Thormanil attacks the Roc from the front row.

I'm not terribly creative on my own, so I've got a solid source material that I want to adapt to a Heroica setting. I think I've done a pretty good job of capturing the flavor of various mobs/enemies from the source and translating them into the game (albeit without defining any stats/numbers). I've got a few ideas on how to do some non-combat challenges, as well, though those are a mixed bag. I've done some DnD stuff before that I'm happy with, but it's a lot more easier to set up an encounter with a selection of arbitrary pass/fail skill checks, because in our setting, it's just a matter of "I cast a fireball at the wall of vines" or "I pick the lock" and boom, the path is cleared. The difficulty lies in providing an obstacle that can be approached in a multitude of ways, but isn't immediately solvable by any single method (in my opinion). Might not be the most clear explanation, but I hope the point gets across. Recently I've thought about ways that I could deviate from the source such that I'm not just retelling the story. I think I've solved that one, just need to flesh that out a bit more. Another difficult aspect is that I don't want to just introduce another "Aspiring-Lord-of-the-Universe" type villain. I was going to plan a fairly linear series of quests, but I think I'd be better off planning all the parts out in advance and letting each party choose the arc they wish to tackle. The downside, of course, is that I'd need to do a whole bunch more set building beforehand so that I have all arcs covered. I think the most intimidating part of this, for me, is the combat balancing. While I've got a host of ideas that could balance the playing field regardless of the party composition/level difference/etc, I don't want to throw anything too complex into the mix. All the QM's to this point have had a lot of interesting and creative ways to take advantage of each class' skillset, so building off that I think I can put together some solid puzzles/obstacles without relying on natural 20's That said, if anyone wants to offer their services as a coach, I'd love to get some backup on the battle planning. *This is all assuming that I ever find the time to finally put this all together and build the sets, heh.

Thormanil gives Arx a Phoenix Essence then takes a step back, shield raised. "Mind takin' that to Guts? Can't have him slackin' off!" <What am I, your errand boy?> Arx scoffs, as he delivers the essence.
-
"Fly me to safety, Arx!" <Screw that, you're too damn heavy.> Also, be sure to check the ceiling for traps.
-
From his lofty position a couple feet in the air, Thormanil needlessly shouts down to the team, "Hey, someone pop Guts back up!" Oh, and, uh... Thormanil continues his attack.
-
Thormanil repeats.
-
Suddenly, after a fairly smooth battle, the wyvern retaliates against Thormanil's pathetic attempt to strike it down, blasting the party with all manner of fiery-poison-devil's-brew-nastiness. Thormy: "Whoops. Honest mistake, folks."
-
Alright, Pie, you can stop fixing my dice rolls now
-
"Whaddya say, Arx? You probably couldn't do worse'n I'm doin' already, hah!" <So funny. Sure, I'll take the flying pair of jaws, you all worry about the tough ones.> Arx said, with a toothy grin. "Sure wish Benji was here. I'll have to pester him to teach me how t'understand you." Thormanil repeats.
-
"You've gotta be kiddin' me! These birds're too damn quick." Finding his footing in the cart, Thormanil attacks the Roc from the back row. Gonna leave the dangerous one for our lucky dancer.
-
Struggling to land a hit on the bounding bird, Thormanil repeats his attack.
-
Having almost been bucked off the bird, Thormanil repeats his attack against the now sedated Aepyornis A.
-
"and a small dragon swoops down over them" Aw c'mon, couldn't you just name it dragon-something-or-other instead of a wyvern? "Gimme a little boost, Arx!" Thormanil shouts, as he leaps from the cart onto the back of Aepyornis A, stabbing at it from the front row.

I thought we were sleeping and waiting for the sun to rise
-
He should have kept his enemies at an arm's length.
-
Still a bit shaken by the returned mail, Thormanil replies "Yeah.. or, well, I'm not sure. I hope not, but who knows what that witch may have done.." he pauses for a moment, then explains "Baba's her name, I had an unfortunate run in with her out in Salmanda.. if either the name or place mean anythin' to ya."
-
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed with the unanswered letter to Bluto. It was the one of my three that I put the most thought into and as far as Thormanil would be aware, might have stood a chance of working . I, of course, understand why it couldn't work, but it'll take some time before Thormy can put together the pieces. I'm not 100% on all of Bluto's and Baba's arcs, though I've skimmed. Are they ongoing? I'm going to have to see to it that Thormy gets onto at least one of their quests in the future if so.

While browsing the orc's wares, two magical letters poof into existence in front of him. "Mizuki, have I met a Mizuki before? Huh.. I'll have to find 'em next time I'm at the Hall. And my letter to Bluto..!? What the..." Thormanil mutters to himself, brow furled in confusion. "I uh.. I'll pass.. thanks." My inventory is subject to change: Fighter's Boots & Wyvern Tailblade will be gone (unless they, too, get returned, heh), and I'm up a Grand Potion and Venom.

"Glad t'have yer support. Just hope ya don't change yer mind when the storm rolls in. Can practically hear the thunder already." He turns from Karstaal to Olmstyr and the party, "I don't know about you all, but I'd kill for an ale and a cot. Plenty of tension here today, think sleep'd do us all good."
-
Okay, okay, I give up! Unless doubling up is allowed, I've now exhausted all believable alignments for Tarvalk, heh. Time to let Scuba do his thing.
-
Ooh, loot and experience! Let's drag this out!
-
Well to be fair, I thought I was nudging people towards their true alignments... Apparently I just have really poor inferring skills and thus had to slide my two all over the place, heh.
