Lord of the Rings Ongoing Discussion
Balrogofmorgoth replied to Momotof's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I mean, those specific Easter eggs from Orthanc were from that extended scene in the movie…the “rods of the five wizards” are NOT in Orthanc in the book (or the movie, Saruman is being hyperbolic in the scene). It’s definitely a movie Easter egg, sorry. HOWEVER! The Harry Potter theme has proven that book Easter eggs are not only possible but pretty popular so I could see newer LOTR sets including Easter eggs specifically from the books -

But a lot of people seem to hate the Jurassic Park gate. Idk that I would call that set a success. Having Barad-Dûr with random scenes from other places just makes no sense and completely takes away from Barad-Dûr as its own fortress. Easter eggs are fine but completely designing the interior based off of entirely different locations is just crazy -

I disagree. For one thing, Sam and Frodo were never in a dungeon at all. They’re very clearly in the top of the tower in Cirith Ungol, accessing it through a trap door in the floor. Also, I don’t mind if they make a simple Easter egg of being able to capture Sam and Frodo and put them in a dungeon. But design a Barad-Dûr dungeon and don’t make it the interior of Cirith Ungol inside Barad-Dûr -

I don’t think that’s the same thing. Including minifigures that don’t necessarily fit the scene but still kinda make sense is something lego has always done and usually works pretty well, especially if it’s the only logical way to get certain figures. I’m all for Last Alliance figures, and I’m all for Frodo and Sam figures even though they are never anywhere near Barad-Dûr. I don’t even mind if they have their Orc disguises they get from Cirith Ungol. But I think including the interior of Cirith Ungol inside Barad-Dûr would just be wrong. There is plenty they could do for a Barad-Dûr interior. A dungeon is a no brainer. A throne room is a no brainer. An armory is a no brainer. I think a Palantír room is also essential but we’ll see if lego agrees. Aside from those, it could have a room that hold the nine Rings of Men, that the books tell us Sauron keeps. Maybe it could have a forge. Maybe a sort of barracks for the Orcs. Plenty of things that fit Barad-Dûr itself, I don’t see any reason to merge it with an entirely different interior location -

It would not be a good thing to include whole scenes inside Barad-Dûr that take place in a completely different location. Easter eggs are one thing. For example, having Frodo be captured in Barad-Dûr and pretending it’s Cirith Ungol would be stupid. But including the armory we briefly see in Minas Morgul would be fine -

I thought the same thing at first but it is those weird eyelashes… Yes! Armories for sure and that was specifically mentioned in the leak, you’re right -

Sam rescues Frodo from the tower of Cirith Ungol, not Barad-Dûr. We don’t know much about the interior of Barad-Dûr. But we know there’s a torture chamber (where Gollum was tortured), and we know there’s a room with a Palantir. I think it’s also safe to assume there’s a throne room and a dungeon. And they can always just throw in Easter eggs for the rest (and they probably won’t make a torture chamber) -

As of now, the only rumored figures for Barad-Dûr are Sauron, Sam, Frodo, and an unknown number of Orcs. Also, Rivendell had 15 figures, not counting statues. I don’t think statues really count since they aren’t characters -

I wouldn’t count on so many figures this time. I certainly wouldn’t expect more figures than Rivendell, which is more of a character driven set than this one. Personally I hope it just means the build was improved since the survey leak, since there was something to be desired in my opinion. I do hope there are more figures than the leak suggested, I just wouldn’t get my hopes up for too many based on price -

Didn’t happen to me with Rivendell but it’s happened to me a lot lately with other sets. I got customer service to not only replace the parts but give me a bunch of vip points for the trouble. Just email and ask -

New films are in the works, but there’s nothing that hints at a trilogy of any kind right now -

What are you even talking about? You know adults collect regular playsets, right? Not just 18+ sets? I’m saying I believe LOTR has enough appeal to all ages to do well as a normal theme. -

But the quality on those figures is horrendous and they look abysmal in person A) that was ten years ago. I think the fan base has grown exponentially since then, and the younger fans have grown up and had kids that they indoctrinate B) no one knows for sure what happened last time. The poor reception of The Hobbit coming out and most of the sets being based on that probably had a lot to do with it and lego said “well I guess middle-earth doesn’t sell” not taking into consideration that maybe it’s just The Hobbit that doesn’t sell. And even that I think has grown a little more positive in people’s minds in general than when it came out C) RoP coming out and being largely received poorly gives people a lot of nostalgia for the Jackson trilogy. Note the difference between this, and the previous argument. Now there wouldn’t be three waves of RoP sets taking priority in the LOTR line the way The Hobbit sets did back then. I know for a fact that my kids would crazy over LOTR sets. And I know a lot of other families whose kids would do the same I don’t think it’s too late at all. I think now is a better time for it than it was then. The fanbase is so much bigger now -

I’m not sure it would sell quite as well but I do think people are vastly underplaying how popular it is. I think it would sell almost as well. I’m really not sure why people don’t think kids would like it. -

Why do people have to drop random vague clues and give us hope. “They have plans” could mean literally anything, let’s not get ahead of ourselves AS MUCH AS I WANT TO One of the most popular IPs in the world though, it’s not terribly far-fetched. I still think full waves of playsets would do very well right now. And I’ll say it again. Battlepacks. Were. Made. For. LOTR. It’s a perfect fit -

Technically it’s not a remake since it’s based on the first design of Hagrid’s Hut whereas the 2019 set is based on the second design from PoA onwards. So I guess you could get around your rule? -

Yup. And of everything was actual minifig scale, it would just be outrageously expensive (more than it already is) and most things would be outrageously big. Scaling down is just part of lego, which also means not having 100% screen accuracy. However, going back to grey roofs is a great start!! -

Sorry but are you new to lego? How often are sets scaled to have exactly the amount of characters in a specific space? Do you think we can fit as many minifigs in lego Hogwarts as you can in the movies with real people? Everything is scaled down by the nature of the toy. That’s how it has literally always been. -

Obviously getting the more important figures is priority, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if we got generic members of each race to populate the builds. It feels more genuine that way
