Pybricks Q&A
ord replied to Pybricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That information about the typewriters and terminology is very interesting @Toastie, thanks for sharing! What would the benefit be over the official Lego block languages (MINDSTORMS and PoweredUp)? My instinct is to say no, as it could take resources away from developing the current IDE - which is so good and has features that I'm looking forward to. -

That is indeed very clever. Reminds me of this (same principle as mine but 3D printed): -

That's an interesting concept, I hope you can share it here for us to see . -
[MOC] Rigid Chain Actuator
ord replied to ord's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@aeh5040 I didn't invent the concept - I noticed it on the chain that opens my window, although on that mechanism both chains coil to the right hand side (this wasn't really practical with Lego). Aside from that, I've read that they're used in industrial machines where space is at a premium, for example in scissor lifts. Yeah, a spiral coil or something could look nice :). I guess I was just going for a low profile... And it was a bit tricky finding the right curved pieces to guide the chain. -

Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate the kind words . -
The idea for this MOC came to me when opening and closing my window - it uses a similar mechanism. The chain design took a few iterations to get right. The blue half pins on every second (light bluish grey) chain link are crucial to wedge the links together and make the chain rigid. I hope you like it.

There's some info about it here: I think it's not compatible with the powered up app but it has a rechargeable battery and quite a small volume (and maybe on-board storage?). Could have some niche uses I think.- 5,506 replies

I think it's a problem with the Powered Up app (I've been frustrated by this too). Maybe it's because commands and feedback are sent via Bluetooth, causing delays... Controlling the motors with Pybricks or Mindstorms software seems to be within +- 3 degrees.- 5,506 replies

Thanks @shroomzofdoom for this information. Very keen to get one of these motors. What speed is the motor at? I always run into problems at ~20% speed or less.- 5,506 replies

End of a Reviewing Era
ord replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I always enjoyed reading your reviews @Jim - beautifully structured with photos to match. As well as being pleasing to look at, your photos often served as a good reference for me for new parts (high quality, taken from the right angles), so that I will miss. Thank you for all of the work you have done over the years. -

No sorry, just the Studio file that I linked (it is grouped into eight steps that should be followed in order). -

Great B-model with some nice use of parts! Also those renders look just about photo-realistic .- 1,124 replies

I think they will suffice then - I won't be shooting in low light, the FZ80 comes with 60x optical zoom and I have a GoPro for wide angle if needed. Honestly I'm just looking out of necessity - I would continue to use my phone camera if it worked (and actually it would be cheaper to buy a new phone than a Lumix G7). Thanks for the help

Thanks for the info @SaperPL. Your pans look nice. Personally I like to film from further away and zoomed in so I think the GoPro is out for me (ah yes, wide angle is what I meant by fisheye). I have been using my Galaxy S10 phone camera which has been great (4k video, big screen, can tweak lots of settings, can edit right on the device) but unfortunately the camera is broken and I can't fix it. It's an option but I was hoping to find something cheaper. For example the Panasonic Lumix FZ80 and TZ90 both claim to shoot 4k video and are a fair bit cheaper. Is there any reason why these bridge/compact cameras wouldn't suffice?

I do have an older GoPro (not sure if 4k) but it only shoots in fisheye. I prefer to shoot from further away to reduce the perspective distortion (I should add this as a requirement - that the camera can capture HQ 4k video at say 2-4x zoom). Thanks

I am looking for a 4k video camera for a few hundred USD/euros. It would be used mostly to shoot 4k videos while stationary (mounted to a tripod). Easy file transfer to a computer for editing is important too. Does anybody have a recommendation?

[MOC] 8 Legged Walker
ord replied to ord's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you everyone. A lot of respect to Tchebyshev for creating this mechanism nearly 150 years ago. This diagram helps to show why the geometry is important: For half of the cycle of the input, the output smoothly moves nearly in a horizontal line. For the other half, it lifts up and moves back to the start at a higher speed. So, with two of these mechanisms 180° out of phase with each other (and connected to feet) there will always be at least one foot on the ground. -

@gyenesvi thank you! The link I posted has a very nice video explaining the mechanics. @howitzer thanks! -
It is essentially two Tchebyshev Plantigrade Machines mounted to the sides of a technic hub. The most difficult part was getting the ratios of the linkages right (and relatively form locked): The Studio file is on my bricksafe if anyone wants to build it (it doesn't go too well on carpet - that's what the round feet are meant to help with. Also, the file shows frictionless pins at the tops of the legs - replacing these with loose-fitting friction pins if you have them will make the legs sturdier): https://bricksafe.com/pages/ord/8-legged-walker Cheers!
