MOC: Protector of Rapture
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to Dr_Chronos's topic in LEGO Action Figures
I love this build. It is simple and looks like BIONICLE, but still clearly evokes the appearance of a Big Daddy. The use of Carapar shells is also an inspiring touch for me; I never knew that those oddly-blended shells could look so good alongside gold. -
At this point, we still don't have enough evidence to say if it means anything or not; the reference to "BIONICLE history" could refer to the line's history in the real world, just as much as it could mean there is an actual connection between the in-story histories of the two BIONICLE lines.

Though quite obvious to those familiar with the early-middle years of the first BIONICLE, I imagine this could require a good deal of research (or luck in running across someone who does remember the Vahi) from those who have never heard of BIONICLE before now, since all they have to go on is a vague repeated image.

[REVIEW]: 70785 Pohatu Master of Stone
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
I've made an attempt at a kicking Pohatu: https://www.flickr.com/photos/127192117@N04/16247326196/in/photostream/ Unfortunately, even by making a completely custom torso, his body still looks odd to say the least, so I can see why LEGO shied away from implementing his original gimmick. -
Battle for the Gold Mask Semi-finalists and Winner
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Did I imply that I thought those restrictions appropriate for this contest, specifically? If so, I ought to have clarified. I was only speculating on what rules might be appropriate for future competitions, and I admitted that they would likely only work in some types of contest, an idea which you have expanded on. That the wording of this contest encouraged the creation of large and generic -a word I do not use in a derogatory sense- villains I considered, and ought to have mentioned previously to better explain my own position. I suppose my disappointment lies with the theme of the contest itself, under which the victory of the biggest, most devilish-looking villain is inevitable. -
Battle for the Gold Mask Semi-finalists and Winner
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
How fair this type of rule is would depend on who the contest is aimed at. If aimed mostly at AFOLs I'd think it overly restrictive, but if the contest was made to appeal to a more general audience interested BIONICLE or CCBS, I'd think it might be appropriate, alongside a prototype parts restriction. If implemented well, this type of restriction would really open up these kinds of contests to those with less developed LEGO collections. Working within the restrictions of a certain height or length limit would encourage implementing creative concepts with minimalist building techniques, instead of creating extravagantly-executed builds that look generic. Though not appropriate for all, or even most, contests, such rules might be worth considering in certain situations. -
That seems to be an overly simplistic view of things. Though I would say that the winning MOC was judged more on execution than on being an actually interesting concept, the execution of the winner's rather generic concept was beautifully done. That it used a large amount of parts seems irrelevant, so long as those parts were used well.

Battle for the Gold Mask Semi-finalists and Winner
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
This is an important point to consider when hosting contests such as these; what do you prioritize when judging between concept and execution? Extremely interesting concepts might be badly executed or not fully realized for lack of parts, and on the flipside, such as in the case of the winner, a generic (in comparison with some more far-out entries) concept can be executed beautifully. -
I understand what you are getting at, but you are phrasing it oddly. "darker/mature" implies you see some strong correlations between the two concepts, and that disturbs me. Darker never equates more mature; a dark work can be quite juvenile or absurd, or an optimistic or relatively conflict-lite setting can be complex. Though the story is laughably simplistic at this point, it could become more complex without necessarily being much darker than it is now.

I still remember that beautiful moment when, near the end of 2008, the video of Mata-Nui rising was posted on BIONICLE.com. Though I doubt there will be any reveals of such scale or uniqueness in BIO2015, I do hope that there comes a point in the next 3 years where seemingly unrelated bits of evidence are put together perfectly, and give us a better understanding of the story.

New to Bionicle, looking for MOC tips
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to Henchmen4Hire's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Here's an image showing a very basic overview of the Character Creation Building System (CCBS). It has some clear images of basic CCBS bones, so it's a good starting point. http://s3images.coro...y2dzkgrm96i.jpg As for the older BIONICLE components (Pre-2011), many are quite specialized, and the most widely used body build was the "Inika build" named for the Toa Inika, who introduced said body design. If looking to make a build with a clear distinction between skeleton/frame and armor/paneling, go with CCBS. -
It's likely that these are non-canon absurdities, and not accurate depictions of the beings & creatures they show. However, they are fun to look at and speculate over, even with their glaring flaws.

Though I am disappointed by the homogeneous appearance of the Toa and Protectors, I adore this artwork's style and the contrast it makes with the simplistic, bright animation used in the online shorts. The style is far grittier, and the more robotic depictions of the Skull Spiders are an interesting choice. The emptier, more ruinous landscapes are also of interest, and, contrasted with the high-tech Skull Spiders, make Okoto look like some sort of post-apocalyptic setting, in which the only remnants of Old World tech are deadly machines and valuable Kanohi. Though I suppose my impressions of the setting's appearance are a bit like BIONICLE meets Fallout:NV, it sounds like a fun headcanon to mess around with.

What search terms would you use to find them? Browsing via parts and then looking for listed lots shows few results, if any. I saw 2 heads for sale, and no eye stalks.

For those of you who use Bricklink often; in your experience, how long might it be until there is any amount of BIONICLE 2015 heads and eyestalks? The very skewed 5/2 mask/head ratio that I have right now is driving me mad, even if most of those masks are Skull Spiders.

Beautiful. The Nui-Rama were some of my favorite Rahi, and this MOC nicely captures their appearance, right down to their eyes being "head"-type pieces.
-
This may have been mentioned previously, but I discovered that Gali's mask can clip onto a Brain Attack head and stay in place without any extra parts needed.

Odd, it seems the Toa I ordered shipped separately from the Protectors; However, considering that said Toa were shipped with 2-day priority for free, without my asking for it, I cannot complain.

I've been playing around with Skull Spider masks and this head, and found that the Space Skeleton Arm piece, when attached to the beam on the head's back, acts as a good brace that stops the Skull Spider masks from flopping up and down.

Bionicle Protector Alternate Builds

Ah, the new year! Time to check the online LEGO shop... Out of stock, will ship in 30 days Drat. I assume that is the maximum, and not minimum waiting period, but even then the sight of it bothers me. Thankfully I found Kopaka and POE in stores earlier this week, so that will hold my impatience in check.

Ah. well, I was hoping we'd get a polybag earlier, the potential for one is what has discouraged me from searching in stores. Still, I'm sure I can find some pretense to spend some outrageous amount of money a few months from now.

[REVIEW]: 70789 Onua: Master of Earth
The Kumquat Alchemist replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Because it is a reboot, and whether or not Onua is 90% accurate to the 14-years-past Mata Onua is irrelevant to the target audience. The oft-cited "HF" aesthetic is the CCBS (Character Creation Building System) aesthetic, a change from BIONICLE's highly greebled and specialized (and thus, not very versatile, even for building other action-figures) array of parts. CCBS is meant to provide the basic components for any action figure line LEGO might release, so saying BIONICLE has the HF aesthetic is akin to calling out Galaxy Squad for looking like Star Wars sets because they both use basic bricks.
