  1. Finding a painting without knowledge of the painter or the event... eish, you guys like challenges don't you? Found quite an interestin website while I was doing a search for the artist. Might be useful for people... www.uniformology.com Other than that, no luck finding the artist, seriously needle in the haystack stuff this.
  2. That's a bit strange... I made the last posting to this thread ages ago, so why did this thread appear on the front forum page and indicate new postings?
  3. Where did those fine foxy wentches come from? Nobody told me they were a prize... I would have entered otherwise! X-D Congratulations lads on your rather belated winnings. Look forward to seeing what you come up with next competition! *y* That secret forum sounds most intreaguing... *humms the theme tune to The X Files*
  4. *looks at all the islanders getting all fired up* :'-( :'-( :'-( *looks at nearly empty ammo cartidge case* :'-( :'-( :'-( I think it's time for a tactical retreat (run for your lives!)
  5. I think the Dutch confusion might result in that there were several East India Companies run by different European nations so the Dutch members of this forum will automatically think of the VOC - Dutch East Indian Company given the simple term - East India Company. Both of these outfits were active in South Africa given the territorial significance in the trade route to the East. But I wonder if it's correct for 'John Company' to be active in the Carribean as the POTC films suggest given that's the New World. I'm sure as usual wikipedia will provide the answers.
  6. Was it Nelson who only had one arm?
  7. Damnit! My master plan has been foiled... but how did you know? I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those pesky kids and their dog! X-D
  8. That's a fair point. The two Napoleans are appropriate indications of his age. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Bonaparte originally attempt to resist the French occupation of Corsica in the early days... One easily forgets his true Nationality-Ethnicity but these seems to be common... Hitler not being German, Stalin not being Russian etc.
  9. I'm struggling to tell the French from the Austrians... can you give us a summation on the original painting? The exact battle, historican context etc.
  10. Let's just say I'm Anglospherical ;-)
  11. Well I'm British... so both Napolean's smell :-P Nice to see him on the run... Tiny Pies this one was really trumps. I understood what you were trying to achieve with the white torso and the addition of the little cosack-painter saga made it even more entertaining. Makes one consider that the microphone head could be used for Buckingham Palace guards now. The face of the star wars emperor was also an excellent touch because an ugly bugger like that must be half dead. X-D
  12. Soldiers can capture them easily... You say that like it's a bad thing. X-D I like those red and white sails... let's my men know where to aim the cannons. I've never had or seen the RBR though I'll blow it out of the water just as I do the BSB when my Imperial Flagship and Carribean Clipper gang up on her. X-D
  13. Now now... glittering cutlasses be damned! It's fake lego... *spits on the ground after saying these words*
  14. Er.... *scratches head*
  15. Damn Brickself to hell! I want those pics public now!!! What a kick-megablocks fort! Where's the jacuzzi though? I was in Portsmouth a couple days ago and saw plenty forts and sea defense structures like yours though being England the palm trees weren't quite as plentiful. X-D
  16. Seeing this sort of thing puts me to shame for not having or knowing how to use photoshop. It's also a pity that there aren't any other holidays that lend themselves so creatively as Holloween.
  17. Genius... Such an original idea Tiny Pies! Adding the painter was a very nice touch. Hougoumont always seems to make it into every Waterloo feature film that I can think of. I'm amused imagining the painter floating on a little raft and painting scenes from the battle of Trafalgar X-D But once again in closing... very nicely done!
  18. Do you really want to start on one character typos? Considering half the members aren't first language English speakers we'll be here all day. Yes you spotted 'band' as opposed to the intended 'bank'... well done, you clever thing you. Would you like a medal now?
  19. Do we have to say BS instead of Brickshelf... can't help thinking of it as something else. :-P
  20. It would have been nice to offer some kind of illustrated explanation here but as I don't have any lego with me it's hard to contruct an example and photograph it.
  21. I'm very much NOT liberal, that was my point... As 99% of the world is I have all the more reason not to be. I have absolutely no regrets of the colonial period and I re-assert that the reason I attend this forum is it's one haven from liberalism and the reason I won't continue a discussion that will provoke debate. So my lego imperials will march all over the world quite happily. :-P
  22. Let's not go down that road... I for one am proudly not so bleeding heart liberal X-D I think we should nip this one in the bud, I come here to escape the left-wing in everything and I'm glad of the escapism, with lego you make the world they way you want and that's it's beauty. Back to the point of the Dutch, it certainly didn't hurt Orange Willy to be co-regent on the throne of England, his use of conjoined English, Dutch and Germanic troops was necessary to secure Holland as an independent Protestant nation. For the most part in history those nations tend to get along and ally - the world wars being something of an trend breaker.
  23. Glad to see we're off the subject of wenches... sure all 0.0 of our female members in the forum were getting uncomfortable :-P 75 pieces only? That's gonna be tight. Gentleman as always my vote is up for sale, if you'd like my band account number just let me know. X-D I really do think it's a shame that it's come to this and I am going to lay down my whipstick and let those of you who were voting just to maintain the tie know that if this happens again by God you'll be swinging on His Majesty's gallows! *skull*
  24. I don't have much in the way of ideas but thought it was time someone replied to this. My only thought would be that you'd need a hell of a lot of plates and use the wider ones more to the centre of the hull then as you move outwards use plates of increasingly diminishing width to add curbiture and height - accentuating the hull. The tricky part will be in creating the bow as the stern doesn't really have to narrow considerably. Perhaps if you build the mid-ships section first then use the plates onto that section in a syncronised pattern whereby they tapper and form a point. I know you could do with some illustration but it's near impossible for me to illustrate. First try make a smaller scale model so you can get the building concept nailed down and then use that as your inspiration for the larger model. Frankly you are going to need a hell of a lot of plates to create real subtle curbiture otherwise bricks between the plates will make the ship look clunky and boxy.
  25. Strictly speaking as an imperial man what I really like about this set is it's so easy to take aim and have pot shots at that vermin pirate. He can't go anywhere in much of a hurry and we can use our ships to cut him down. :-P
