Did you see my working steering on the RTS Zavala? I faced this little problem of 4790, there as well! I don't modify pieces! (OK I have put electrical tape on them!) Here's a way for you to do it, in your "rubber ban" steering: Note: how the first thin technic part (I used the triangle, you could use others) goes on first. Then the wheel center (42610 in this case) goes on, the ridge at the end of the 4790's pin makes a GOOD friction contact with the hole in the wheel center. No Yes, I think you need a better/"more secure" way of attaching the base of inverted sloping panel. Gus, I am sure you will!! kurt

Guss a nice first effort. Rubber band steering! OK, did you look at using other technic parts? So that you could attach the rubber band on the other side of the ship's wheel mount? maybe on a small drum part? I didn't see a good picture of your rudder itself. The mizzen mast rigging, well I am not a fan of "not out to the sides" rigging, I don't think it looks "real". How are you attaching the two inverted sloped "panels" on the stern? Just some friendly feedback! kurt

another ship for the index: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/75680 One ship above and one still open issue above. kurt

Thanks for the info!! NOW that's cool! "Made the front page on Classic-Pirates.com"!! Thanks to you too! I do too! I wanted to have that AWE in the model. One of the replies I got (not here) was "That you did the technic work for the engines and rudder even with the investment of time and brick for the model itself only further impresses." This really summed-up what I was trying to achieve. The very accurate looking side-paddle-wheel walking-beam engine would have been a notable technic MOC. I build two! and put them into a ship. Of coarse to some extent that's expressed backwards, I have know about the Zavala since I started modeling the Republic of Texas Navy and realizing it, as a LEGO MOC, has long been a goal. Years ago I bought 100 1 x 14 gray technic bricks the only time they showed up in the LEGO store's pick-a-brick, because if I did try to model the Zavala I would have to build the gundeck with them. When the viking ship set came out, a "store" on bricklink pieced out a number of the sets, I got 15 hull center sections mostly in case I wanted to try to do the Zavala. One last word about the rudder, as I said, I build it many times trying to get it "right", but it still has a common problem that LEGO technic has called "gear lash" which I don't like and may try to fix the next time I build (or upgrade) a ship with working steering. Capt. green hair I was not "current" enough to be aware of your work, now that I am, and now that I have read some of your posts maybe we could do something together like a ship co-design in full view here in the forum. It would need to mostly be CAD so that everyone could see. Just an idea... I have just finished ordering all the parts (from bricklink) to build the MOC I am working on now. all the best kurt

I don't know more than the brickshelf name, the image is clickable, but here's a link to the top: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=Saracen

Glad you liked it. I have seen a few LEGO pneumatic walking-beam steam engines, just the engines. kurt

There was this post: And he posted it to the MOCs sorted by thread, SlyOWL moved it to this thread. Away he raised a good point, even the most fluent english language reader might find the ship type terminology to be a challenge should the thread help you out with links: 2: Links to Non-English language ship type reference info, how should we handle this? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_...guage_templates Says not to use flags (you know those little flags you can click on, on a multi-language web site) any longer, OK. It says to use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_code leads to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IETF_language_tag This site: http://www.langtag.net/ and this tool: http://people.w3.org/rishida/utils/subtags/ This is what I propose to do, I could add some thing like this near the top of the first post in MOCs sorted by types index thread: ----------------------------- Links to language specific ship type reference info: en English nl Dutch, Flemish ----------------------------- and add more as people find them. What do you'all think? More clear now? kurt

One supersized Battle Cannon, do you want fries with that?
RTN LNA replied to RTN LNA's topic in Pirate MOCs
Glad you enjoyed it!. I agree, "dark orange" is in fact the color I use on my bronze swivel guns: They are used on the black pearl-lite as well, as other ships of mine: For help on LEGO colors here are some references: http://www.isodomos.com/Color-Tree/Lego-Colors.html http://www.isodomos.com/Color-Tree/ http://news.lugnet.com/color/ http://www.peeron.com/cgi-bin/invcgis/colorguide.cgi http://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp enjoy -
Those issues above still need to be addressed. I also have another ship to add: http://news.lugnet.com/pirates/?n=4259

Yes 7075 was and is cheap! The hulls are the least expensive hull parts, from both 7075 and 4768 The Durmstrang Ship, offered on bricklink for 20 cents. The sails for 7075 are also inexpensive, that's why I used them on the black pearl-lite. My attempt to make a kurt "detail level" sailing ship MOC with building INSTRUCTIONS at a low cost level (it's neat, you should build one just to see it!). I used the hulls with four middles on the RTS Legitor On "Integrating that stern piece" I knew that I had see that done somewhere, found it!: A very nice square-rigged sloop, let me check "MOCs sorted by type square-rigged sloop" no it's not there, I'll ask to have it added. Just my two cents.

Adding a post to link to my Tsar Cannon MOC it's not a 16lb-er, 32lb-er or a 48lb-er, NO it's a 1760 lb (800 kg) (that's the weight of the ball!) Cannon!! Maybe it could be indexed... click the pic:

One supersized Battle Cannon, do you want fries with that?
RTN LNA replied to RTN LNA's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks! Actually, that's the color of the green patina (rust if you want) formed when bronze (in this case) is weathered/exposed to air over a period of time. And I checked that colors available for the cannon barrel parts, like 3063 comes in both green and sand green. The interesting thing about the sand green 3063 part is that the only appearance of it was: SandGreen: 4 in 3450-1 - Statue of Liberty Sculpture (2000) for exactly this reason, The Statue of Liberty has a green patina!!! Also you are not likely, to make this MOC in these colors because of the cost of 40 sand green 3063s, bricklink Price Guide for the SandGreen 3063. Of coarse you could use less "weird" and less expensive colors... -
One supersized Battle Cannon, do you want fries with that?
RTN LNA replied to RTN LNA's topic in Pirate MOCs
First I should say that I have seen the Tsar Cannon in person this year (2008) when I was in Moscow and visited the Kremlin. Found a good picture with a view of the backend So I changed the CAD MOC a little: View of backend: I added a Turntable 2 x 2 Plate with a Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Long Towball so you could hitch a few (4 or 6) horses to it. enjoy -
Other 4a One supersized Battle Cannon, do you want frys with that? CAD MOC of Tsar Cannon This to make up for my "smart alec" post here. A quick CAD MOC of the Tsar Cannon. The only hard part was finding 'Wheel Spoked 7 x 7 x 2 & 2/3' (55817) I will not be building this, If you want to, reply and I'll give you the parts list and count. I am sure you can make it more decorative than my CAD drawing. enjoy

Just a heads up, I am a sailing ship modeler, but you might get a kick out of the fact that my newest MOC, a model of the Zavala has working Lego pneumatic side-paddle-wheel walking-beam steam engines! With adjustable valve gear timing. And I just uploaded video of the engines running, "very slowly" so you can see! Of coarse the thread is over on the pirates forum: The RTS Zavala Steamship-of-War enjoy EDIT: O... kay?!? Closing. -JINZO

You are incorrect, click on that photo, it's linked to what it really is.

You can read posts about the build tips of the RTS Zavala here. The links to the videos are posted here. There are "free" good (or better) "new" and original MOC ship ideas posted in this thread (read down through it!) here. enjoy

I got the Zavala filmed and uploaded to youtube A video walk along, and use of the ships wheel. I run the Lego pneumatic side-paddle-wheel walking-beam steam engines. enjoy

High praise, thanks. I was asked once: > And how’d Timmy slip into the ranks? :^p I replied that: "Actually (I guess) if you are time cruising, you would be where the action is, the texas navy makes sense, some what obscure, and thus fewer of those d#%@ time tourists crowding you out of the view! ;^) " enjoy kurt

Yes, I think I could, would ether of these do (the pictures are linked): Note: I found pictures with a person in them for scale. enjoy

Musing on what I saw/learned sorting the ship MOCs
RTN LNA replied to RTN LNA's topic in LEGO Pirates
As you might have noticed I am modeling the Republic of Texas Navy in the 1840s. So I understand having to have some focus, but it's also why I don't have the MOC building time to get to many of the ideas that I have thought of over the years, and it's clear to me now that I never will! I think I invent 2-3 times as many good ideas as I can build, on average! So this is an attempt to see if anyone wants them... I certainly understand building on "slow track" and LEGOs are only one of my hobbies! and mostly (for me) a winter one. You are also one of the exceptions! Surprise, surprise you replied to this thread. As I said "I am trying to help some of those out there who might like to do something of note." I guess what makes AFOLs and LUGs and the shows, work are the surprisingly "new" and different MOCs you see. Yes but I am glad you replied, because maybe the quiet reader will decide, to login and reply, because you did! And he (or she) is the one I am really after! I hope they even read this thread down to here! Please (yah you!) feel free to ask me any questions. In fact, questions that begin, "This may be a stupid question, but …" are devilishly effective. kurt -

Musing on what I saw/learned sorting the ship MOCs
RTN LNA replied to RTN LNA's topic in LEGO Pirates
The other ship MOCs listed above, as well as a number of notable steam punk ships, have been add to both the sorted and unsorted MOC indexs. Since I only got one post (maybe that only counts as 1/2) in reply to my MOC ideas. Then maybe something was wrong with the ship MOC ideas I chose to write about: Greek Trireme Polynesian Catamaran Maybe these were too old or too odd for the most of you, OK. I'll try one last time, and if I don't get any positive feedback, I'll stop wasting my, and your time. OK, so something small (well smaller) different ("new" as in yet see by anyone, here at least) that you could use (17th or 18th century) well... and one I'll like to see. How about: 3: Venetian Polacca cargo ship Three masted with large lateen hoisted on the foremast (which is slanted forward to accommodate the large lateen yard), The mainmast is square rigged and the mizzen mast is gaff or lateen rigged. COOL isn't it. Models exists I think you could build in with just 3 hull center sections, 2 if you want it to be really tubby. Note: you must slant forward the foremast! I can even tell you where you can get instructions for building many of the parts of a ship like this. NOW will I get any replies? I must assume some of you are slow to even try to build MOCs? all for now kurt
