BlackStar: I found my build of the inside of Emmet's apartment: #__movie emmets apartment interior by Xon 67, on Flickr While I was digging through my archive of old builds, I also found this--something I worked on about a year ago... #__sea cow by Xon 67, on Flickr While there are some great shots of the Sea Cow in the movie, it's hard to find good references closer down to the waterline. If anyone has any and would like to send me some, I'd be happy to continue building! :-)

BlackStar: Those slopes stopped me cold until I looked at enough frame grabs to convince myself that the slopes were three studs deep. Than I spent more time combing the parts library looking for the appropriate piece. When I found it, I about did a backflip, I was so excited I found it. That's one of the things I enjoy about re-creating these builds--figuring out the designer's thought processes and identifying the pieces and techniques they use. Like you said, when you get time, build some more and re-post. We can keep passing it back and forth. Terrasher: Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it. While work continues on other builds, I thought I'd give a peek at how I pieced the Green Grocer together into what was shown in the movie. As I said previously, I first created a 4-story Green Grocer and mirrored it left-to-right. Then I sliced off pieces to create additional parts of the building. I also created a type of armature to work out the angles between the various pieces (shown in the picture below) using bricks arranged in the dimensions of the major pieces of the building. This allowed me to move large assemblies of bricks more easily into place by having them "snap" onto pieces of the armature (while also helping to identify collisions between bricks so they could be removed). Without the armature, I found that LDD would try to align bricks on its own in ways that I didn't intend (at strange angles and incorrect levels). _movie green grocer assemble by Xon 67, on Flickr

Hi BlackStar, There are only a few more buildings left in Emmet's neighborhood for me to recreate at this point. I have an interior of Emmet's apartment and a mostly-completed Batwing: However, multiple versions of each have already been posted by others, so I didn't feel I needed to post mine. I've been thinking about a few more builds from the construction site and possibly the downtown area. I actually have screengrabs in preparation for creating for Emmet's Mech. I thought it would be cool to build from the time I saw it in the movie. But as you mentioned, it's all built sideways with SNOT techniques. It's definitely a more complex design. The videogame intructions are for the smaller version and don't help. Should we each work on ours at the same time and share notes? We might get further a lot faster that way. We each might get stuck at different places and can help each other out--or you could work on an arm while I work on a leg. What are your thoughts?

Thanks again for everyone's comments! I'm using Bluerender, available through a link in these forums. I think it would be cool to be able to put these all together, but I don't have the computing power to do that right now. Here's the reverse angle of the "Mega Green Grocer." Again, I think I have the details close to what's on screen, but not having clear views, it took a little guesswork: #__movie green grocer 2 by Xon 67, on Flickr

Lego Dino 500: It would be awesome to build these for real, but even if I could raise the cash, I don't know where I'd find space for all of them. Actor Builder: Calendar-wise, it took a couple of weeks. I don't keep track of the actual time each one of these take. I'm usually working on several of them at once, each at various stages. Also, I can sometimes spend more time tracking down references than I spend on the actual build itself. This one was trickier than most and took a good amount of time to figure out some of the details and get everything to fit together. The outside works well. However, while I tried to keep as much of the interior intact as I could, in the end there were too many collisions. I had to remove a good amount of the bricks. My digital version would require some structural re-work to physically build. From a part count perspective, this one has almost 3 times the number of parts as the Green Grocer set. If it were built only from full sets and not loose parts, it could take upwards of 9 Green Grocers to build. That might be more than a Kickstarter campaign would support... :-P

Someone on this movie really liked the Green Grocer. As far as I can tell, parts of this set were used more than any other in creating buildings in Bricksburg. Originally when I started on this block of the neighborhood, I thought it consisted of three buildings. Then I realized it was one great big building. To build it, I started with the Green Grocer and duplicated the second floor to make it a four story building. Then I mirrored it left-to-right giving two buildings, which I then sliced up and pieced back together at odd intersecting angles. I had to fill in more details on this building than others, since we never get a really good look at it from all sides. But overall, it's pretty close to what we saw in the movie. Reverse angle coming soon... _movie green grocer_ by Xon 67, on Flickr

Actor Builder--I have the "Pig Cart Thingy" lower down on my list. It would be humorous to do, but I'm not sure how well I could do that one. Always love a good mash up, especially one as well executed as this--sillyness and all... I'm curious, do Atlantis sharks come with lasers? -
Once again, we're thinking alike. I've started on the chopper, but ran into the same issue you did--not enough clear images of it--especially of the back. WorgRider has created a really good version and posted a wireframe render on Brickshelf: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=6286856 It might help me to finish mine at some point...

Interesting that you should ask... My next post includes the entire end of a block. The bigger scenes can be a bit challenging on the laptop I'm using, but it's managing. Also, now that I have every building completed on the same side of the street as Emmet's apartment building, I want to render a shot of that. You also get the "most humorous posts" award, starting with your previous Batman quote. (But, sorry--you don't win a kewpie doll with this post's answer!) Keep everyone's comments comin'! Lemmie know what else you want to see.

Yup! I have a large number of frame grabs that I've taken from the movie. Every time I start a new building, I make sure I have grabs from all of the shots that contains that building. I also use the behind-the-scenes extras as reference. At times, if I can't get a particular view I'm looking for, I go to youtube postings from the video game. Often, there are differences between all of these sources. I use the movie as the primary source and fill in what's needed using the others. Occationally, there are details where I just can't get a clear enough view. For example, on the opposite side of the fence next to the gas station there's what looks like a pallet containing a stack of poles wrapped in chains. But I can't identify enough of the parts that were used to make it. So for now, I'm leaving it out. (Hint: Can you tell what my next render will include?) Sometimes I run across another frame at a later time that I originally missed. Maybe that will happen here... More coming soon...
