  1. "Last group of adventurers actually killed a decent amount of guards. Vorpalis wanted to cut loose and finish them off himself, so he invited them to duel at the Moone Palace. They really couldn't decline - they knew he had to be killed, or he wouldn't leave - and they went there to confront him. All that came back was bones. If you can make Vorpalis desperate enough to make quick work of you, you may be able to get him out of Mermont. The battle hardly ends there, though... No one has ever seen vorpalis fight fully unrestrained and lived. At least he's kind enough not to blast his own subjects and cities to smithereens, eh?"
  2. "You. To be honest, since your current Heroica record showed so few quests - namely, zero - I tried convincing Faust to not hire you, because of lack of experience. So no. I've only been with this group for a few days. i don't know if anyone here can handle themselves. All I know is the rest had track records that backed them up and you didn't. No offense o you or your skills in combat; I'm just looking at numbers here." Jinnipher gets the feeling there was another reason not even Gabriel was fully aware of. "Why I'm so weird? My father was mentally ill and knocked up a lab assistant. Might've been drugs or alcohol involved, I don't know. Imagine me, but with violent mood swings and the occasional speech impediment. That was how my biological father was. I could've ended up like him. Glad I didn't. He couldn't handle the son he had accidentally procreated, and had me sent to adoptive parents, tried to forget me instantly. Bastard. Brilliant man, at the very least - very prolific inventor in Charis at the time. So good they chased him out, because the technology he made was indistinguishable from witchcraft." Gabriel hesitates. "His name was Royce Cour." Lind formulates the same drink Gabriel did, but would he dare to drink it? "You know for a fact they'd just weaponize it. ...And why do you look so pleased?"
  3. And 138, where Gabriel just casually had sex with a prostitute.
  4. Since I forgot to respond to this point earlier Lind finds a few empty cans that could be used as cups. "You're right about that." Gabriel nervously raps his fingers on the makeshift cup. "Doctors always said that it might take only one miracle drug to get things wired right up here," Gabriel says, tapping his temple with his knuckles. "Who would've thought that hallucinogenic, explosive fog could do it. But that only confirms it. I have been acting different, haven't I?" Gabriel looks at Jinnipher, his face as deadpan as ever but his voice with a very slight inflection - for Gabriel, though, that was unheard of. "Never really felt concern for anyone 'til the party split."
  5. Karie shuffles across the room and leaves a glass of wine on one of the beds, keeping one for herself... "Already poured yourself two, huh?" Gabriel tries to drink more of his Moonball, but fails... "...Have I been acting different lately?" "I understand where you're coming from, sweetheart, but between now and Faust's execution, there are no others. You wouldn't be preventing that much bloodshed, just stirring the pot and causing more. Trust me. I wish I could be out there too. But I'm not sure if it's worth it." "That, and Aeolus will be tipped off something is wrong when his two bounty hunters return empty handed from an easy bounty..."
  6. "Must've been aged too much or not enough. I don't remember it being so... harsh." Gabriel forces down another. "...This is either a very good or a very bad sign. Something's not right." "He's an old Moone Elf. His name is Alante. He's been sleeping for a while."
  7. "In the meantime, if we decide to stay, I know what I'm doing." Gabriel goes through the canned food Eddy was sorting, finds an empty one, and goes to the wall of wine barrels. He finds the barrel marked moonshine, another marked flaming gumball, and makes himself the same drink he had ordered at the hall. "Bottom's up..." Gabriel gulps it down, seemingly with more difficulty then before...
  8. "Execution is only in two hours - sundown. It might be safer for you to just take a rest here."
  9. "It helps keep my mind off what's going on right now, sorry, thinking about your future... And you know how mothers are." At the mention of defeating Vorpalis, the guardsmen shifting through food lurches up. "So, yeah, introductions. I'm Eddy. Former guardsmen, before I decided I didn't want to serve Vorpalis. Honestly, as long as you can find a way to nullify his fog, it's just a battle of attrition from there. Since this is a city of his followers, he holds back when fighting in Mermont, to prevent collateral damage. Still, though, he has half of the city at his beck and call when fighting here, so it may be best that you battle him when he's alone, outside of Mermont. He won't pull any punches then, though, and he's absolutely brutal when he's fighting at full strength. Ever seen a man get his skull cracked like an egg before? I have, courtesy of Vorpalis..." "Bravely? Service? Pfft. I loved the kid - and as soon as this whole ordeal is over and it has time to set in, I'll probably sob like a little baby over him - but he ran away to hide. Listen, just... Thanks for dressing up the news nice, at least. Let me guess. Vorpalis got him. Right?"
  10. 48 is one of those quests where, the more I read it, the less pleased I am with it. Same with pretty much all of the Progg Quests, actually.
  11. "Glad to be okay. Loving the ponytail, by the way." says Merlay, running her hand through her own ponytail. Her nonchalant smile becomes a concerned frown. "Any news on my brother, Marlow?"
  12. 404 is the room number Rydel stated to gain access to the safehaven/hideaway, despite there not being a fourth floor to the inn. It's really stupid, and highlight below if you want to see the very obtuse joke. 404 is typically associated with the computer error "404-PNF", or "404 Page Not Found." In this case, it's "404 Party Not Found".
  13. "No. I don't, quite frankly."
  14. "Haven't caught me yet. I like having my head, thank you very much."
  15. It's another reference to the moon/space. Look it up. I'm curious to see how many space jokes people have caught, or the incredibly subtle pun 404 is part of.
  16. I step out into the confessional briskly, some moisture on my sleeve, as if I was wiping away water of some kind... "Thank you for allowing me to do that, Carlos."
  17. The party skulks through the fog, and, following Rydel's instructions, make their way to the Gibbous Inn, a safehaven from Vorpalis and his forces. They step inside, the innkeeper there to greet them. "Err... Hello, sirs and ladies, how may I-" "A suite. Room 404, please." It occurs to the party that the inn only had two floors. The innkeeper knowingly nods, and leads them to the stairs, to the nonexistent fourth floor... but hooks a right at the end, leading them down into a basement with a heavy metal door. The party steps down into the safe, yet slightly musty, haven... Judging by the barrels on the walls, this was officially a wine cellar. A bunch of spare cots were littered around the room, with an elder Moon Elf sleeping on one of them. A helmetted man rifles through some boxes. A young woman with a jetblack pony tail stands front and center, one hand on her hip. "I recognize you and the wife, Rydel, but not the rest of you. And why are you tied up?" "Long story. If someone could get the rope on Eloen and I, that'd be much appreciated... As she says, I am Rydel Buchaire. I would shake your hands, but mine are tied up." "Eloen Buchaire, pleasure to meet all of you." "And I'm Merlay."
  18. Protip, if you want to compress a three to four month quest into two, host in the summer. Looking at you, 138.
  19. "I'm sorry, sir, but I'm not your travel agent. may I continue with what I was saying without any more interruptions?"
  20. Moone Elves are a very very small population.
  21. "He built his kingdom on lies, silly, and made his own race first class! Would you let someone so prone to deception be king?"
  22. Thankfully, no guards were present. The fog, though sickening, was giving them decent cover too - where they were standing, very few people would be able to spot them unless looking deliberately for them.
  23. QM Note: Didn't catch your edit. If I had to say, I'd put him within hearing range of the woman, slightly away from the rest of the party (so within earshot/hearing range of the party and the woman, basically.) If you want that modified, I'd be ahppy to "It really is quite simple." continues the woman without missing a beat. "At one point in history, Vorpalis was a great hero in Mercution, before the demons broke out, thus the title "Kingblesser". After the demons broke free, he fought valiantly, cementing his title. Before that, though, he also conquered several rivaling kingdoms in the continet of Mercution, expanding what would become the Kingdom of Mercution. Vorpalis essentially conquered this land for the King of Mercution originally, presumably from many other kings; thus, "Kingbreaker". When Faust betrayed him and become king of Moone, this event occurred - Vorpalis broke his rule. So because of his service to Mercution and the dismantling of Faust's and other monarch's rule, Vorpalis is both "Kingblesser" and "Kingbreaker"." The woman smiles even wider. "Come on, it's true. He is. And I wouldn't be holding out for a Moone Elf suitor if I was you, there are so few of us, and almost zero are unmarried..." "If this safehaven is safe, they won't be a concern."
  24. Gabriel speaks in hushed tones, motioning for the party to step deeper into the fog so that they cannot be seen. As they do so, though, Gabriel's nervous tick - his hands shaking - gets worse. "I'm going to operate under the assumption you're dropping them off at a safehaven, and not the Guards base, because they'd be executed if you do. Wouldn't it make more sense for all of us to head to the safehaven in the meantime?" "He's pretty handsome, isn't he?" Jokes Eloen. Jinnipher recalls her rather annoying behavior of trying to set her up with a suitor, back when she was in Moone...
  25. "You better come back safe." Rydel scolds. "...Look, that came outwrong, didn't it...? Just, do what you can, and do what you have to, and if things go sour, run." Rydel offers his wrists, and Eloen does the same. They walk out, the two "captives' muttering directions to the Inn they would have to be sheltered in. Along the way, they reunite with four strangers - really the disguised Warlen, Lind, Karie, and Gabriel - in front of the sermon-spewing woman in the center of town. They spot each other through the veil of fog in the city center and make ways towards each other, rejoining the party in Mermont! Gabriel gives an odd glance towards Jinnipher. "If those two people who are tied up are who I think they are, I think you might've gotten too far into your role." "T-this man a friend of yours?" Meanwhile, the fanatic continues lecturing to the crowd. "Other aged texts also refer to a dragon known both as "Kingbreaker" and "Kingblessing", a clear sign of Vorpalis's loyalty to the king of Mercution and his rightful vendetta against the King of Moone, Faust..." "The nonsense people will be led to believe, hmph."
