Models for 2H of 2011
Crtlego replied to menad's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
UNIMOG U400!!!! EPIC! CAN'T WAIT!!! Too bad its going to be so expensive.. If its more expensive than the 8043 I probably wouldn't be able to buy one.. Maybe Ebay will help with that.. -

Nah.. I was just pressured by time.. -
santa gave me 8043
Crtlego replied to Alasdair Ryan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I didn't get my excavator for Christmas but I was able to time my build... approximately 3 and a half hours. I tried to build it quickly because I was eager to play with it and take it apart to use in my mocs.. -

WOW!! Thats a lot of TECHNIC!! I'm surprised a structure like that can even support itself! NICE WORK! -
My latest trial truck!
Crtlego replied to Crtlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We just got our first snow fall! After it stops snowing I'm going to take the Mini 4X4 V2 out for a spin and I couls create a video and post here if anyone is interested. -
New 16T
Crtlego replied to GuiliuG's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I noticed this new gear as well. It seems a bit smoother but for some reason I feel like there is something wrong about it. I guess its just its a new piece and I haven't gotten used to it. I got in my 8043 which I believe is new because I got the actuators with 38X0 labeling and the instructions with a cardboard reinforcement in the bag. It looks interesting though. -
Awesome MOC!! It looks amazing it is incredibly realistic! Its nice that there are pictures to compare the real thing with the Lego version. I'm stunned by the number of green parts that there are in this MOC.. I didn't even know that there were this many green parts.. but like Blakbird said there is the possibility that they may be painted.. From what I see I'm questioning the plausibility of having a "transmission with 16 forward and 4 reverse speeds" unless its a typo.. I don't even think that's possible even without legos but even if it were possible with legos, I highly doubt it would fit in the given space! About the tires.. The front ones are definitely lego and are probably the ones from the 8297 Offroader. If you zoom in you can see the typical Lego markings, including size/ dimensions, on the rim of the rubber. The back ones besides looking like they are of a different material I can almost guarantee are not from a lego set but I could most certainly be wrong. And it would be awesome to have tires of that size!! Anyways.. Awesome creation! The look is perfect and seems to be completely functional too!

My latest trial truck!
Crtlego replied to Crtlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks.. That is exactly what I decided to change in version 2 and fortunately it helped a LOT! Yes that is the main problem with the truck. Like you said the RC is not able to perform as well with PF and although it may not be apparent at all times during the video, the truck slows down when under stress and the engine's whining lowers and eventually stops. - This is V2 which I actually finished a while ago but haven't got time to publish it until now. The major change is the weight distribution which is centered in the center module.. Here is the video of V2. Here is the video of the V2 offroading! Enjoy! -
Hey everybody! I just wanted to present a couple videos of my new trial truck.. THE MINI 4X4!! Its name pretty much sums up everything. It has four wheel drive powered by an RC buggy motor, and four wheel independent steering using 2 M Motors. It has pendular suspension via two turntables and two rubber bands. For now I will post the videos and I will go into detail in a later post as I am quite busy right now.. Here is the primary video.. And here is the video of it offroading.. Enjoy!! I'll be back with more details and V2 soon!!

8043 vs 8258
Crtlego replied to davidmull's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is quite a tough decision. I purchased the 8258 and have just recently purchased the 8043.. The 8258 definitely has more parts and makes for a great way of increasing your parts count. It has a turntable, a couple actuators, XL motor, and a lot of those new gear racks and rectangular frames.. It also has a lot of red panels which is cool. All in all, BIG set, LOTS of pieces The 8043 has a lot PF parts which is nice if you don't already have any. It also has a turntable, four actuators, four M Motors (YEAH THAT'S A LOT!), and the tracks. That was a big reason for me buying it. I needed more motors and receivers but also wanted to get my hands on some tracks.. They are my first ones.. All in all, specialized parts.. PF!! Tracks! Depending on how many lego sets you already have I will give you two suggestions. If you have a lot of legos then go ahead and get the 8043.. If you don't have a LOT of legos then go ahead and get the 8258.. Its cheaper and has TONS of useful parts. Good luck making a decision.. I completely agree. -
Crowkillers' 2011 Supercar WIP
Crtlego replied to DLuders's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It looks amazing as usual!! I really like how everything fits so perfectly. I don't think the fourth function is suspension though.. All four shocks are locked in place so it wouldn't make sense unless he plans on changing it later..? -
Solic's 4x4 Tanker
Crtlego replied to DLuders's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
WOW!! Impressive MOC! The look is cool and it functions like a real offroader!! I was quite impressed with how well it is able to drive around but then I remembered that you were using the RC buggy motors! It still takes some expertise though to use them properly! By looking at the last picture of the front drive module it looks like that is very compact and ruggid.. I assume that you are using the same differential in the front that you used in the back right? Do you know what the gear ratio was going from the motor to the differential? I have tried using the same motor but I usually end up destroying the gear tips.. So the gear ratio might be something to look into. Nice MOC! -
As I am only a customer I can only tell as much as I know.. To know for sure a lego official would have to clarify but here goes.. I compared the instructions that were provided in my set to the "updated" ones on Lego's page and they match up. That is good I guess.. My actuators were all labeled 38X0 and after using them they seem to be much smoother than my actuators from the 8258 Crane Truck or the Telehander... I don't know whether all of the sets were recalled I assume they were.. And after looking at the facts I presented I made the conclusion that it was the new version.. I'm not exactly sure but I don't think there is a way of knowing from the outside.. Ohh.. I forgot to express my thoughts about the finished excavator.. The build was quite awesome. It only lasted 3 hours and couple minutes but it was quite interesting. As I didn't have that much time to build it I decided to speed build it and by doing so I was not able to spend the time trying to understand the positioning or use of every part and because if this the set looked very complex!! When I finished and I first turned it on.. I immediately noticed that all four of the M Motors were EXTREMELY smooth. Compared to the "smoothness" of the M Motors I have gotten from Lego Shop At Home the new ones are like AMAZING!! Although one of the receivers that came in my Lego was faulty.. One of the motor ports wasn't working.. I replaced it with one of my old ones and continues playing with the excavator! It was very nice and I really liked the amazing quantity of functions that could be packed into such a small set. I plan on making many mods when I get the time. I did however feel limited by the movement of the tracks.. I felt like disconnecting the bottom portion and just playing around with the excavator's enormous bucket! I'll probably make it an offroad excavator and use the 8297 Offroader's wheels but time is so very limiting..

Very cool! I really liked how you used the liftarms as part of the frame. Their shape is perfect for those wheels.. -
Beach Buggy
Crtlego replied to grindinggears's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice!! I really like the look of the buggy. It looks so rugged and probably is. I particularly liked the use of the large offroader tires. They are awesome! I have had a similar problem with several of my differentials and have had to order back-ups.. Just curious.. Which version of the differential are you using? Are you using new ones like the one in the 8297 or the older ones? -
I was building my brand new 8043 excavator and I noticed that there were errors.. not in the actual order of steps or putting a piece in the wrong place.. but as in actual "graphical" errors. After all the years of building I have actually never seen any so I thought it was interesting to actually find some. I created this topic to see if anybody else has noticed any "errors." First.. Included in the 8043 are a new version of the gray 16-tooth gears. The change is in the look of the place that the axle slides into it. The first reference to this piece is on page 20 step 7.. If you look at the gear it is the old version.. not the new one.. Second... On page 51 step 10.. Two M Motors are installed.. If you look inside the tan box with two steps.. the motor on the right is messed up where the axle would normally be placed. When looking at the motor in any of the steps this error is gone.. I have not finished building and am still on booklet A so there might be more errors that I will run into.. Its not a big deal at all but I just thought it would be an interesting topic.

RC motor & PF
Crtlego replied to MarcoB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't remember which moc it was that I used my RC motor in but I remember experiencing the same thing.. but without the smell or at least I don't remember there being a smell.. The on and off thing I have definitely encountered before but I remember it staying off for longer than 1 or 2 seconds.. I built a truck trial truck, which I will post soon, that uses the RC motor to drive all four wheels. There is a worm gear system involved and works perfectly because not only do I have speed but I have power. The only problem is when I get to something really tough and it doesn't want to run you can hear the hesitation in the motor's vrrrrrr sound.. Eventually it just comes to an expected stop when the stress is too high. I developed a system to work around this but it uses quite a lot of space and is currently not very efficient. I connected the motor to a PF switch and motorized the switch with an M Motor and connected the M Motor to the PF Receiver. The switch then goes to the battery box. This allows you to control, not very accurately though, the RC motor without stalling... It works but like I said takes a lot of room. -
I have just received my shipment and may I say WOW!! THAT IS FAST SHIPPING!! I placed my order Monday night.. And here it is 3 DAYS LATER!! Might I remind everyone that I selected the free shipping option which was given during the Brick Friday Weekend.. Now back to business.. I have opened the box and am blown away by the quantity of parts.. Its actually not that much compared to other expensive sets but it looks like a lot Turns out that the linear actuators are all labeled 38X0.. I also found that the instructions are placed in a bag with a cardboard sheet.. for protection I guess.. I remember reading somewhere that the instructions were updated but I don't remember where. If anyone can tell me where I should look to see if it is the new version that would greatly appreciated..

PF IR-receiver limits
Crtlego replied to Tobbe Arnesson's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is very interesting indeed. In my 8 Wheeler I had all wheel drive which consisted of 4 Xl motors and steering which is 1 M motor. I had all of these, 5 in total, going through to one Receiver and one Battery Box.. It seemed to work fine but I guess you never actually be able to tell the difference by just looking at it.. -
Okay. I took advantage of the discounts that Lego was offering and made the decision to order the new 8043 Motorized Excavator from the Lego Shop At Home site. After receiving my confirmation email the description said this.. "8043 Motorized Excavator V140" Of course.. the letters weren't actually bolded or underlined... But does anybody know what V140 is supposed to mean? I was thinking it might mean that this is the version with the new actuators and newer instructions.. but I wanted to know what the rest of the community knows about the subject.. And if anybody is curious.. It hasn't arrived yet.. When it does I will say whether it is in fact the newer version.. I would hope that it is.. It would only make sense ordering it from Lego that they give me the correct version!!

It is very impressive! I was surprised that for a truck of that size to be able to climb that steep of a ramp.. I noticed this as well. I was just working on a truck myself that uses turntables as joints giving it 360 un-needed degrees of rotation and attached a rubberband to make it come back to its normal starting position. The turntable has lots of friction and in turn, does not like to move back to its normal place.. Maybe I should lubricate it.. As for the drivetrain in your truck.. Does it use only 1 xl motor for drive? Because if it does, and even if it doesn't , that is a very nice and secure system of gearing..
