  1. "Oh, dear! Does that mean that we will lose? I don't like fighting valiant men." "I thought as heroes we were supposed to be fighting bad guys, not noble men."
  2. I attack Guard 1 from the Front Row. "I'm not sure if this is the right things to do. There are so many of them and we are the intruders, so they have every right to repel us."
  3. I attack the Jailer from the Front Row with the Slimy Sword. Sorry guys, I wasn't able to get on and when I did, I didn't even see that there was an enemy.
  4. "Yes, those who pursue wealth are often left disappointed." I say philosophically.
  5. I laugh. "You missed the boat? How did that happen? I heard many stories in my time here, but of this sort. A hero missing his boat ride? Ha, ha! Where were you? You must have quite enjoyed the place."
  6. The more into the situation we get the more I don't like it. "Maybe I could just go and talk to him." I offer hesitantly.
  7. "Well enough, I suppose." I respond mechanically. "You have not been around these parts for sometime I'll wager."
  8. I wave at the new character entering the hall, not from friendship, but just wondering if the eyeless figure can actually see my signal.
  9. I look from party to needy citizens, not understanding all that is said, but not liking what I do understand. "Oh, dear, I hope we don't have to kill anyone!" I murmur once the party is outside.
  10. "Hmmm...I didn't know heroes went on vacations."
  11. Oh, so it wasn't just a bad dream!
  12. ...before reviving...twice!
  13. "Oh, my dad is the smartest!"
  14. "I suppose few quests made me feel more like a sellsword than that one."
  15. "Well...I don't know about all that." I blush. "I mean, I know I have been afraid, but my daddy always used to say that bravery wasn't about not being afraid, but about facing my fears."
  16. "I suppose..." I reply hesitantly to Hoke's first comment. "I have to say, I am not sure whether the title came first or the organization." I trail off until Hoke extends his hand. I grasp it firmly. "Prezel. Monk Pretzel. I do believe we have quested together once...but I cannot recall where...Ah, I think it was that time when we had to solve the case with the mummies. Funny quest, that one."
  17. "Perhaps I am missing something...Are you saying that such people are heroes and we are not? Our hall is structured the way it is because it enables willing hands to be placed together to overcome problems that single good deed doers would not be able to handle. I guess it depends on how you define a hero. To me, we are heroes so long as we stick to the noble principals this organization was built on. It's when we stop caring who is asking for our help, but just being willing to support the highest bidder that we stop being heroes and start moving into the full-fledged sell-sword category."
  18. "Really?!? Wow! I just came from Eubric. I have to say that the city is...quite an interesting place. Nothing like home. Much more noisy and confusing and there are all sorts of people who get offended by one another and who don't say "Thank You" when they receive gifts. But there are a lot of nice people. They like me. They just don't really like each other so much." I beam with delight when the boy mentions his fascination for heroes. "We do get really nice armour, although most of it we either came with or earn in our quests. Look at this sword!" I show him the Slimy Sword, my eyes widening with excitement. "I took this from a really yucky slime man who was trying to hurt me and my friends!"
  19. "The problem is that the more we tell ourselves we're mercenaries, the more like that we will become and the less likely we will be to respond to situations that need our help when no monetary gain is involved. Furthermore, it is not as if we are restricted to living in these walls. There is much good that can be done without our being asked. Complaining about a problem doesn't change it."
  20. "There have been quests where little or no reward was involved. These quests, from what I have seen have gained the most wholehearted attention from Heroica. I remember once there was a quest where a little girl offered 1 coin per hero who came. I have never seen the hall clear out so quickly. From what I hear, no one actually accepted the money from the girl at the end. I believe many heroes are ready to give to their own hurt, but they have yet to find a cause worth pouring their all into. It's true that there are times when we serve money, and I think in those times when people can afford to pay, there is nothing wrong with us accepting. Of course, when we compromise our values for gain...well...that is a problem."
  21. "Hi, Charlie!" I say, realizing I had not yet introduced myself due to my interest in the dog. "I'm Petaldan. Pleased to meet you. What are you doing around these parts? Are you going to catch a ship?"
  22. I step back a little from the dog, realizing it's a stray, and a little more cautiously extend a hand to it, noting with interest Matthias talking to it.
  23. "I do not entirely disagree with you, but how much of the greater acts of good would we be able to have done without them. I certainly don't deny that Heroica has it's greedy members, but one cannot deny either that this very city that we sit it would not be still standing if heroes had not defended it multiple times from enemies that others never even noticed. We could not have done that without the tools of our trade."
  24. Yeah, I mean if you want to find creative ways of challenging heroes, definitely look at Endgame quests. He's quite the master of it, though I have to say that it becomes tedious.
