Pythagoras, again - angle tool
doug72 replied to usbdevice's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Is there version for Mac users? -
I e-mail PV productions earlier this evening as I too was having trouble following LDD instructions and by return I recieved the HD PDF download which includes detailed instructions on how to set the various levers & gears to get the timings correct. The earlier downloads did not include the HD PDF.

Santa needs help
doug72 replied to Luvalot's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have just contacted PV productions as the original download did not include the PDF instructions. Had a very quick reply and the HD PDF instructions were e-mailed to me and now downloaded. These are much easier to follow than the LDD files and include instructions how to set up the timing of various levers and axles etc. -

The 36T gear meshes without off-set at a 4L spacing of axles giving a nice 36:1 reduction.- 5,507 replies

Although the new worm is not yet available I have been experimenting with ways to use it with worm axle in vertical and horizontal positions for 12T / 20T / 36T double bevel gears and the 28Z & 60Z turntables. See photos showing front and rear of these ideas. The 12T was hardest as requires a close 1.5L spacing but achieved with minimum parts yet still have a firm structure. Re 60Z turntable - the suggestion in a previous post may work but until get an actual new worm can't confirm - it may not engage fully with turntable teeth, my version lines the worm gear on the same plane as the turntable gear teeth. NB position of newworm gear shown by 2 yellow 1/2 bushes. For reference I have labelled each one - if larger close ups wanted I can provide them. Comments / suggestions please. Thanks for the info. - don't have the new worm gear yet. New sets with them in not released until Dec 20th in UK so no chance to get one until Jan 2017 None available yet on Brickowl nor on parts direct from Lego. Think I have figured out how to mesh the new worm gear with 12T DBG and both 28Z & 60Z turntables. The 12T DBG proved most difficult to achieve. Also have noticed the 2L axle with pin has less gripping power. and slightly bendy !- 5,507 replies

The spacing between new worm gear and a 20T double bevel gear (DBG) is 3L and for 36T DBG is 4L but it doesn't appear to mesh with a 12T DBG nor the 28Z & 60Z turntables unless someone knows otherwise.- 5,507 replies

Ammended post: Quote from 42060 review:_ "The most exciting new part is this new 1-length worm gear (6170153 in dark bluish grey) that has a larger diameter than the old 2 length 4716 Worm that has been around since 1985." https://mi-od-live-s.legocdn.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/6181998.pdf See page 62 step 80. ------------------------------ I have built a version of this using a cut down 2L worm and it works great - very compact. If you use two Long pins with centre hole instead of the 1 x 2 cross block its much stronger and allows you to have either 8:1 or 24:1 reduction using cut down 2l standard worm. Presumably with new worm you should be able to get 20:1 and 36:1 reduction.- 5,507 replies

Lift Mechanism
doug72 replied to DwalinF's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have made an updated version of the crank operated system which works very smoothly and consitently. The operating mechanism and motor could be located out of sight behind a building or beneath it with the cord guided by pulleys. Gear reduction is 40:1 but can be anything you require, travel determined by the length of the crank arm to give 2 x arm length = lift travel -

Large Lego chain links with studs now received and a new test rig built - see video: Overall it is still fairly large and might be too big to fit into a mondular building but it demonstrates the operation principle. If I could find away to connect the swinging link arm onto the small track treads it could be made smaller and more compact. Should be useful for a GBC lift. Anyone got ideas if that is possible ? -
There should be a refresh icon there is on mine. click the address bar and then click the icon at the right hand side of the address bar at top of the screen.(small circle with arrow)

This problem does not seem to be as big a problem on other forums. Today Lego Trains changes pages OK but Technic still freezes until refresh page. On some other forums there is slight delay but changes OK. Sometimes a box appears at bottom of screen with a rotating icon and saying Loading. Other times does not appear. All rather odd.

Thanks, Large track links are on order and will then be able to make more compact version. Will see if I can make GBC lift. -

After a lot of veiwing the video finally understand how it works after a lot of pauses / run, being able to view at slow speed would make it easier to see the motion. At the end of the white arm it connects to the chain via a fitting which has a vertical slot. The extended link on the chain fits into this and it slides up or down as the link passes around the chain spockets at each end thus changing the direction of the white arm. I set out to devise a mechanism based on this but without using the slotted cam box. The test rig works OK but needs refining to make more compact and sturdy. I recall from my days at sea that bridge front windows had windscreen wipers that went back and forth horizontaly. This was achieved by a use of a chain and a swing arm link to the wiper which run on guide rails. I have made a test rig to see if this would work - see video. I used a large catapiller track as easiest to fit the swing link onto. With the smaller track it is not possible to do this. I have a short section of old lego track that uses old style red tecnic sprockets which also have two studs on each link to attach a swing link to. Large Lego Chain link: http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-black-large-chain-link Checking on line to see if available anywhere -
There is a forum topic for this see above quote. Doesn't seem be to happen on all different forums. Some OK - others have a short delay before text becomes clear again but on Technic Forum only works if refresh before page changes and text OK. Also I have trouble when i want to copy something and then paste text into a posting - sometimes it works other times it doesn't and have to drag stuff across from forum pages open on Safari to page open on Firefox.

The grey pages have returned when you try to move to another page in thread. Only when "refresh" is click does it go to desired page and text appears again clearly.

I had the same problem using a iPad, but then it went back to normal after couple of days. if it doesn't, click your refresh and the page should appear as it should again. ps, it was also happening on my iMac but OK now.

Ingenious but can't figure out what changes the direction with the motor running constantly one way - can you explain please? The shuttle goes up and down in the groove but how does that alter the direction - doesn't seem to be connected to anything ? -

What is the vertical distance you require ? I have an idea for a cam operated system. -

The problem with rope drums winding on and off is that it is not consistent especially if the is more than one layer of rope on the drum. It is also hard to achieve getting the end points of the hoist correct because of un-even winding of cord onto the drum. I found this when building tower cranes and used elastic cord and friction method. If you have space there is a very simple method of operating hoist - that I recall from my model railway days. It uses a slowly rotating arm, ( 3 rpm), the end of the arm is connected via a cord to the load / cabin,. As the arm slowly rotates it raises and lowers the load / cabin. It also has the added advantage of using only a single fixed length cord. The travel of the load / cabin is equal to 2 x the length of the arm. ( “X-C" Also the load / cabin slows right down at each end of its travel but speeds up to max. at the mid point. By using a slightly longer cord dwell time can be achieved when cabin is at the bottom. Using elastic cord might be possible to arrange dwell time at both top and bottom. I intend to build a demonstration model show see if this works. See this diagram. Fig 58 & 59a Motor /gearbox “A” rotates arm “BB”. Cord attached at one end of arm “BB” Lower diagram: The device shown at “H" has a micro switch to stop the motor each time it revolves once. A push button that bypasses this restarts the moment. For the application you required this may not be required and arm BB can be shortened to 1/2 i.e. “X-C” shown in lower diagram. This device might be useful for GBC lifts. I built a vertical lift GBC machine which has auto change over and cycles up and down using a single M motor that might be suitable for what you require. Uses an auto change over gearbox drive and rubber cord for drive ropes to the cage / platform. -
Starting yesterday when I click to go to a forum page the text is OK and clear to BUT if I click to view a page further back in the tread all the text goes faint with faint images and photos ! If close forum and re-open then 1st page I view is clear text with good contrast But same happens if try to view a previous page i.e. faint text with all images cloudy.
