  1. Hello Clarise Murderholes... *starts to salivate at the sound of that word* If you have a look at the main Johnny Thunder set in Egypt, I own it but have forgotten the exact name there's a trap door at the top of the entrance that rains down rocks on any intruder, whilst you don't need an elaborate mechanism having a few small grey lego bricks near the top of the structure would emphasise the use of the murder hole. Perhaps I'm letting my bloodlust get the better of me... X-D
  2. People are definately doing this just to be awkward... It would be unfair to both of the contestants to re open the contest. Perhaps a showdown will be necessary with a deadline of only a couple days for the MOC's so we can really nip this in the bud, either that or we just say it's tied - end of story. It's already half way through November - far too late to still be on this Holloween business.
  3. I've only recently got hold of up to date versions of AOE I and II and even there I never really use half the game options. I'm probably just betraying my age here but all games seem to have gotten far far too complicated and lengthy now. The idea of playing for a couple hours mininum once in a while seems to have gone and now one needs a couple days minimum for half these games. I know people who play these things for about 12 hours a day every, who has that kind of time? Waste of life anyway... What was more complex about this one over the older games?
  4. Well the meekest of prizes X-D For all our pirate lego we seem to be seriously lacking in gold and silver bars. Who's been embezzling all the funds then? This is exactly why us imperials can't trust those dirty thieving pirates and islanders on this forum :-P
  5. This is ridiculous. How long is this running for? I'd have thought we'd all voted by now and I can't see why it's so even steven when everyone claims to have voted for 007. Right gentlemen, pistols or swords? I'll see both of you at dawn with your respective seconds. X-D
  6. Thanks Tiny Pies! Some of those images are really amazing, especially the one with the Spanish caravel being watched by the Indians. I think you've twisted my arm here, I really am going to have to get this game. Going through a strong Spanish phase with things at the moment, which is odd being British. :-) Though I'll return to putting holes in Frenchmen soon enough right now I want to eat Paella and build Hispaniola... this game lets me do all that.
  7. In the end of the day a fortress is as you say always something Spartan rather than Athenian. So Northern Norway, is your fortess protecting Trondheim then? That used to be the old Viking capital if I remember. Or is this to be an unknown Norweigan base in the Caribbean? You should tell your Danish neighbours that colonizing Iceland and Greenland won't get them any coconuts and rum. X-D
  8. For shame on you all... The guy asked which version of gate to use and you all want him to build the Taj Mahal! X-D
  9. The facial hair aside you're beginning to resemble my mother Mr Phes! I'll happily spend half the day going on about the Union Jack, add justrification to woody64's comments regarding how the Happsbergs had to adopt the term of the Austro-Hungarian empire after the revolt of the Magyars. Provide historical multitudes on the slintering of Vatican orders to justify the various Catholic orders of the missionaries in the New World. In the end of the day it was a bloody difficult thing to keep my answer this short on this matter. If you don't want me to take the thread completely off track don't tempt me to keep on adding. Perhaps if we dedicate a section specifically to history then I or anyone else could try compile some sumatory notes on the nations, economics, social, religious and geographical details that pertain to this site. Perhaps in a selected zone like we have for MOC's torso designs etc we could feature a thread for heraldy and vexillogy, a display of historical maps, that kind of thing.
  10. I wouldn't put too much into that Michael Moore perspective, people will look for any reason to disparage the current Republican US, it's just the usual liberal media fashionability. I will however contain my thoughts being as this isn't the place. At any rate this is getting ridiculous, I suggest a show of force, these two will have to come up with MOC gunslingers and put them on display at high noon for us to vote and simulate who's bullet hits first. :-P
  11. You'd better believe it Orange Boy :-P Anyway, you lot being our Allies more often than not you can be glad there's still a couple of us with brains about or Holland would have never endured the reformation given the Spanish, French and Germans have all fancied you as an extra province. X-D
  12. Basically I'm going to have to make this correction to everyone personally. It's not so much that I mind the mistake from Europeans for whom English is as you've pointed out a second language but the mistake is quite honestly unforgivable from English countries like the US, Australia, South Africa, Canada etc. The history of the British Isles is long and complicated but to sum up very very quickly Before 1707 AD England and Scotland were totally seperate countries although their history was strongly inter-related. Wales although also technically a seperate country was conquered and annexed by England far back in the 13th century so it is thus and always has been considered part of the Kingdom of England and could never really be independent. Right so when have England politically or her colonies prior to 1707 we can use the word 'English' as a suitable adjective the same way you'd say 'French' or 'German' or 'Spanish'. But in 1707 for various reasons and historical ties Scotland and England became one country which meant that the larger of the two islands that make the British Isles was now one political indentity called 'Great Britain' and so from that time on unless there is a specific reason we are talking about the countries inside the British Isles you wouldn't use 'English' but rather 'British' for all international matters. One of the reasons I think Americans make the common mistake is because at the start of the American Colonies England and Scotland were seperate and Virginia, Carolina etc were all 'English' colonies but by the time the War of Independence was on those 13 colonies are 'British' colonies because the declaration of independence was in 1776 if I remember correctly. So Americans tend to think they were English so when they revolted that was who they were revolting against as it's stuck. Few make the political distinction. A lot of people also call it a war between the Americans and the British or between the Americans and the English... The United States doesn't exist until the colonists have won so they won't be 'American' until that time. In the case of the War of 1812 that truly is a war between the United States (Americans) and Great Britain (British). English remains the name of the language for entirely different reasons because English as a language started around 600 AD and slowly took control of the British Isles as a common language and thus all British and Irish people and their descendents in the colonies have this as the first language and from there on because of the power and influence of the British Empire and subsequently the US English has become the global language it is today. Really sorry for the long post, I tried to cut it down as much as I could but needed to give some reasoning. I'm sure this is now in the wrong thread entirely, move it if you feel it necessary Mr. Phez, beginning to think a kind of history or map room would suit this sort of thing.
  13. Captain Sly Owl was just in the lead when I voted, was that just my vote that pushed him thus? When does this poll expire so we can be done with it all? It's beginning to look like the US presidential election of 2000 :-P
  14. I can see your confusion and I'm going to vote for option 2 with the doors being inside and further back. Ultimately with most fortresses you could have a grill gate that runs down at the front facing outside which would be infront of your doors. I don't see how you could implement this however without heavily altering the design. That sounds like a really big fortess. What's the reason for such a bastion? Has Napolean got you scared with all those troops? X-D
  15. It's nice to see some support on this. Thank you.
  16. I'm sorry but I'm going to start having to come down hard on people saying English when they mean British and vice versa. Most might not think it a big deal but it is, especially when we consider the colonization of North America where the colonies were of the English until the acts of Union in 1707 and thereafter it's the British. On another note it's interesting that others picked up on the uniform in that picture... the use of blue on the jacket confirms for me that it's perfectly acceptable to use Imperial Guard minifigs as they are to represent British forces without any changes. Atleast that's the story I'm sticking with to save money :-D
  17. That they are intended to be Spanish isn't the debate, what is, is that they can be used to represent other nations, particularly the Portuguese, follow this thread from the very beginning with every post because people getting the wrong idea of what I'm saying.
  18. Nah, this cartoon thing has gone way off the mark, that was just one photo i put in of a bunch, the game looks much in the same vein as the previous 2 and the artwork from that link is more sketchy. Apparently I just chose the wrong pic *wacko*
  19. Dude, that's the one picture I chose... the other stuff is more sketch work.
  20. That's exactly what I was getting at... Half of the British Museam in London is filled with ancient artifacts that doen't really pertain to the history of Britain or her colonies but if these things hadn't be brought to museams like that they would all be in private collections or destroyed-damaged by so many conflicts in the middle east etc. In the end of the day some things just need to be rescued by someone if no one with the right reasons will take responsibility. Usually it's the richest nations who can do this... at the time of the British Empire, Britain had the power and ability to move these things out of places that couldn't afford to protect them, likewise the US has in more recent years as the newer number 1 had that same ability. Whilst I understand this specific ship had only British and French connections it's a priceless creation of immense historical value. If the Greek government tomorrow said they were going to bulldoze the Parthenon to make room for a casino on the Acropolis even though it's not our heritage the entire western world would be up in arms to stop them. Sadly I guess no one felt strongly enough anywhere about this ship or as I said earlier did the Royal Navy atleast offer it to anyone?
  21. I could well be wrong unless I delve into the depths of posting history on this site but I haven't heard much mentioned about Age of Empires III. We've discussed Sid Meier's Pirates and other games but this one directly relates to the European colonization of the New World. I have yet to own a copy or play the game as time is limited but was an avid fan of the first and second in the series owing to the real historical novelty of the real time strategy games market. Nonetheless I will get a copy sometime but thought it worth showing some of the artwork of the developers. Has anyone played this game, what did you think of it? Check out the link for more pictures: http://www.ageofempires3.com/age3/Screensh...ConceptArt.aspx
  22. Well the Royal Navy should have made the offer to more than just the French, I doubt the Dutch saying they'd take her but with any luck the Americans would have taken her. I wouldn't care about the HMS Implacable being on display in Boston or Jameston so long as she was preserved. In many ways Britain either didn't think it through clearly or were too stubborn about the nationality of the ship. Anyone who is prepared to purchase and care for these ships has a right to accomodate them in their country - that should be an international maritime law to prevent tragedies like the scuttling of this ship from ever happening again. There should always be some wealthy American or Japanese firm or government to save the day hopefully. Britain could even have tried offering the ship to Canada or Australia that way still maintaining the British connection. Hell, if Peru said they'd buy the ship, let them have it!
  23. There's not much that can be done about spilt milk... It is a huge tragedy to me and yet another of many endless consequences to Britain's involvement in two world wars that she could have avoided but whilst this isn't the forum to get too political Britain constantly sacrifices it's own people, culture, achievements and pride in the name of defending those it has no obligation to. This ship is a mascot against liberal Britain if ever there was one but I don't think we've learnt anything. Money is money and that will never change but Britain will always waste it on a 3rd world backwater who's inhabitants don't give a damn about Britain than budget to preserve any token of true Britain. We never learnt from the American colonies, we never learnt from Ireland and I feel Britain never will learn. As far as the British government is concerned anything or anyone really British - and that reffers to colonials as well - the family of Canada, Australia, the US, NZ etc will always be last priority. The Implacable isn't the victim of insufficient funding, it's the victim of a poor social agenda that's age old. I'm sure I'll get flak for saying this but feel it's something the European and American members of the forum need to recognise when we question why she was scuttled. Perhaps she could have been made some international heritage protection through the UN, she'd certainly have qualified but as a ship is she applicable, did organisations like that exist at the time? Who knows, someday if a competant more Nationalist party came to power in Britain and this country was actually run by and for Brits again some effort could be made to salvage the Implacable. Wasn't something like that done with the Mary Rose? I'll have to try see what went on with that ship.
  24. We want more! We want more! It's always something to be especially proud of when it's in HMS ;-) I'm only a couple hours drive from Portsmouth, perhaps I should drive down and steal some more photos. :-P
  25. That building... *wub* *wub* *wub* I remember the original and liked the raised dock then but now with the new building and the uniformity of colour not to mention the period architecture I'm really impressed. Perhaps you can impose a photo of that against some background scenery to set it's scene. It's a beautiful dock and really needs a specialised gallery.
