MOC: Irish Rail Mark IV Locomotives & Carriages
Hrw-Amen replied to Dfenz's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Very nice train, nice colours as well and good lines. -
That is good, the ADU really need some more flying shipd rather than just ground based stuff. How many ADU troopers can you fit into the cargo area?
-
Looking really good there. It is nice to have some close ups of the wheels an rods as they are something I usually struggle with on steam engines.

Just a thought I had, over the weekend I have got 5 X old blue motors from my mothers attic and after de-fluffing and cleaning have got them running albeit a bit squeaky. hen they have been sat in a box for the last 25 y or so doing nothing and were 20 years old or there about prior to going into the box. I had an idea whilst thinking about rebuilding some of those very old trains. Is there any reason why a power functions IR unit would not work with them? OK, I know the connections totally different but I figured that would be easy to fix by cutting a PF extension cable in half and adding some 4.5V connectors to the naked wires. I understand that 4.5V is only half of the PF 9V so I guess that they maybe slower, but figured that the seed control probably worked by varying the amount of power the motor gets anyway. So has anyone tried this, does it work or is this idea way to simplistic and there is something else the PF IR unit needs that a 4.5V battery box just won't provide?

I do like the look of the ship overall, but not sure that my Blacktron guys would go for orange? Maybe they would who knows they are a few girls amongst them so maybe it would be fashionable under a new colour scheme for them? Good build though.

What do you do with your sets/MOC once you've built them?
Hrw-Amen replied to hellopike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
If it is something I took a long time over initially I tend to leave it made up. I have many old space sets that are still made up and some space stuff, (Blacktron / Ice Planet etc.) from around 25 years ago before my dark age. Even though they went into storage during my dark age I could not take them apart. I now have MOCS of modular buildings and railway stuff, some it has taken me months to make so I have no plans on taking those apart. I tend to just order parts from Bricklink or the Shop at home PAB if I need duplicate bits rather than robbing a MOC that took me months to make. I find it much better to just wait the couple of days those bits will take to arrive in the post rather than destroy all that work. Sometimes that means waiting long enough until I am paid to make an order worth while, but at worst that usually only a couple of weeks so nothing in the greater scheme of things. I do have sets that are too big to have display space. Usually I know that though in advance and have bought them simply to complete a series. These tend to get left in the box though until I get a bigger house one day. -
Opening sealed antique sets - wonderful or painful ?
Hrw-Amen replied to drdavewatford's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I have a couple of larger sets I have not built yet, the Earth Defence HQ, CITY Airport to name some. I have these, (Well the AC one.) to complete the set, but being quite big I don't have anywhere to display it long term and I don't really want it getting knocked about and dusty. I also have a couple of CITY trucks from this years release not yet made. This is more of a case of knowing that there is something to look forwards to. With the smaller and mid range stuff I tend to buy one and make one, leaving two or three still to do for the anticipation value. It means I still get to build them but always know there is another one waiting. There are a couple of larger sets I'd like and want to get before they are discontinued but it is having the room for them so they may get bought but then mothballed until I have a house that is large enough. Maybe I will one day? -
I have over the last couple of days put together a small Blacktron I flyer, complete with folding wings and engine. They have to fold for it to fit into a larger MOC I am just finishing off which I will post once done. Anyway, it took a while to work out the wing configuration to get them fold and sit neatly, but I think I have got it now and also in suitable original Blacktron Black/Yellow and Trans Neon Yellow. Here is a link to flickr. (I hope?) http://www.flickr.com/photos/hrw-amen/7385298692/in/photostream edit:- OK the Brickshelf gallery is up:- http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=501092

That is quite nice with some of those older buildings and vehicles. Are you planning to add more tables or is space limited? Anyway, whatever you do to progress this keep us up to date with photos.

Very nice indeed. Not really one for electric overhead power myself, but I would certainly buy one of these.

Re-boxed Lego Sets sold as bootlegs...
Hrw-Amen replied to 88high's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Why would someone buy a LEGO set, take it out of its box and put it in another one only to sell it at a lower price, that does not make sense; at least not unless there is a very wealthy person with too much time on their hands and a liking for Lego fans! Surely it is more than not likely to be a cheap copy? -
I much prefer it. This way it is easy for me to take the bag I want, the booklet I want and build one bit one day, then leave another section for another day, or I can build one thing, my wife the other. We don't have a huge amount of projects to build so being able to divide them up over a few short sessions makes for more and easier fun.

You could put a little trap in the roof of the shed on a hinge above the track so that there is just enough room to stick your finger in and switch off the train, then shut the trap back down again. Nice idea though, would like an engine shed myself.
-
Is this just a stand alone set up? Not that it takes anything away from the fantastic creation, but I would love to see some shots of the whole layout with the trains running. That would be wonderful.

Annoyingly living in an Olympic venue, (Not in London.) my local toy store has said they will not be stocking them as there will not be enough call for them, in spite of the fact that when I asked today the sales assistant told me they have had loads of people asking when they will get them in? Hopefully some of the local supermarkets will have them in though.

Well, after getting all the sets I think my favourite is the alien UFO, (The one beaming up the farmer.) The mother-ship was a bit rubbish as the whole point of a mother-ship is that it is a mother to other ships and none of the alien vessels could connect to it. The Earth Defence HQ is the best ADU set though. I did really like the alien minifigs and wish we had more of them and also the ADU troopers. With the Pink Space Girl, Galaxy Patrol and ADU the human space faction now has some pretty good up to date troopers of one kind or another. What is needed is a good mix of aliens as well.

MOCs: Pennsylvania RR K4s Class Steam Locomotives #3750 & #1361
Hrw-Amen replied to Cale's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Nice to see a couple of good sized steam engines like these especially as a pair, often (Including myself.) you only get to see one. -
Suddenly losing all interest in a whole theme?
Hrw-Amen replied to purpleparadox's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Can't really say I am a fan of any licenced themes. I am hoping lotr will be the first but I need to see the sets first. For me traditional LEGO Space themes and City/Trains are hat do it. I do glance at licences but only to see what bits are in them. Have bought Toy Story Army Men sets a few times but only to get bits for soldiers for City MOCs. -
LDD MOC: Horse Drawn Street Car Trolley
Hrw-Amen replied to Brickstarrunner's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Interesting idea, I guess a lot of original railways were horse drawn or at least donkey/pony drawn for bring up stuff from mines and so on. Could easily be turned into a castle or medieval train MOC I imagine. Just looking at the pictures of the real horse drawn trolley I see they have several points/switches, I am wondering how they change those, do they have a chap jump off and run a head to change direction or is it all down to which way the horse pulls the carriage? -
Looks like something everyones mum should be nipping about on in about thirty years or so from now!
-
Yes, very funny, made me laugh, looks good.
-
Not a big fan of LEGO Mecha for some reason they seldom stir any emotion in me when made from LEGO; however I am a big fan of LEGO Steam Punk and as such this is a wonderful build, much more punk than mecha! Very evocative of the theme, looks like some giant hot water boiler on legs, with lots of pipes, arms and ice cream steam! Fantastic!

OK, it has probably bean mentioned before and talked about but I cannot find the thread and my eyes are tired of searching lines of entries. Simple question, anyone know if motor 88002 (The normal train PF motor.) has any issues using the large train wheels of the type that come with the EN or Toy Story train. I mean obviously you can fit them to it with a technic axle, but does using these bigger wheels place any undue stress or anything unhealthy on the motor? Or does it just not look good, or has no-one really ever done it, or do we just not know? I am just thinking through some simple ideas for shunters and wanted a fairly easy way of powering it. Also thinking about a really old style engine of the type with two really big wheels and some little ones. I may go for diesel yet, I am undecided but thought I'd seek advice first as it may give me some direction. Thanks for any advice.

Least appropriate place TLG has placed a flickfire missile.
Hrw-Amen replied to TeufelHund's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Perhaps I am missing something with the flickfire missiles. I never seem to be able to get them to flick that easily without causing damage to my finger nails and even when they do they only go about ten centimetres. If they had been around when I was a kid I would of soon tired of them as they just have no play/fun factor whatsoever that I can see? But maybe I am flicking them wrong?
