These rankings don't really mean much. What surprised me is the domination of older Technic sets in the ranking (the 2nd list). If you look at Lego's revenue (https://www.visualcapitalist.com/visualizing-legos-revenue-growth-2003-2023/) then it is somewhat counter intuitive that older sets are still more popular. May be ratings were made by particular generation of people (like us?) who were very active with Lego Technic in older years and now moved on with life with something else and new generation did not find similar craze in Technic sets. I feel best days of Technic are beyond us. Modern Technic sets are too complex and expensive. Building them feels more of a chore than fun (of course, my personal opinion). I am now more interested City theme or modular buildings, which are more liked by my children too. I think smaller Technic sets are still loved by kids but Lego is focusing too much on adult collectors on their latest flagship Technic sets. The Porsche was great after a long time. Then the Land Rover had too many functions which didn't work well. Then from G500 it removed most of the gearbox! All the supercars are now super complicated and not much playability. BTW, I don't own 8455 but do own 8069, same functionality without pneumatics.

Awesome. Better than original Unimog set Is it built using G500 parts solely and nothing from any other set?

2025 Technic Sets Discussion

A front wheel drive car, with transverse engine and proper gearbox, will be nice. Lego never made any FWD car even though majority of real life cars are FWD. -

So are you imply G500 is better because it has no gearbox at all compared to Landrover which had a poorly designed gearbox? I still can't find any video of the transmission in YouTube so can't understand how the whole transmission thing works. Is it correct that engine is linked with wheels via differentials and simply forward/reverse selector and nothing else - I mean only speed reduction is high & low gears? So G500 has 2-speed gearbox while Landrover had 4x2 speeds? Yes, I do accept Landrover gearbox was not the best -

So LandRover had fewer pieces, cost less and yet had more functions (at least a true gearbox-transmission) than G500. Is this progress? McLaren had a true gearbox but costs nearly £400 -

So how it is different from the Land Rover? There is no gearbox in G500?? -

How it will different from similar Land Rover set? -

Hmm, I checked the steps, there is still cracking on gears 3 and 4. Even Sariel's YouTube video confirms this. -

It was mind bogglingly complex to figure out how the transmission works. I followed the steps mechanically while building. But now after observing the chassis, I think I have figured it out. Engine revolution is transferred via passenger side red shaft to 4-speed gearbox at the back of the chassis. After speed reduction, it transfers [from rear] via passenger side grey shaft to front and then goes to DNR/Hi-Lo clutches. From there it transfers to center differential and then to front and rear differentials and finally to wheels. So the path is: engine -> [red shaft] -> rear gearbox -> [grey shaft] -> middle gearbox -> differentials -> wheels Have I got it correct? -

I have built the chassis so far [step 302] and bit disappointed. The gear shifting is not smooth at all. Gear 1-2 works OK-ish but gear 3-4 quite bad, especially at Hi gear mode. Some cogs are cracking. There is one YouTube video which discusses this. The root cause seems to be too many cogs and UV joins transfering motion in non-linear fashion. Even after following the suggestions in above video it is still not smooth and engine pistons are jerking. Feels like TLG did not even properly test the model before releasing to market.
