Thanks for the info! Interesting. How can you tell that box is a 'UK box'?
-
Yeah, so 1877 was (only) sold in the US/North America. Do you also know where 1680 was sold? Only in the UK? That's what my (limited) research indicates so far. Brickset: ''Discovered' in the UK.' Or also in the US/NA? It seems to be very (véry) rare... In my opinion a set is only really complete if you have the instructions... (and maybe even the box) That's the biggest issue with 1680. I could build the set a couple of times, if it was just about the bricks (even with 'period approriate' bricks)

You're welcome and no problem All the LEGO Pirates ads are nice to see and know, from all kinds of different countries! Or is there already a separate topic for LEGO Pirate ads in general? I also love Kelceycoe's research. I can relate to that kind of niche information ;). I just have to find the time to read/keep up with it all For example the North-America exclusive sets. For an European, they're interesting and hard (expensive) to find, especially with instructions. (This applies to more sets, like 1680 for example. Not a Pirate set, but there is hardly any information available about where it was released etc.) [edit: Ah my hundredth post! ]

Part III - 1991 (well, some of it): ...and the rest.

Part two! Including this Pirates cartoon ad from 1989 (D.D. #37): -> To see the other ads I found today: Click! Unfortunately, the '89 volume D.D. at the thrift store wasn't quite complete. I think there should be more Pirates ads, from 1989 or 1990. Or maybe I missed them. It's quite a hassle to search through all the Ducks, with those thin pages. Plus my daughter wanted to go home ;). I bought the 1991 volume -unfortunately also not quite complete- and I still have to search through it. Who knows... Someting likes this one?

Yes, it was in #17 of 1989 If I have them, I've added all the Ducks covers to this album as well, followed by the ad: Click

The first ad reads: 'Pirates conquer toy stores. The new LEGOLAND Pirates are conquering all toy stores with no fewer than 10 boxes, both small and large. Full of good and evil pirates and soldiers, ships, sharks, parrots, palm trees, islands, and overflowing treasure chests. There's even a thrilling comic book! May 6th: Exciting Pirate Contest. To celebrate, there's an exciting Pirate Contest in almost all toy stores on Saturday, May 6th, starting at 1:30 PM. Dress up as a pirate (for example, wear an eyepatch) and come to your toy store. We won't tell you exactly what to do yet, but we will reveal the loot. The grand prize is a trip to LEGOLAND in Denmark, and there are 500 other LEGO prizes to be won. Stay tuned*, and see you on May 6th!' * 'Hou je haaks' is a Dutch expression and means something like 'keep it/stay hooks', of course referring to captain redbeard's hook hand.

Look what I found in a 1989 Donald Duck from a thrift store: the announcement of the launch of the Pirates theme in the Netherlands! Plus another one in a different Duck: Our daughter really likes reading Duckies. So I have an excuse to go through old Ducks when I find them in a thrift store I have already found quite a few: LEGO ads etc

In the meantime, I have all the 'correct' parts (variants), but we also moved to a new house. So I haven't had the chance to build it yet. I think I know where the parts are :), but the space also isn't there (yet).
