Lord of the Rings Ongoing Discussion
Balrogofmorgoth replied to Momotof's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I mean technically even the Peter Jackson films are semi-canonical, or exist as their own individual canon, since they still deviate from the texts. Only the books are hard Tolkien canon unless they make a film or show that is an exact match which will never happen. But the same goes for any adaptation of any book. Which is one reason why (even though some aspects of the show bothered me a lot) I don’t let myself get so worked up about the aspects of Rings of Power that didn’t work. I’ll always have the books, so I can still enjoy the ride and then go back and read the real version -

A lot of people who have opinions on RoP don’t know that much about the lore, so I ignore most opinions. Some things about it were incredible and some things about it were terrible. It’s certainly not black and white. It’s not complete garbage like a lot of the internet would have you believe, but it’s also not completely good. Some aspects are great, some aspects truly are garbage. But that doesn’t make it one or the other as a whole. Speaking as someone who is about as far into Tolkien lore as you can get. -

It does get torn down at the end of the Second Age, except for the foundations since they were created with the help of the One Ring and couldn’t be destroyed unless the Ring was destroyed. Although it was most likely rebuilt much the same as it had been, if not stronger. But there’s really nothing that tells us for sure one way or another so they could easily use that as the in-universe explanation. But if we get a lego Barad-Dûr I would sincerely hope for the Peter Jackson film version regardless -

Nope it’s not legally able to be in the same continuity. There are already a lot of inconsistencies with the films as well, mostly in designs such as the Elven Rings and Narsil -

Well RoP isn’t in the same film continuity as the Jackson films so Barad-Dûr in RoP would look different anyway -

I don’t even know what to say to this. Barad-Dûr would be entirely different from Orthanc, they’re two completely different towers in two completely different places. One is indescribably larger than the other and has a very different design, not to mention a flaming eye since we’re talking about the movie version. As far as interior, it would give them some creative room to have fun with it, include easter eggs and make it interesting. But the exterior would certainly be the priority. I, for one, would love a massive Barad-Dûr D2C someday -

I’m not sure the last run of sets should even be taken much into account in a reboot. Ten years is a long time and lego designs have come a long way. The sets certainly hold up today, but there a lot of improvements that could be made for new versions of them, even for ones like Helm’s Deep and Bag End which are some of the stand outs from last time. I would prefer if things we didn’t get last time were prioritized but I think it’s very silly to say they don’t need to remake ten year old sets for a reboot -

Probably Funko Pop collectors who also like lego. Never been a fan of those myself -

I agree with this. And to me, the Brickheadz are still a good sign. We can only wait and see what they do with the IP but for now I’m glad to have official LOTR sets on shelves again, even if they’re only Brickheadz for now -

Yeah there’s absolutely no obligation to get them but there’s also no obligation not to. I still disagree that it sends that message. When LOTR BH outsell others, sure it may mean more LOTR BH but there’s absolutely no way it won’t also mean lego taking a closer look at the LOTR market. Plus BH may not be interesting to me, but LOTR BH are simply for being LOTR themed, so I don’t mind having them. And I do believe it will still send the message that there is a market for LOTR in general -

They would consider it a strength towards LOTR in general if they aren’t completely blind. And then test the waters with other types of sets I agree with all of this It’s also worth noting that boycotting the LOTR Brickheadz won’t help either. So might as well have them in the LOTR collection -

I disagree, it’s not that simple. I have seen a ton of people that don’t like Brickheadz say they’ll buy these just because they’re LOTR. So when the LOTR Brickheadz are selling a lot better than other Brickheadz, it’s clearly not because they’re Brickheadz, it’s because they’re LOTR. Lego is blind if they don’t see that -

Lego doesn’t leak information themselves, leaks happen when other sources get to it and reveal it before lego does. As for official reveals, lego typically doesn’t reveal D2C sets until VERY soon before release these days. I’m sure more information on the Rivendell set will leak via some other source during the next couple of months. As for future sets, there may very well not be any, which is why we’ve heard nothing. I agree that it would be a huge wasted opportunity if that were the case, but really we just don’t know yet. Maybe this is all 2023 is going to bring and we’ll see more in 2024. Maybe this really is all we’ll get at all. It’s not a great sign that no other LOTR 2023 information has been given via written leaks aside from what we already know about. Personally, I’m hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I just can’t allow my hopes to get too high at this point without more information. -

Problem is a GWP wouldn’t have more than one exclusive figure, especially not a licensed one. But I digress, it’s not going to happen anyway -

You know what would be spectacular? A GWP of Tolkien at his writing desk to go along with the Rivendell set -

I’m not into Brickheadz either, but the sooner we send the message for more LOTR the better. I also don’t think they look any worse than any other Brickheadz -

Battle packs would absolutely need to happen if we get an actual reboot. It’s too perfect, it’s like battle packs were made for LOTR -

So there was a rumored list going around for a LOTR wave three before it got cancelled back in 2014 and I think that rumored list would be almost perfect as the start to a reboot. -The Mirror of Galadriel -Amon Hen Ambush -Defence of Osgiliath -Witch King Showdown -Minas Tirith I think if I could add one set it would be the Bridge of Khazad-Dûm -

I also think relaunching the theme with a $500 set is already an interesting decision, and making it based on RoP wouldn’t be a good idea. There just wouldn’t be enough interest. If they did tie in sets it would have to be after they introduced LOTR through movie sets -

Rivendell isn’t established by Elrond until the War of the Elves and Sauron after Eregion is destroyed. BUT Rings of Power certainly doesn’t seem to care about canon timelines very much (I did actually enjoy the show a lot even though there’s a LOT wrong with it, it’s wonderful to be back in Middle-Earth). That said, I would be very surprised if Rings of Power sets happen, although the specific mention of the show on their official page is intriguing. I would hope for movie sets but I would never say no to them branching out. The fact that the Brickheadz are from the movies is also very telling. I like that they mention the books too -

The fact that a lot of the summer set numbers are known and no LOTR is to be found is a bad sign -

I think you nailed it here, the Hogwarts Express isn’t a bad set by any means but it’s very expensive for what it is and that’s the problem I have with it. I agree that the Hulkbuster and BP bust are just bad sets. I really hope follow that trend for this theme, although I think it would be hard to ruin a LOTR set for me, I will literally buy anything they put out for this theme Lord of the Rings™ Gifts and Toys Build and recreate iconic moments from Middle-earth with LEGO® Lord of the Rings™ sets.
