Very impressive. I like the organic feel of the city, it could be in the sky or on the water even The colors and buildings look very nice, for some reason I want to see some trans-dark-blue but maybe I'm just thirsty! I like that you haven't cluttered it up with too many buildings and yet it doesn't look barren.
  2. I use brick separator(s), very long tweezers (8-12") with the tips covered in vinyl and padded, toddler toothbrush, soft cotton cloth, technic pin tool, grabber tool, razor blade. tweezers - i use for getting into tight spots and for turning minifig heads without disturbing other items toothbrush - for cleaning parts. i use the toddler one because is is VERY soft and wont scratch (except maybe on chrome) and the head is small to get into smaller areas like inside arches and whatnot. cotton cloth - for wiping light dust off and for getting fingerprints off tiles without scratching technic pin tool - a built too for assisting with getting technic pins out and good for pushing down small parts in corners and hard to reach areas grabber tool - for picking up parts off the floor without having to reach down and risk bumping the table and tossing many more parts to the floor razor blade - for cutting I will have to give that a try. I have been having trouble getting jumpers off from the middle of a plate or large brick (easy when it's on the edge of course).
  3. My goal was to create something for my office that I could change fairly often and would be interesting to look at - I came up with this idea of a modular (not sure if that's the right term) calendar. The bottom scene is held in by the modified 1x2 plates that looks like a railing, so it actually pops out and I can pop an new scene in. The idea is that I'll create a new scene for each month and of course spell the month (or abbreviate it) at the top. The numbers for the dates are color-coded but I might do custom printed labels on 1x2 tiles - still undecided on if I want to keep it "purist" or not. What do you all think? Larger Photos @ FLickr Update for AUGUST
  4. I really like the look of this project. The colors/patterns look great and I especially like those statues used as structural supports. It all looks very nice.
  5. The camera was tilted, there is a tilt to the vignette (easiest to see if you compare the right edge of the model to the right edge of the frame. I'm just picky, if it doesn't bother you then it's not a big deal
  6. I like the scene Chuck is all-powerful! Don't care for the tilt or the color-cast.
  7. I'm interested in participating when this happens. Definately will need the set rules like Daniel's Dad posted about. Probably don't want to post the conf number in the thread though since it has to/from address and city info - not sure if that is OK or not here.
  8. Sometimes the Admin reindexes the database to speed things up. This takes 15-30 minutes and isn't done at the standard time (which is for backups).
  9. It's minifig snowshoe in brown.
  10. I had originally built this as a project for SpringCon, a small show in St.Paul MN - TwinLUG did a western theme this year and this was my entry in the display. Since I put so much work/time into it, I thought I might take it to Brickworld for display before tearing it down. These photos were taken at Brickworld and this weekend everything will come apart. It seems small but is the biggest MOC i've done so far at 80x80 studs. The idea is that this is a Native American (aka Indian) Lacrosse tournament after the European settlers (aka Americans) created some rules and set it up as a money-making game. Anyway, hope you like it. The closeup photos are on Flickr
  11. What a great MOC. The Lovegoods are two of my fav characters from the series and you did a super job on the house and on Xeno minifig (LOVE IT). I can't even think of anything that could be improved - except send it to me. Hahahaha.
  12. Hi Abbie, nice to see you here. Once I got past the 10 posts everything here worked like a charm! Was great meeting you at brickworld and seeing your great creations in the seller room there too. - Lisa
  13. thanks for the warm welcome :) I am actually planning on using the track from Alien Conquest for my narrow gauge curves. I will go with the old Lego rc or the memodels track for straights.
  14. This is great news (except I wish I had waited and not paid $10 for the game). Real life got in the way and before I did more then install (and update, and update, and update), ran through some of the training in that first big main room - next thing I know my trial month was over. I look forward to playing for free on my time and not have to worry about trying to get my $10/mo of playtime out of it. Games should be fun, not stressful.
  15. I took lots of pictures of the Futurama display at Brickworld. It was in my and my husband's top 5 displays of the show! I don't have any photos online yet though.
  16. I use to think there were a lot of "useless" parts, but now I'm not so sure. I see so much great parts usage in various MOC projects at Brickworld and on Flickr, I'm afraid to sell anything anymore. When I first got back to building, I thought "all technic parts are useless to me, I build city and castle"....then I had to dig out my Technic bits to build a custom horse-drawn carriage hitch. I thought all Bionicle parts were dumb and useless... and then I saw some amazing non-mech stuff where Bionicle parts are used on buildings and layouts as accent pieces or part of a vehicle. Amazing! (sorry, I don't have any links to these). The last thing was that figured i'll never use any gears - but I was wrong again! Now I'm working on something that will probably use many tiny gears, and a couple months ago I found a use building microscale for some "useless" flexible tubing (the smooth kind). So for now I have to say that nothing is useless, just that perhaps I have not yet found a use for it yet.
  17. Hi, I'm Lisa. Ever since I was a child I have been facinated by trains. I had a decent (for a kid) HO layout that I built myself (table, scenery, track laying, buildings, everything - even painted the people) when I was young. When I got back into LEGO in 2010, I told myself (and my husband) that I would not get into trains. It is expensive and takes up so much space. Then I saw a blurry leaked image of the Maersk train. Even before the train was available for purchase, I started buying up 9v track when it would show up on Bricklink at an affordable price. As soon as the train showed up on the Lego website I ordered it. Now I have my first Lego train layout, with some buildings and simple track. I don't have much and not sure that I am going to work on a more "permanent" display or not. I really don't want to get any larger because I need the space for other things (though I did get the largest bedroom in the house for my Lego room). I do want to create a custom train (not just an engine) but I am not ready for that yet. My current challenge is that I want to create a motorized narrow gauge, so that should be fun.

  23. It was my first year also. It was a lot of fun and my non-afol husband even asked for full registration next year (he had light this year). During public hours I mostly hid in the hotel room or went to the Lego store - those crowds of kids are just too much for me. The after hours stuff was a lot of fun and next year I plan on being more prepared (RED BULL) and awake longer during the whole thing. I really enjoyed the classes and presentations I attended and my only complaint is that I had to choose them and couldn't be at everything! Hopefully they will have some of the same seminars next year and I can do the ones I missed this year. I wish I had participated in some contests but I missed out on them just because I wasn't sure what to expect/what to do - not a fault of the show, just my own ineptness there. Haha. Everyone involved with the show was very helpful and friendly when I came up to them to ask anything. Even when it got stressful, seemed like everyone was in a good mood. I'm already planning my project for next year and hope I can bring something people will remember. Next year I need to be sure and bring more money to spend!!!
