TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
Hrw-Amen replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Glass for train door windows? I am wondering if anyone can help me here? I have of late been building some small green twin axle passenger coaches to go with one of my turn of the century (19th/20th.) engines and I have been using the nice green train doors, (Bricklink parts 4181/4182.) which make building them so much easier. However I cannot find out what type of glass those doors take, it seems to have two little notches for fittings on the top and bottom from what I can see on the doors. Now it is not a huge problem and does not overly detract from the MOCs but I would like to include the glass in the doors if possible so if someone can give me the Bricklink part number for it that would be great. I will post pictures soon, but I am just finishing the brake van first. I plan to make some larger bogied versions once there are finished as I like the look of green carriages as they remind me of those that used to run near where I live on the Southern Railways years ago. I have to say that I understood these small twin and tripple axle coaches were phased out by the time of the second world war, but talking to my mother last week she assured me they were still used in the late 1950's to early 1960's on the branch line that ran behind her house where I grew up and she can recall travelling in them on occasion. Still, I waffle. If anyone has the part no's for the glass I would appreciate it. Thanks.- 578 replies

Nice house it will be good to see it built in bricks.

Very good, a nice example of a smaller steam train and good to see that it pulls all of those coaches without any problems.

Looks good! Surely though it can never be finished can it, one thing I've found with model railways is that they never really finished and there is always some little thing that you add or change slightly. But it is a very nice layout, I wish I had the room for something similar.

LEGO Collectable Minifgures Series 8 Rumours & Discussion
Hrw-Amen replied to Piranha's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Anyone from the South West of England (Dorset.)found any yet? I have been looking and have searched again this morning all Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury, ASDA, WH Smith & Toymaster as well as a couple of independent toy stores in our area and no-body I could find had them. I asked in a few of the quieter stores and they said that they have been ordered but they have not arrived. Even the ones that said they had LEGO delivered last week but that the S8 Mini-figs were not in the order. Just wondering if they have a shortage or not as it seems odd for nobody at all to have them in stock yet? -
That does look remarkably like the real one. I hope that your father likes it and has a good birthday. Is he also a fan of LEGO?

It is nice to see an example based on a real tram. I have been thinking about a tram for a while, but more older style. Maybe though a modern one is more practical and easier to get the bricks for? I had not considered that before so thanks for the idea.

REVIEW: 8833 LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 8
Hrw-Amen replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Has anyone in the South West of England managed to get any of series 8 in an actual High Street shop or Supermarket? I have been around all the toy selling stores, WH Smith's and ASDA, Morrisons & Tesco's within a ten mile radius of where I live and not one has series 8? They all say they have ordered them but non have turned up yet? Is there a shortage? -
What's the least important aspect of you of Lego?
Hrw-Amen replied to BrickG's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I guess I would have to say the packaging. Of course I want it to reach me safe and undamaged but I do not have any space to keep countless cardboard boxes even if they are flattened down and in the loft. -
Looks just like the railway bridge down the road from where I live. Lorries are always getting stuck under it and buses.
-
That looks pretty good, I'd like to see it alongside some WWII troops.

Is that two dark green 1X1 plates at the rear of the MF tomb stone? That could be very useful for people wanting to model old BR locomotives or anything in British racing green as they seem to be hard to come by?

LEGO Collectable Minifgures Series 9 Rumours & Discussion

Although if anyone from TLG is reading these threads I think a Baby Sitter with baby would be a really good figure to include in an upcoming set. -

Build your own Pirate LEGO Animal Battle Pack - FAQ
Hrw-Amen replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
What about a Mermaid / Man? I guess that is half Mini-fig but also sort of animal, I assume it would be a 5 point one. I'd also like to see a large Kraken but I assume that for it to be size effective and realistic it would have to be its own set, a bit like the new LOtR Shelob creature size and complexity. Thinking of ports where pirates operate either around or from, yes a tiger would fit well, but so would so many other Asian/African large animals like an elephant, Rhino etc so it could almost double as a safari battle pack. But yes I second Tiger. And Jellyfish. -
This is very cute, but I have to agree that maybe the station should be a bit further away and not right up against the track. I think some of my trains would also get stuck. Having said that it has very nice details and the platform design is very nice.

Really good, looks just like the real thing. Great design for old style TV, but I am not sure it will fit in that bin!

I would imagine it is ideal that the head and hat/hair move together as they do on real people, I mean if you turn your head your hair does not stay in the original alignment. (I hope?) Having said that, although it maybe what is desired I have a mixture and as has been said it really depends on the type of plastic and how tight the fit is. So whilst I may want them to turn together they do not always do it. Annoying, but I would not really say it was an issue. Saying that it appears from your question that you want the opposite is that right?

May have to have a go at this myself as I do have quite a bit of blue track from my youth. Just out of interest does it actually make any difference to the running of the train as to if those 1X4 tiles (The ones held in place by the rod/clip arrangement.)are in place or not? Or is it just for cosmetic purposes?

I never use LDD, I have tried it but find it really awkward and cumbersome, I prefer to go for the real bricks to try things out, also that way I can make sure I actually do have them. I also build quite a few railway models and also go through pictures on line or in my books to get an idea of what I want to make. I try to pick on a loco that look as though I will stand a good chance of being able to make it. I am not against ordering bits specifically for a MOC and will often do this either as it progresses or beforehand if I have an idea brewing and know I'll need A, b & C to accomplish it. I like to be fairly tidy though and although it is almost impossible to prevent a desk covered in bits I have mine organised in little draws and containers, knowing pretty much what I have in each (Although most I can see inside as they are transparent.)taking out only what I want and when. I find being organised helps an awful lot. Generally though I feel that just sitting down with a pile of bricks and no ideas will lead to nothing but a wasted few hours. I need to have at least some idea of what I am doing before I start.

That was a lot quicker than I expected it to be. I have to say it seems like something I would like, (I did support it.) and I think being designed by someone who worked on the project itself is even better. Could be good publicity for both LEGO and NASA here. Hopefully by the time the review process has been gone through and a model produced (Assuming it is of course?) there will be some good, interesting science from the rover to be released. Maybe a times release to coincide with some of the science publications would help sales and interest? I am pretty sure I will buy it anyway as long as it is not ridiculously priced.

Ebay seller gets busted for switching price labels
Hrw-Amen replied to lightningtiger's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Where I shop they have an assistant who looks after 8 self service checkouts. If something goes wrong like weight or something they are too busy to check, they just wave the card/key thingy or punch in a code and you carry on, they don't bother checking your bags or they would have people queuing all around the store. But I see that if you were there on a quiet day/time it could be a problem. Not that we should be encouraging this sort of behavior at all!! -
I have updated this engine now following some helpful comments and tips from members to improved performance. The tender has been rebuilt as a powered one whereas the loco is now free running. It goes an awful lot better. Sometimes getting skidding on sharp points and curves but no derailments. This seems to be a case of traction rather than a lack of power though. Maybe some better tires would sort it out? Link to flickr gallery:

During my childhood days we had a layout that was 'N' Gauge in the attic at my parents house. We had quite a few steam tender locos and there were just as many that were powered by the tender as by the engine itself. So it is not that uncommon in the model train world to power tenders for these trains, or at least it was not 25-30 years ago. I will check out the review page you mentioned to see if it will help me with my choice. At the moment I seem to have a wide variety of powered trains though, so it may come down to lining them up against one another and seeing which actually performs best.

What do you do with LEGO set boxes?
Hrw-Amen replied to Robominer's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I have saved one or two from sets I really like, mostly things like Emerald Night or the Maersk train. These I use at the moment to store my instructions in. Most of the ordinary ones though I just recycle as there simply is not room to keep them even in the attic. My older instructions from many years ago were just stuck in a carrier bag in the attic but have now been sorted into these few boxes. They may end up back in the attic soon though now they are sorted, just in the boxes instead.
