believe we can add additional middle floor(s) as in CC and GG, I wonder how that will reduce the complaints with the proportion of the building. Kinjai, I can't agree more with you, but I will definitely grab a few copies of this baby .
  18. Great choice of theme! The tentacles, the building absorbed in black, the chaos...I really love how you render the infestation As usual, your buildings are really great and I can see great attention to details. You really have a gift Aliencat! Simply awesome!

    MOC: Hot Dogs

Your hot dog stand looks very realistic and the details are very lovely! The vignette is very hilarious, too! Great job!
  20. Great review! I really enjoyed reading your review, it's very detailed and has covered every thing that I want to know about the set. Great bus, great windows, now I can't wait to get it! P.S. I particularly love the line "Obviously no one in Lego City has hep B since everyone at the same table is forced to share a glass", .
  21. I think the styles don't match for reasons mentioned by Ricecracker and Section8. My loyalty lies with the modular sets, but I am gonna get the city corner (for the bus) and vehicle sets as supplement.
  22. Everything is so well done here! The details on the building are lovely but I love the curve of the corner even more, the build is just so ingenious! Tan is a rather tricky color to me as it can easily make things look boring, you make very good use of it and the building looks very attractive .
  23. Yes, I mean physical shops, but they don't always have the parts you want though.
  24. Thanks djo for your kind words ! The planning for "Tommy", excluding the first floor furniture which was built before it, started in late January. We have numerous shops in HK that dedicate to selling parts. Besides the tiles, reddish brown bricks and plates, I collect parts from them on an ongoing and almost random basis. This "Parts-first-design-later" strategy doesn't give me a lot of bricks but is surely very effective design wise, as I can find some creative use of pieces when I am forced to make good use of them. As limitations make me think more and give better results, I set myself a 25 2x2 windows limit this time(and I used only 24). The extra thinking surely paid off, imagine how the building would look like if the rectangular block for the clock and the 2 2x2 windows is replaced with a fourth "generic" window. Playing with the parts in hand is better than doing it with the computer for me. As usual, I started by designing the windows but not a master plan. I had a few window prototypes, the Tommy logo and the canopy over the shop entrance done in February. That was when I started to think about the overall picture, but I got stuck there, partly because of work and partly because of a lack of ideas. I had some good windows but I didn't know how to arrange them properly for a decent facde. The breakthrough came two weeks before completion and things just flowed naturally from that point. The facade was completed in one day and the shop interior was rather a piece of cake. I exhausted my parts and ideas but it also means new parts gathering and parts-driven building experimentations, which will surely help my future projects. I am not sure if you have the chance to buy parts freely, but I hope you may find my "Parts-first-design-later" strategy useful .
  25. Thanks for your kind words Teddy and I Scream Clone, I hope I can do better next time. Now I need to go back and collect both thoughts and bricks. Thanks VBBN, we don't have Aeropostale` store in Hong Kong so I don't know how messy it could be, but I am sure the Tommy logo is the easiest to replicate in LEGO form. Thanks Er!k, I think I used the 2 colors fairly in the shop, they are on the logo, the shop wall's dark red strip and the dark blue carpet. I think they are not even that dominant in an actual store .
