It's okay... Colonels don't have to take orders from minor Lieutenants :-P

Which is a shame... all of Africa, India, China and most the Pacific wouldn't be too hard to simulate with the lego that's out there... Just mix elements of pirate lego with ninjas, the indian stuff from the Johnny Thunder series, the 'indians' from the western stuff, all of that is easily compatable with the era of 1500 - 1850ish.

Vexillology (Flags) of historical reference
Col. Whipstick replied to Col. Whipstick's topic in LEGO Pirates
Excellent, I admit I'd already gotten started on other flags, that small flag adjustment might be useful anyway as I'm having trouble with the rectangular shape in designs on that size. So really you want me to make the small flag a hint more square? -

Well there are alternatives... The reason I've rendered a thick coloured boundary for the flag is because that immitates what lego themselves have done, however one can simply change the outline to say a light grey and it won't stand out as much or print the strictly rectangular flag. Or, with the use of a pen in the appropriate colour - smooth out the lines. It looks particularly bad on the flag of England because it's largely white but with other flags it's much less of a problem. I really need someone to confirm the sizes on batch 3 before I continue to design all different flags. -

Where is Lord of Pies when I need him to check those recent flags? Probably filling his hamster cheeks with pie again I tell you... He's the only one here who takes his share of the treasure in blueberry pastry slices. *sad* -
Er, I don't think so, the only way of knowing for sure is going through the annals of this website, just about anything with maritime history makes it's way in here. Primarily considering the Lego Pirates most discussions and models revolve around European colonialism in the New World and not so much focusing on the colonies or lands of the Old World of the time. I recently made a post suggesting alternative themes for Pirates and Soldiers and based it on Southern Africa - in that thread I mentioned having Arab dhows and pirates in the Indian Ocean as it was so during the Golden Age. No one seems to have done any MOC's remotely in this area though. Likewise Oriental Pirates would be useful and the Europeans colonized much of the Pacific but that too has never featured, these guys tend to have a Caribbean policy only.

Right, here is the 3 attempt. Let me know how these do... the smaller flags were pretty much square as that's the indication I got from you in the start, they are now slightly rectangular. The height has not been tampered with, only width. The larger flags have been increased. There's the bitmap version on my brickshelf too if gif may be causing the shrink problem. My Webpage -

Both flags are off by those sizes or just the largest one? -
Are you offering to pay for my ticket Mr. Phes? X-D And while you're at it, let's make SA a stop-over to Australia and New Zealand. All in all, the little roundtrip of the south shouldn't cost you too much and Captain Green Hair will indeed get his picture.

Bodyguards just to protect the flag... what will the Queen say? Okay, I've tried doing a little resize and here's what I've come up with, so try this set out: -

Damn, see those were the measurements I fed into the programme. Oh well I'll have to try resizing them, once we have a solid template I can make some real progress. :-/ Lord of Pies, so you printed them out and saw they were too small from that? -
I doubt very much I shall see South Africa for atleast another year and likewise my lego... This is why all I can ever offer in the way of creativity is graphic designs etc because I only need a laptop for that.

Okay, using MSPaint I've done the flag of England to what I'm hoping is the correct size for the lego pirate flags. I don't have any lego with me or for that matter a printer, so could someone please print this out and see if the sizes are correct, once this is confirmed I will get to work on an assortment of flags. Personally it looks a little small to me. I've posted the flags on my brickshelf account at: My Webpage -
Unfortunately I can't Green hair, my lego is in South Africa and I am in England, those photos were taken at the beginning of the year. This is one of the reasons no one ever sees me doing MOC's, I don't have a home as such so my stuff is all stored.

Thanks, I'll get onto a few now... At first I'll come up with the expected, some Union Jacks, the Tricolour etc and see where it goes. -
ITP (Port Royal) is almost exactly intact, save the crane building has been extended by an additional storey built on, otherwise it's completely recognisable as is Eldorado. Anyway, where the hell did that 'Professor of Colonial History' come from under my avatar, I didn't add it. *wacko*

Hi guys, it's my eventual hope that I can create some designs, official and customised of flags to join the torso's in our libary. My main problem is I don't have any lego with me and in order to design flags of the correct size so that people may print them and use them for MOC's I need the actual measurements of the official pirate lego flags. So could somebody please measure the diameters of both the large flag (the sort we see on forts and ships) and the little flag (the sort seen on rowboats etc). If I could have these measurements in the metric system I will get to work on some flags for people so we can take a break from the imperial red, imperial blue and skull and cross bones.

Have a few snaps on my brickshelf account... My Webpage Hope this helps

There's quite a few close-ups on the brickshelf account, plenty to drule over! I particularly like the incorporation of Eldorado Fortress and Port Royal into the design, it's a combination of nostalgia with innovation and reading between the lines it shows what could happen if the imperials work together. I notice Captain Roger hasn't posted anything, the sight of that thing should have scared him stiff as did this: Perhaps all the pirate members of our forum have jumped into their ugly little rowboats and made a run for it! :-P

How did you become a Pirate LEGO Fanatic?
Col. Whipstick replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I remember vividly my experiences with lego and pirate lego in particular. This is my story... Growing up in South Africa in the 80's home entertainment was not only limited as it was for all of us but I doubt we had half as much going on for kids as what Europe, the States and Australia etc had. So particularly during school holidays when I didn't have friends around I found lego was one of the things I took to that I could do all alone. I'd always had an old tub of the stuff which was hand me down bits and pieces from my much much older brother and sister and their friends and used to try make MOC's back then though as most of it was only basic lego the results weren't too inspiring. Maybe because SA was a bubble back then but I didn't think of lego as much more than the basic and town stuff but I was in for a treat! For my 6th birthday someone bought me a small troop of lego knights and a small lego space ship. These were really cool and I loved displaying them but still wasn't compelled to have to buy more and new lego. Then when I was about 9 my best friend and his family went on a long overseas holiday and when he returned from England and Disneyworld etc he had loads of Pirate Lego with him. He must have had atleast half of the range from '88 and '89. So he invited me over and I thought we were going to play some board game or something but instead we spent the first of many sunny warm quiet Sunday afternoons in his room laying out his sets and making plots and storylines over the pirates and the soldiers. M friend also gave me one of the catalogues out of his sets and I went home and for days and days couldn't take my eyes off what I'd been missing out on - Pirates, Knights, Town, Space but particularly Pirates caught my imagination! There was a beauty to these sets and coming from the colonies the tropical look and feel of them, added to my even limited knowledge of colonial history then. So mom and dad bought me Shipwreck Island and the bomber boat for Christmas that year and slowly I started to collect Pirates from there. It wasn't long before I too was making a long holiday trip with my family in '92 and upon my return I'd bought much of the Imperial guard and newer pirate sets and together we had a formiddable collection. I kept trying to collect for the next few years but I was entering teenhood and other things began to take up my time and money so the last couple years I never bought sets from also feeling that I couldn't keep up with the sheer number of sets. Many years went by but I kept all my original collection in storage without a single piece missing despite hours and hours of heavy play. Partially inspired by this website and the reality of getting into ebay and finding that I could reclaim sets I never had I started collecting again last year, enjoying a limited but adult budget that as a kid I never could. I continue to collect from a few themes as I love so much history but Pirates will always be my first love and if I could jump in a time machine... my Golden Age wouldn't be the 15th and 16th centuries of the caribbean, it would be the early 90's and the vivid memory of how nothing else could matter in life if one had lego like this! -
I like it for sure, who doesn't but I gave it a 3, not a 5. It's a neat and easy set to find the pieces for and construct one's self but it still feels a little too cramped for 4 minifigs and just looks like a pocket sized Eldorado, maybe that's the idea... I'm afraid I'll still have lagoon lock-up over this but it does give Sabre a little run for it's money.

Now what? You've gone and killed off the painter so that in effect is the last of the painting MOC's. Did you just decide to kill him given what I said? Or are you looking to retire the painting MOC business?

And now you have to legitimise to yourself that you can only have one of the two... It's gonna cut you up inside, you'll lose sleep, have to seek out counselling, your friends and family will disown you because all you can talk about are those two ships. Welcome to the world of lego addiction! X-D
