In what I think was episode 2 of "Life on Mars" (which is a show about a police agent being taken back in time to 1973, it's really a great show, try and watch it at least once. I have the same problem with chain link fences (that's what they're called, I think). Anyway, here's a page of Bricklink's "lattice" pieces. I like the Sports net, it seems to be the easiest and most effective. Hope I helped!

You should see if it's possible to an old British cap - the kind Super Mario wears. There's a lot of practical uses for them, and they could also be used as a berret.
