Generic Contest Discussion
SaperPL replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The idea is good and exactly my point, but seeing the amount of high quality builds or bigger sized models that did not win in this contest, you can clearly see that outside the pool of people who already won there still are people who will build big high quality models that are going to discourage others from competing. But it somewhat makes sense to not have same people scoring the prizes, so it also makes sense this way. -

There were times were Bricksafe literally didn't load for me while I didn't have issues with other hostings. It's not always that it doesn't work for everyone, just saying. Making a special category that is exclusive to people who already won previous contests doesn't make sense if you want more people to take part IMO. As for separate classes making things more complicated - that's true, but whether it's worth it or not matters - if you can bring lots more people to participate by making it slightly more complicated then that could be a win. That makes sense, the sole part of building your entry is fun, but it still comes to mostly just entrants voting, that's why I'm thinking about bringing more people to participate. -
Generic Contest Discussion

I think the Jury should be vetting the entries against the rules they prepared and not voting which ones are better, in the first phase. Then there should be some kind of short period where disqualified would try to appeal and present their stance/interpretation of the rules and change the decision which could happen if rules were not precisely stated and thus left something to interpretation. After that popular vote would be a fair game. For making more people take part in the contests - I would consider making separate size classes for each place, but I know this is a double edged sword where it could've been unfair if there's objectively better entry that didn't get to the podium as second place because it was in bigger size class. Food for thought though as I think some people would try their strength in the contest if they weren't necessarily competing against people who can spend unlimited amount of money for specifically coloured bricks. The number of votes would decide the order of the prizes between the classes' winners. For more people voting - I'm not sure that complicating the voting process is a good idea - maybe just picking 5 entries you like (each one point) would work better to get bigger amount of people voting if people still vote on what they like and assuming initial Jury vetting against the rules? Allowing contestants to vote without 50 posts seems like a good idea. Also I'm in for some leniency towards submissions that had the image hosting failed in the entries thread while the topic had them working. There may be situations where a hosting site from the other side of the world won't work for us and the original creator doesn't know about it until it's too late. -
The amount of elements is not the same thing as the size. I've got a small model (the red and black cars in my signature) that has 445 pieces and is really small. Size wise, I'd say those are medium sized models and also the amount of parts match to medium sized sets. While I agree about this restricting creativity, my point is that even when you explicitly state that the contest is firstly about how close to the original model you are, people will still vote on what they like. I believe that even if mods explicitly stated that the voting should be about which is the most alike the original set, a lot if not most of the people would still pick based on what they like and not based on how well the model is resembling the original set. So I prefer creativity within specified limits - TC18 was like that iirc, and there were some really creative entries submitted.

I believe that contests should be made and executed in a way that there's no doubt who the winner is and there shouldn't be any arbitrary overriding of the results by the Jury if the contest is supposed to be fair, that's why I'm in for the Jury vetting the submissions first against the rules (which need to be precisely specified) and then the popular vote should decide. I don't argue with that, but that doesn't mean I can't give my feedback on the execution of the contest, so the next time it'll hopefully will get better... Finally, once again the size issue - without the strict scale requirement many smaller remakes that are perfectly executed didn't even make it to top 10 (although indy transport did), so it feels disheartening for those who prefer small builds and I'm not sure whether it makes sense to compete in such open contests with small builds in the future. And thanks to @HorcikDesigns and @MangaNOID for giving me your votes :)

I have to say that I am disappointed by how @Samolot's submission was ruled out from the podium. If it was about the use of non-contemporary pieces at all, then I would agree with it (albeit I caught late that Thirdwigg used the crane hook as well), but the rule of "staying true to original" wasn't clearly explained that you shouldn't use modern approach to building against classic sets that had just outline built with Technic beams. Staying true to original could mean keeping the shape and vibe of the model, not necessarily the technique that was used to achieve same overall shape of the model. This exact set that @Samolot picked wasn't like the supercar set where it was full see through all over the place as it has pretty bulky and opaque inside structure, so it was like middle ground here when it comes to the vibe this set had. And his entry model also has some gaps similar to the original around the cabin. What blows my mind here is that @Brickend's entry was put out of the podium because "it feels like the set was kinda studless already" where you could've been consistent and could state the same as for @Samolot's entry, but you didn't, maybe because it'd be too picky here? Anyway by no means the 8464 is a studless set - it has like <15% of liftarms in it's construction and it's mix of both studded and studdless techniques, with studded structure dominating the build. Also vetting by moderators should be first before the voting goes live - If @Samolot's and @MangaNOID's entries were (or were to be) disqualified, then it means that there was 274 points that could've been distributed differently in the voting. For things being clear, I'd like for future contests to have vetting of the submissions first before voting which would be then the final verdict unless the Jury would need to decide the order between two entries with same amount of points. Finally after seeing that in the end, the contest indeed was finally decided by which model was closest to the original, it feels a bit confusing that first we have to compete outside the rules to gather points where we can loose just because others picked bigger models to recreate (and people are drooling over big models over something that is small and thus challenging to recreate) and not necessarily delivered properly on that while a lot were left outside of the "Top 10" selection because of the popular vote.

[MOC] Mini Technic Rat Rod
SaperPL replied to SaperPL's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks! I get what you mean. I try mimicking what Lego does in their instructions and I know there are instructions on rebrickable that have like 200 pages with one or two bricks added with each step taking whole page. It's not that comfortable to read not to mention the size of the PDF. -

I've made the PDF instructions for this model - available for free on rebrickable: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-85493 -
Well, that's the dilemma here because cutting some slack to someone who picked something big and couldn't execute it perfectly vs someone who picked up something small to execute it perfectly may or may not be unfair. Picking up a good set for this contest was also part of the challenge, and for example like I said in Samolot's entry topic, I feel like he picked a set that couldn't be built with all the features functioning the same because the air tanks are not available anymore. This might have been a trap for many more complex sets that you could fall in where there was some kind of part that was crucial for the functioning of it that's not made anymore. So it's like whether should we cut those contestant some slack and give extra credit to them for picking up something that was hard to do, or should we give extra credit to the ones that picked an optimal set to for the task to execute perfectly? Obviously if someone perfectly executed a big and complex model, then it deserves extra credit like you said, but not if someone cut corners when it comes to the rules of the contest and made a great model, but did not meet all requirements stated in rules. By the way vetting against the rules should be first before rating what you like the most IMO. Because if we ended up with top 10 amazing models that are not adhering to the rules and the Jury is picking from these, while there were perfectly executed entries by the rules that didn't get to this phase because they were slightly smaller and easier to make, it wouldn't be fair and would mean the voting system is flawed this way.

I actually think it could. Considering the rules and the spirit of the current contest, the size and complexity of the model might have not been taken into account as deciding factor. In this situation where your hovercraft and and GerritvdG's forklifts were perfectly executed along bigger builds and these would have landed many times as a third and fourth and sixths because they are smaller means that if there was an even split of points or smaller gap between the places, if those smaller models were picked more often than the some that were picked as firsts, it could make a difference. With that said, I wonder how many people actually focused on perfect execution of the task when voting rather than the complexity of the model. We'll probably see it in the results, but I wonder if my approach to the terms was correct.

Effe's MOC Corner

how did you get your hands on "a few" of these if there's a limit of 1 per customer? I want at least two of those. -
Apart from the seats you've got a metal hook and air tank (I think it's not available anymore, am I right?) so when I got to a point where I've seen all of those "top 10" executing perfectly every check, I picked on those details. For same reason of picking on the non-contemporary parts, the T1 camper didn't make it to the top 10 in my spreadsheet because it used the old panels at the front where it was a significant part of it's looks. Looking back at this event against the way I rated the entries, I think the crucial part was picking something that would be optimal for remake and wouldn't force you to use non-contemporary parts or model team styling and at the same time not picking something too easy/simple like I did. I can see the air tank being pretty hard thing to drop in this set and make a fake one just to use only contemporary pieces, so if others were to be nitpicky like I was, this might have been a too ambitious choice. The model is perfect on its own though and I was really itching to go against my principles I set for voting and put it as my first, but I guess you'll have others voting for it, so let's see the best entry win :)

I feel like the system with a gap is good for contests where there are strict rules for models being somewhat in the same theme/scale like the previous two contests, but this one was kind of different as since you don't have apples-to-apples comparison, at some point you're going to just pick a random thing from two which are both top quality and adhering to the rules, or for example comparing small hovercraft model to a big truck you'll end up having to chose simply by theme and scale which you like more rather than trying to objectively rate each of those. Anyway we'll have to see what others have to say if at all it's on their mind after this contest.

After pedantically going over every submission and vetting it against the rules, and then picking out from the top 10 from my list, I've selected this model as the best, BUT it was close to being in tie with Arctic Rescue by Kio Liex and howitzer's hovercraft. What gave you the edge was that that I could see some really cool building techniques incorporated into the chassis and that was decisive over the other builds that went unscathed through my rule vetting :) Good Luck Thirdwigg!

Awesome, Thanks! :D Also, I took my vote, but it was hard and painful because some of my top 6 were really tied in quality and I had to give some of those significantly lower amount of points. @Jim - do you think it would be possible for future contests to have option to choose alternate voting points spread if I felt that there were ties at each step? For example 6 points for #1 and #2, 4 points for #3 and #4 and 3 points for #5 and #6 which still adds up to the same total amount of point, but it's not like you can favour anyone specifically by giving him like 20 points at once. Alternatively having option to select 5 which you like and give 4 of them 5 points and 6 points to the one you like the most. I feel like the jump from 10 to 6 points is pretty steep especially when I had really hard time picking between two or three from the top of my list.

27: 10 35: 6 16: 4 1 : 3 11: 2 17: 1 This was really hard to come to this conclusion. I ended up with this result by trying to objectively vet entries against the rules and I still ended up with "top 10" that I had to go over pedantically and then subjectively decide the order. Pains me the most that I can't distribute specific amount of points as I like because this way I had to penalise someone for falling a bit short in my subjective review of the "top 10".

I remember that his entry images did work, but it might be a poor temporary hosting that doesn't keep the image for longer than specified time or he used a temporary cached link instead of explicitly generating the link. I remember seeing it there in the entries. A bit of bummer for such amount of work to not even compete in the contest...
