I've had several posters comment on how topics aren't worthy of a thread, yet I search for similar threads and can't find any? Am I breaking some unwritten rule? I genuinely want to be a better poster, and I know I must be missing something. Please take pity on a forum N00b and show me the ropes. I'm primarily on a sic-fi kick right now, so most of my posting has been in that forum. I'm an AFOL that is just learning about other AFOLs. Help me out here. I'm used to posting on a completely different type of forum, so if I need to change my style to suit this one, let me know.

The bionicle system just struck me as being more one track and not as versatile as SYSTEM. I haven't paid much attention to HERO factory, as it struck me as just bionicle redux. what am i missing?

How would I compile these topics together then? I searched and did not see threads dealing with these specific questions. I've just been up late lately and wonder these things, to ground myself. I don't mean to violate forum rules, perhaps someone could give me a primer? I'm used to a very different forum, so forgive me if my style is not consistent to what is the norm here.

Yea, I usually don't build very articulated mecha, mine are more along the lines of those from Spyrius. And I refuse to use most of the bionicle parts, because I had a strong dislike for that theme. Despite the ease of building mecha from the parts, it struck me as an unsettling departure from "true" LEGO bricks, and that is a road I don't want to go down.

Sorry, I can't post polls yet. I'll get there someday. So what do you begin with usually, if you do start with a certain aspect? Cockpit? Weaponry? vehicle base? just a general skeleton? Or do you just start building whatever strikes your fancy and go from there? Do you grab a bunch of pieces and then try putting them together, or do you just pick as you go?
-
I know what you mean. sometimes you just get, "In The zone" and every piece you pick up seems to be what you need. Everything seems to come together and soon you are looking at an awesome MOC. When I get in the zone I do some of my best work.

I miss Blacktron,Space Police,Ice Planet and Spyrius

What did people think was so poorly designed about exploriens? The fact that some sets tended to fall apart easier than others? I, for one, loved the color scheme and the look. It had that great feel of classic space. -
I really only reply to MOCs that have some common interest in. That, or ones that really catch my eye, even if they are outside of my comfort zone. I'm primarily on an early 90s style space kick, so I usually only comment on models with that same feel, because I feel I can give the best comments to those and really think about them.

I am currently working on military wing of ice planet 2002. I has always been one of my favorite themes. That, along with the exploriens (working on their military wing as well) just really look grand. It helps that the pieces I have the most of fit in with their color scheme too. I guess the IP 2002 faction got tired of waiting for the Space Police to show up. They had to take matters into their own hands. -
I was hoping for a blacktron rehash with the release if the blactron minifig (such a great fig, with the robo arm and the space age peg leg.) I'm not sure what colors they would go with this time. The trans color seems to be the variable here, from the trans red of SP1 to the trans Dark green of SP2 to the trans dark blue of SP 3 I kind of hope they stay with the trans-neon green for blacktron3 if it happens. It looked great! Wishful thinking I'm sure

I like it. I really don't build too many mecha, but I may start. The articulated legs are the hardest part to build, I find.

I suppose a great deal of what determines which colors you use is based on the colors you have, which is determined by what sets you purchased a lot of. My collection is comprised primarily of black, then white, then blue. But I have a ton of Lego I haven't begun to sort through yet. I think the next major color additions I begin to acquire will be one of the greys (I'm leaning towards dark grey) and red. God I love bricklink

well, I do shift work so my schedule is all over the place, but I find when i am coming off of nights and stay up all day my mind gets fervent and I get in the zone, sometimes till the wee hours of the morning. It really all depends on my schedule though.

@Aanchir I don't see how the detachable and interchangeable cockpit design would get old, at least not in the longevity of one set. Blacktron II had several vehicles with interchangeable cockpits, IIRC. I'm actually working on an interchangeable cockpit design right now. a simple design that connects and disconnects easily can be a big plus. IMHO

Sci-fi builders, do you prefer angles or curves
fr33manator replied to fr33manator's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Right, once you have a bubble canopy, that's it. I absolutely love the old octagonal canopies with the studs on top. so many great possibilities. I had to go buy a bunch off Bricklink for the faction I am working on. -
I think a fair amount of my criticism is that the color scheme feels too jumbled to feel "natural". Military vehicles tend to have a more concise color scheme, at least when I build them. I have a hunch that TLG was trying to use up some leftover obscure colors from power miners, toy story, and some others that utilized them. perhaps the set will grow on me. I know Power Miners did.

Do you have a certain frame of mind? A time of day/night? Certain conditions?
