LEGO Star Wars 2023 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!
Mandalorianknight replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I'm glad everyone likes the advent Calendar so much, and I figured I'd see how it compared to the averages I calculated in my spreadsheet earlier this year. The counts in terms of figs, microbuilds, etc are actually average, as is the number of new prints. However, I think it's not so much how many figs/builds as what they are. This is the first time in awhile we've had CANON figure scaled builds in an advent calendar (ewok glider, palpatine's throne, STAP), and those 5 figures include some very desirable ones (212th trooper, endor leia, and Omega as previously mentioned). We're also continuing to get a gonk every year, which is great. This is the only correct response. The mechs are overpriced and worse than the microfighters in every conceivable way. -

The lack of a new cap is bad, but not set-breaking- After all, it's a $200 set with one fig, the fig should not be the focal point of the set. But it would have been SOMETHING in what is otherwise a bad set. This can't be held, which is a pretty big annoyance to me. I'm not asking for it to be able to survive impact with an object or anything, but you should at least be able to pick it up by a handle. It's also a horrible mess of technic on the back. I'm not asking for it to look 100% accurate on the back, but it'd be nice if it at least kept the rounded look instead of a flat disc on the back. -

Only reason I hate it is the price, it's a perfect $15 battle pack. $21 is overpriced IMO, I think the other 501st battle pack this year was better (Imagine going back and telling someone in 2019 we'd have 3 501st battle packs by 2023) I thought Yavin actually had a fair amount of depth to it rather than being a pure facade like lots of lego buildings. It's definately a playset, not an MBS set, but I'm still hoping to get my hands on it. Yoda's fighter continues to be an insane choice and one of the few times I've fullheartedly believed something is a complete waste of a set slot. It brings nothing new to the table, it's not a cheap way to obtain otherwise hard-to-get characters, it's not an iconic vehicle, there's nothing there. I really do like that advent calendar. I think this is the first time one'll be a day 1 buy for me as opposed to waiting for sales post-christmas. The figs are excellent and I love that we're getting a fair number of figure-scaled builds in this one that can be used outside the context of the calendar. -

If anything, it unfortunately makes it more likely it'll be a repeat. Though to be fair, I think this is a situation where I'd actually prefer another batmobile with Batman and Joker, if it was significantly cheaper than the skyline set. -

It's the emperor. He's never addressed as Sheev in the films or shows at all, I believe, though technically the Aftermath novels that first call him Sheev do so in a flashback taking place between eps 1 and 2. Seriously though, this is an EXCELLENT figure selection. Usually (excluding the holiday figs) it's a desirable fig or two and then garbage for the others, but the three non-holiday figs on the box are all very desirable, what with it being a clone only in a $140 set, a main character only in a $170 set, and another major character only in an $80 diorama. (Another side note: if anyone plays Galaxy of Heroes, the next Galactic Legend is rumored to be Endor Leia, so it's funny to me that she's in a couple sets this year after going 8 years without a fig) -

Ashnflash says it's endgame cap, which would still be nice. Star wars used to frequently have exclusive figs that weren't holiday-based, but now they are all holiday-based, and I don't believe marvel did so in the past few years. Yup, there's a clearer image now and you're right, it's dark red arms. -

Are you 100% sure? It really looks like there's arm printing on the spidey. If not, are his arms red or dark blue? Because to me it looks like DB with red printing. You're right about okoye though, it's just weird lighting making it look like arm printing. It's the BP2 okoye holding the tesseract. -

Calendar leak! I was so excited for a split second because the image is so potato quality it almost looked like that was PS4 spidey coming out of the portal... just a christmas sweater, though. He appears to have arm-printing? Okoye looks to be wearing a sweater, I had thought the rumor was Black Widow wearing it. Can't tell which Cap and Iron Man are present, but if there are more figs and that's the 85 with the new helmet and Scale suit or AoU cap, I might have to pick it up. More details: Spidey appears to be attacking a small deer. JJJ was right all along. The fig I thought was okoye in a christmas sweater almost looks like it's wearing armor, rather than a sweater, and appears to have leg printing. I'm no longer sure it's okoye. There's a train with a dark blue (looks to be unprinted) microfig on it. All I can think of is that it's a very dark Cap 1 reference. The Invisible Man has made an inter-franchise appearance and is playing hockey on the lower right. -

This is looking like a must-buy for me. Christmas Sheev is hilarious, and there are some fairly desirable/expensive figures I've been looking for like the 212th trooper (I don't have access to those magazines since I live in the US), Omega, and Endor Leia. Not to mention that we're getting fig-scaled canon builds like the ewok glider and STAP, which I'm very pleased to see. -

Moon Knight: Moon weapon piece (The one that already exists as a samurai helm accessory from ninjago. The only new mold for him I'm hoping for is for his hood/wrap thing) Mr Knight: Truncheons Kang: power blast type parts in trans-light blue, maybe a 4x4 round platform like Frozone. She-Hulk: Suitcase, maybe a poster for her show or something. Werewolf by Night: claws Hawkeye: standard bow Kate: Hopefully lucky, but definately at least the standard bow. Echo: No clue. A weapon or something representing her powers, if she gets them in the show and it's not a spoiler. Wolverine: claws Beast: Not sure. I don't feel like lego's gonna give him claws, I'd say like a vial or something. Storm: lightning, I feel like we all agree on this. Agatha Harkness: some trans-purple pieces, maybe the darkhold. EDIT: As a quick aside, I finally got the 2021 Thanos bigfig today. (I buy bulk lots on ebay to sell individually on bricklink to fund my lego purchases, and I'll keep figs I want if they're not too expensive) The new bigfig system is a massive improvement. Just being able to turn the head alone is huge. It also allows for some very cursed figs since it shares that neck pin with the standard figure. I know I'm late to the party here, but I can't wait to get more of these. I do think the Hulk hesitency might be due to him needing 2 new molds for sure if they are to keep this system as it appears with the updated thanos bigfig in the a-force set. (The hair, of course, but his hairpiece would look pretty weird with the way the torso's set up now if you wanted to retain the head-turning feature. They'd need to make the fig hunch less or add a bit of space between the head and back so you could turn the head) -

First off, it's cool that you keep the discussion flowing and on-topic. It's weird when we have info gaps and there's no activity on the thread for days. Definately not buying the tenoo set. It's meant for kids, so that's not an indication of it's quality (though the price is not great), but I think you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone here who really gets the 4+ sets unless it's for their youngest children. (And completionists like @BrickBob Studpants who want new characters) -

No, but generally speaking, movies with absolutely horrible reviews don't make much money. (People like to use venom as a counterexample. Venom had mediocre revies, not absolutely horrible reviews like Indy 5) Exactly. How, in 2 years, does a playscale batmobile become $10 more expensive than a playscale tumbler? -

I don't mean to drag us even further off topic, but I will say I believe the mantis is 100% viable as a set: (The wing is a little short here, but nothing crazy, and it could be lengthened without disrupting the mechanism too much. -

What? Not any more new than the printing on a gray torso- that is a new torso, correct? Torsos and legs already have been molded in sand green, olive green, and dark green. I don't really get where you're getting this from. -

Totally agree with pretty much all of this. It's weird that we're getting so many Burton sets, and I also have mixed feelings on them nixing the flash tie-in aspect. As much as I hate how Miller's being treated more gently by people like Gunn for his actual multiple crimes than most actors are for tweeting something dumb, I do think you can separate art from artist- or in this case, actor from character- and still release the sets. But on the other hand, lego's been cancelling a lot of sets for controversy over the last few years, so I at least respect the consistency. (Though for the batwing thing, I really don't see how it resembles the one from the flash. It's not just that it's smaller, the shaping is different) Lego apparently dodged a bullet by not making Indy 5 sets (4/10 on IGN? HOW? They give everything a 7/10 or better. How do you manage to get a 4/10 from them?), but I think Flash sets would have sold quite well given how hyped-up this movie is by the reviewers, fans who saw it at screenings, and Tom Cruise. I'm still very annoyed about the Batmobile being almost $50. It's absurd to me. A batmobile alone shouldn't be more than $30-35 unless it's something like the Tumbler. -

We can double up and make a $20 set of the speeder from andor with 2 stormtroopers and 2 army troopers. I assume we'll only get 1-2 sets each for Andor S2, Acolyte, and Skeleton crew, and if one ends up being a mando-style breakout, we'll get more. BB S3 will be lucky to get a single set, given that we didn't get any for S2. We REALLY need a mantis, but like you, I'm not holding my breath. -

It's the color of the suit for me, I think this is the first mainline joker to not be wearing that dark purple shade for his suit (Aside from the one TDKR fig), and it does look pretty close in color to the TAS one. But the detailing is clearly significantly different, as you say. It's definately not meant to be a TAS suit, but I think the color is why people are saying it is. What really weirds me out is the reliance on Keaton specifically. Generally speaking, the TDK trilogy was more well-received, and it's not like the Burton films are any more kid-friendly. Is it just that the flash has him in it? -

I suppose because Iron Man fought thanos in that film and also the hulkbuster was in the movie? I don't get why people care about this, it's a 4+ set. Whatever lego says it's based on has no bearing on the quality. Would people have really preferred this if it was some random 4+ rubble and the iron man was just a MK50 reprint? -

They do, but they know how to get adult fans to buy 3 batman vs joker sets. We're only the clowns if we buy a $48 batmobile or a $27 juniors batmobile. (The batwing is reasonably priced IMO) -

Thank you! I should clarify, the ejection feature is to launch a spacetrooper. They're a legends stormtrooper suit meant for zero-g combat- essentially, they're built for fighting in space. -

My thoughts: 4+ set. It's fine. A solid 4+ set (Is this our first 4+ hulkbuster? I'm surprised it's been so long with how many they pump out.). I like the iron man fig. Venomized groot. I'm sorry, but this is just not for me. It feels like they're running out of ideas, we JUST HAD baby groot, and this is functionally the same build but black. I do like that you can fully venomize him, but overall this is a waste of a slot. Even if it had to be a statue type build... do rocket, or a carnage symbiote, or something. NWH set: I'm personally probably not going to get it, but I do like it. I think the head was a weird choice and they should have just done, like, part of the arm or torso, but I think the display looks very nice and dynamic. The figures are mostly really good, like both spideys, electro, and doc ock, but Goblin is subpar and Lizard should have been included instead of Ned or Dr. Strange. It feels like lego's actively trying to avoid making him. The "buildible sandman" is like 5 pieces too, they could have at least given it something. Endgame set: I absolutely hate this. It's some weird diorama thing, vastly inferior for to the compound I missed out on in 2021. This set is 30% more expensive, looks significantly worse, has less stuff, less interesting figs in general (Why isn't Ronin here?). This wave is really confusing to me. The venom groot and endgame sets are such mind-bogglingly stupid choices. It's nuts. -

I think it's hilarious that the three jokers are all SLIGHTLY different. If you're a completionist for figs, you have to get the juniors set for the slightly lighter suit color, and you have to get both the batwing and batmobile for the hat/hair. I'm torn on the 4+ batmobile set. On the one hand, it's the quintessential 4+ set. Batmobile, batman, joker, and they even gave an exclusive joker. On the other hand, since there are multiple sets around the same price with that same batman and a joker, why not just make a different villain? They had the budget for new prints... This is actually a super deep parallel to the "three jokers" storyline. But without a crowbar, we can't tell which one is the clown. -

This is 100% correct. The show is widely considered the best (on a critical level at least) SW product since the disney buyout, but it's not exactly by lego's target audience (The first scene takes place in a brothel for pete's sake.) That said, I could easily see a Fondor coming as a larger set that tries to lean into the adult market.
