Heroica RPG 2.0 - Mission #0: Last Of Its Kind
Endgame replied to Endgame's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
"Not a lot of us carry holo-projectors in these parts, least of all me. Though I hear a bunch of them are rigged up for whatever ceremony is going on in center city? As for what the ship looked like. Big... Gray... Lots of cannons. They rolled up with five ships. One of them was absolutely enormous." Faeja narrows her eyes. "That what you're here for? That event is well past its glory days. I don't peddle whatever they do. It's all... oddities, rarities, things that are less than legal, so the rumor goes. It used to be talk of the planet. I've never been near it. Rumor has it it's soon, though." The shipyard droid leans in, as if squinting at the gooey disguise Igaz (somehow willingly) chose to smear all over his face. His deception turns out to be mostly succesful, but failed to be good enough for full access. Different bits of code fire off in its simplistic mechanical brain, with Tester-Three still having a link to the droid's database. "You are... You are... You are... Jek?" In this moment of hesitation, the warbot detects that the very first guess had 2 rows entirely correct. For reference, that guess was: Black is b (B) White is w (W) Wbbb Bbww Bwbw Bwwb The droid leans back into its neutral position, not entirely fooled but revealing very helpful info in its moment of uncertainty. "...Unable to fully verify... Access not granted." -

Tester-Three works his cybernetic magic. His proficiency test is a success, and the party earns back a try - his next submission will not count. (That being said, it's hard to imagine that trick working on the droid a second time...) "Security protocols... updated?" The new pattern submitted has nine correct squares. Nine attempts remain. Would the party submit more guesses, or resort to more (perhaps Oozeling remnant based) deception? -

"The dreadnought is definitely real. We even know its name. It's the Epigraph. It showed up in atmosphere alongside some other pieces of Cydonia's fleet - we saw it enter out atmosphere, but we never saw it leave, unlike some of the others. Plus, apparently it might have even fired a few days ago? I don't know how true that is." "Hm, not that I know of. A few years back I saw listings for cloaking devices that obscured you on digital recordings, but not to the naked eye - even those still ran you a couple hundred credits. If the real deal is floating around on Gnorra, I've never seen it and I wouldn't know where to find it. Then again, if the real deal was right in front of my face I still probably wouldn't see it." -

Faeja looks on in horrified silence, her face going just a bit green. "Igaz, you... You just... Eurgh, some of that looks like it's still burning a little bit! G-guess you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, huh?" -

The war bot's first pattern seems to do pretty well for a first go - 10 of the 16 squares were correct, right off the bat. 9 attempts remained. And then, using his prowess with technology, the war bot makes some adjustments to the red droid and peek into its data banks. Would it take the Simple option through a backdoor, netting the party another attempt, or would it take the Skilled route, giving them further intel on the nature of the passcode? Failure at a given check would result in an attempt being removed... -
Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars RPG - Game Development
Endgame replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
Right now... none of that yet. Will there be in due time, if/when the game starts in full? Can't say! Honestly... probably? Heroica suffered from a very bad case of power creep that made making and running battles for higher level heroes a bit of a hassle, so I think trying to contain that would be best. That doesn't mean "no fun loot," in means being more careful with what you give out. It's important to remember how basic the early days of Heroica were. We don't need Heroica 2.0 to match Heroica 1.0's depth right out the gate - that game had years upon years to build and grow, as new classes and mechanics manifested! Hell, some of them came so late in the life cycle I didn't even get a chance to use them, and I QMed like 15 times. I'm sure fun drops will find its way into your hands eventually. I have a feeling that spells could very well become a combat obligation in the future, so I agree with you there. (Consider this a Bold Prediction, but I have the feeling that telpeortation spells are going to be huge in this game, especially if MMs start making battle grids bigger. Right now movement is slow.) And on matching the spell check thing: yes, and I was thinking of ways to fix that today. This was an issue that became clear to me when KotZ's spell backfired. On one hand, attacks can fail too... but that's because the enemy is passing either a dodge check of some nature, has armor, or both, so an attack doing zero doesn't feel as bad. However, hitting a DC and then gaining nothing just feels awful by comparison, because the only thing you're rolling against is an arbitrary number, not an opponent. The quick and easy fix is to say that if you meet the DC, add one to your check and then proceed as normal, but I don't know if that scales well long term? Kind of feels like a hacky solution to me, but I'm not sure. Insert a "this is why we test!" here. It's becoming my mantra. -

"They're almost fully random... for whatever reason I don't think there is ever any more than three black squares in any row or column on the grid. Something about IDs of with full black lines being made obsolete or something? Never quite got all the info on that one." The Oozeling dregs are scattered outside Faeja's ship... their outer carapaces had started fading to a sickly gray, but their bright red red and blue goo remained fairly vibrant... MM Note: You're lucky I decided to color the Oozelings in an arbitrary way! -

"Control systems? That's usually reserved for those high-class ritzy city satellites, where politicians and holo-stars spend their summers. If it rains, it rains, if it doesn't, it doesn't." The woman shrugs. "Does your mission have anything to do with taking down a dreadnought, or are you just curious? Because honestly... you may be a match for a lot of things on this planet, Oozelings included, but I dunno if anything is a match for a Cydonian dreadnought. But maybe I'm just a pessimist." -

"Well, I haven't seen them do a bit of construction work or renovations in this place since they got here. They'd have to tear everything up to replace the old system And all the droids are the same, so shiplot security is almost certainly still the way it was before the Cydonians got here - shoddy as ever. The cloaked soldiers are a total rumor, and to be honest, I think you may be right that they're just meant to spook us. Yelana, I'm a merchandiser who transports cargo crates." she says, rapping her knuckles against one of the boxes she was sitting on, as if to prove her point. "I don't know the first thing about detecting a cloaked ship. So I can't help you there. I just hope that my info on how to get through the security here is enough to help you on whatever mission you're on. Really, I can't thank you enough for getting rid of those Oozelings." -

While I agree that the spell system might need a second look at, I don't think requiring investment into a certain skill to cast spells is necessarily a bad thing. Keep in mind on character creation, you only need to spend 2 of your creation points/EXP to get a magic based proficiency up to 2, which is the minimum needed to start slinging spells. Remember, builds require and investment; and because we currently don't have a class system, you'll never find yourself in a situation like in Heroica 1.0, where certain classes would be forever locked off to you depending on your very first choice. All builds are possible at any time, given the time investment, which I think is a nice feature of the system. -

"Oh, well, just a figure of speech. I'd probably get fired though, and that's no good. No longer a concern, though!" says the woman, finally smiling. "As for why I seem nervous, there are rumors swirling around that the Cydonians have invisible cloaked soldiers roaming around Gnorra. We know that they have at least one dreadnought still cloaked in atmosphere, but, well, yeah. If they are listening, they would've probably already done something?" "Good idea..." The group takes a few paces and steps into the now Oozeling free cargo hold of Faeja's ship, the woman hopping up and sitting on a pile of sturdy looking crates. The odd smell of rubber still clung to the walls and the insulation, but thankfully, the Oozeling menace was put down before it could become a widespread issue. "Don't worry about the mess... I was going to get this thing washed soon anyway, it'll all come off. I hope. Anyway, here's the deal. The Cydonians have the spaceport on lockdown, and they have boosted security around the perimeter here a little bit, but the usual system of getting access to your own ship here is still the same as the one we had before the occupation. That is to say... It's kinda shoddy. I learned this trick when my boss had me go grab something from his ship, but didn't have his ID card on him. You can spoof an ID and fake out those red Shipyard droids into giving you ship access. Our ID cards have a custom chip inside that lets us in and out of the shiplot, but since spots are reassigned so often, the Shipyard droids are trained to just recognize a generic pattern printed on the IDs. Their eyesight is so bad, even pen and paper can fool them, sometimes..." Faeja holds out her ID card, displaying a 4x4 grid of white and black squares. ~~~ FORGING ACCESS You are tasked with fabricating the correct 4x4 grid of black and white squares. You may submit answers in the form of an image, or simply in the form of four lines (representing the whole 4 by 4 grid), as long as you state which character represents black, and which one white. For an example submission: AAAA BBBB AAAA AAAA Here, A is white and B is black. Upon submitting a pattern, you will get told how many of your squares were the correct color - between 0 and 16. If you get all 16 right, you will have successfully gained access to Jek's ship. That being said, the shipyard Droids are not totally incompetent, and will sound alarms after 10 attempts. However, someone who is savvy with technology, engineering, or perhaps even able to convince the droid of relaxing security measures might be able to squeeze out a few more allowed attempts... with the right proficiency check. Please post any submitted guess to this thread, so that your fellow party members may see the result of your guess and build off of it. ~~~ "If anyone asks, you didn't hear this from me." -

I agree that it is worth taking a look at the proficiencies and the spell system to refine them; to be truthful, although the occult played a major role in Heroica 1.0, what with demons and ghosts and such, I do not know how much of that people would like in 2.0. Consider it added to my List Of Things To Revisit. That being said, cryptozoology sounds like a very fun proficiency, but part of me is afraid that it is too close to Nature. And you learn something new every day, because I had no idea that "philter" meant that. I was just going by the spelling on the Common Items sheet, which you can find on Page 12 of this topic. Might be worth renaming that to "filter." -

If your target is wearing kinetic armor and you are using a kinetic weapon, the target will take less damage, because they are wearing armor that is resistant to the weapon that is being used against them. Enemies in this game are built, and function identically to, player characters - they can equip armor as well. The Oozelings didn't demonstrate even a tenth of what is possible to do with the enemy parties in this new system. -

What's odd about it? Energy armor only defends against attacks from Energy Weapons, and Elemental armor only defends against attacks from Elemental weapons. As of now, no, there are no different elements. All Elemental damage is simply Elemental. -

I apologize if I missed a question... yes, diagonals are allowed. I believe Oozeling B moved diagonally round one? The Armor Mod is from the enemy's perspective. If you attack an enemy with +1 Kinetic Armor with a Kinetic Weapon, the damage your attack does decreases by one, because the type of your weapon matched their armor. A general way to state it without using pronouns or words like "player" and "enemy" is "if an assailant strikes a target who is wearing armor with the same type as the assailant's weapon, the target may apply their armor mod to reduce the strength of the hit." Hope that clears things up. From a definition standpoint, perhaps, but I think that the connotations and application in the game world make them different enough to be worth separating. Plus, Occult could cover legends in the same vein as Big Foot or other mystic, but decidedly non-religious, entities/phenomena. -

MM Note: Been 24 hours, and so... Round Three of the Oozeling Bruising: Agents' Turn: >Yelana versus Oozeling Stoic: (1 out of 2 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod) - (0 out of 2 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 2 damage to Oozeling Stoic. >Kleek versus Oozeling B: (0 out of 1 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod) - (1 out of 1 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 0 damage. >Enson versus Oozeling B: (0 out of 2 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod) - (1 out of 1 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 0 damage. >Igaz versus Oozeling Stoic: (1 out of 2 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod successes) - (0 out of 2 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 2 damage to Oozeling Stoic. >Tester Three versus Oozeling A: (1 out of 2 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod) - (0 out of 1 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 2 damage to Oozeling A - Oozeling A is no more! >Dunola versus Oozeling B: (1 out of 1 proficiency + 1 weapon mod) - (1 out of 1 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 1 damage - Oozeling B is ash! Enemies' Turn: >Oozeling Stoic versus Dunola: (1 out of 1 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod success) + (0 out of 1 skill successes + 0 armor) = 2 damage. Round Four of the Oozeling Bruising: Agents' Turn: >Yelana versus Oozeling Stoic: (2 out of 2 proficiency successes + 1 weapon mod) - (1 out of 2 Skill successes + 0 armor) = 2 damage to Oozeling Stoic - Oozeling Stoic falls silent! ... Things wrap up at a rapid pace. Igaz and Yelana take out their frustrations on the quiet Oozeling Stoic. Tester-Three accurately calibrates his aim, now that he had ample movement data, and a shot from his arm cannon scatters one of the Oozelings across the asphalt. Dunola, meanwhile, satisfies her urge to combust by scorching another Oozeling. The Stoic finally hits his mark, bruising Dunola with some well-aimed prjectile spit, only to be put down by one last shot from Yelana. The battle was won! All agents gain 1 EXP. Please distribute the loot (however much slime residue might be left on it): Plasma Potion x3: Each restores 1d6 of health on use. Nanite Philter x2: Can be used to remove 1 status effect from an agent. Energy Cell: Can be used in conjunction with an Attack action. Doubles the Weapon Mod of that attack. 60 credits Faeja seems quite pleased with the result! "Oh, thank you! Thank you thank you thank you! Seems those Oozeling absorbed some of my cargo, but you are welcome to keep it... Thank you so, so much, really. My boss would've killed me if I didn't get this in soon... So, ah, you guys are... gonna sleuth around that dart, right? I... Might have a tidbit of info for you..." she says, looking around as if someone was watching. Heroica RPG 2.0 - Mission #0: Last Of Its Kind
Endgame replied to Endgame's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
MM Note: You're right, I looked back at the Weapon Check formula, and I misinterpreted something. Here is how it goes: (Proficiency Successes + Weapon Mod) - (Skill Successes + Armor Mod) To break down those four items: Proficiency successes: each weapon type (Melee, Short Ranged, Long Ranged, Artillery) has a matching Proficiency. When using a Melee weapon with the Melee Weapons 3 Proficiency, I would roll 3 dice. For each dice that came up as 4 or above, that counts as a Proficiency Success. I sum all those up and we get the Proficiency Successes. That is why the number you see varies; it depends on how well you rolled. Weapon Mod: This is where I goofed. You see, I had been treating this as a dice roll as well; that's why you see either 0 or 1 "Weapon successes" listed in battle calculations. However, that is incorrect. You don't roll for weapon mod; you just add it. This is where the battle calculations have been off thus far. Skill successes: Function identically to Proficiency, but you roll a number of dice equal to the target's Skill stat. This one has been executed right as well, as far as I can see. Armor Mod: Not unlike Weapon Mod, if the Armor you're wearing matches the type of damage the enemy is dealing, you get to add an Armor Mod to the calculation, thereby decreasing the attack's damage equal to the Armor's, well, Armor Mod. So, I apologize for botching item 2 on this list - that being said, with only 2 rounds in the bag, you've chipped through a lot of the enemy party's HP pool while taking only 1 damage as a party, so I don't think it does much for anyone to go rewind and reroll. But, from now on, if it is helpful, I will list battle calculations as, for example: (2 out of 3 Proficiency successes + 1 Weapon Mod) - (1 out of 2 Skill successes + 1 Armor Mod) = (2+1)-(1+1) = 1 So you can check everything about the calculation itself. Sorry if this was something of a spiel, but it is good that we are getting the Weapon Check tidied away now. Thanks for bringing issues to my attention - this is why we test, after all. -

It's a little bit more work to manage on the MM side, but that being said, I'm pretty close to finishing my program to calculate damage automatically, so I guess it makes up for it on that end. That being said, I apologize for not explaining the spell system well enough, KotZ, seeing as your spell currently can't do much of anything until you get some points in Nature/Occult. I should've explained the system better. -

Yelana's sniper shot goes wide of the mark, the oozeling stoic's movements surprisingly complex. Kleek also tries to singe the blob with a bolt of plasma, but the Stoic manages to absorb the attack without suffering any major damage. Enson, meanwhile, lifts his hammer and brings it crashing down on one of the lesser alien adversaries. It tries to dodge, but still gets a tentacle pinned beneath the hammer. Tester-Three levels its arm cannon at an Oozeling and blasts it away, leaving it hanging from a thread, as Igaz's lance glances off the wily Stoic. Dunola points her flamethrower at the wounded Oozeling C and pushes the trigger. A burst of hissing flame engulfs the Oozeling, and some gas inside of it ignites as the alien combusts with a satisfying pop! The Oozelings themselves mount a somewhat impotent offense, Tester-Three sidestepping the Stoic's spit as Enson deflects a lunging Oozeling A. Oozeling B slides into position, still rather healthy. "Wow, where did you guys learn to fight? You're pretty good!" The conflict continues! The Enemy Party: "Fwuuurgggghh..."
