It seems that the lego group hit the bullseye with this set. does anyone know who does designed it? -
8109 Tow truck Parts: 1115 new designed parts: no Gears: 26 Panels: 20 Instruction booklets: 3, 3 for model A (92 steps), online for model B (not yet online) Colours: Yellow, Red, Black, light grey Stickers: 19 Age: 10-16 Difficulty: easy-medium Building time: 5-6 hours Price at S@H: 89,99€ i want not lost much words in the beginning, simply start with Pictures from the building process. The 92 Steps in the building process make this beauty buildable for everyone. There are no techniques who are difficult to understand, altough some nice Ideas are available in the 8109. One of them is the mechanism of the towing fork at the rear end. The Fork will moved out by two 13L Gear racks, then a lever rotates the fork, during the complete fork moves out. before the motion comes to its end the fork is falling to the ground, till it a little bit later will lifted in the Air. Unfortunately the Power is not enough to lift up a bigger Vehicle like the 8071 Service truck The flatbed doesnt have this limitation. A bent liftarm (3x7) let it tilt and slide on a subframe, which is connected with the rear axles. If the flatbed is sliding back, the axles wll lifted up and the whole end of the Truck is coming down to the ground. The mechanism has enough power to lift the 8071 without a problem in the transport position. now some impressions of the whole truck Final conclusion: Ten years ago i had the 8109 Tow truck/lowloader declared as a Lego flagship of the year. Now iam only in love. Buy it, build it and have a lot of fun. more pics at Flickr and Brickshelf

[Review] 8071 Service Truck
efferman replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think i will post the review of the 8109 tomorrow. but first i must build it -
8071 Service Truck Parts: 593 new designed parts: no Gears: 18 Panels: 6 Instruction booklets: 4, 2 for model A (75 steps), 2 for model B(61 steps) Colours: Red, White, Dark bluish grey, Light grey, Blue Stickers: 21 Difficulty: easy Building time: 1-2 hours Price at S@H: 39,99€ The 8071 Service Truck is a oldschool cherrypicker on a white longnose truck with four wheels. The doors and the Hood could be opened, to take a look on the blue seats and the not working steering wheel. The 7L steering rack will be actuated by a 20 tooth gear above the rear bumper. The upperstructure is cotrolled by two 12 tooth bevel gears on the left and right side of the truck. The one on the Driver side controls the lift of the boom and the other the rotation. The rotation of the Turntable is damped by a additional 8 tooth gear on a blue cross axle bolt. The lifting of the boom is working by a wormgear/24 tooth Transmission and a bent liftarm 6x4. the first and second boom are dont working independent. so it is only one moving curve possible. Fully lifted is the boom ca.40cm high So far the service truck is a nice model with simple and comfortable solutions that fits good to a medium budget set. There is only one point which is a little bit uncomfortable: In real life the first function that will moved is the outrigger. but to move them on the 8071, you must Grab between turntable and working Basket. Final conclusion: for beginners: good looking model for beginners with a good assortment of parts and functions. for experts: very good Basement for much fun while you modify it.

Effermans Cranes
efferman replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
no, this little thing is a bit smaller than the unimog version 000_020 von efferman auf Flickr Hiab and palfinger? if you mean vehicle mounted knuckleboom cranes, i will say yes. But i am prefer the manufacturer Effer if have a idea for a non vehicle mounted crane, you will see it here too. at roamingstudio yes, sometimes i could need more x.5 links -
I want show in this thread some cranes in different types and sizes. my focus is on the part above the turntable and the movement of the booms to help you to build your own cranes. The First crane is a knuckleboom crane for Trucks with a width of 15 studs. The goal was that it fit on the new 8109 towing truck. So it should be not too fat in any dimensions. the part above the turntable needs only 8 studs from the vehicle length. In real this would be only 136 cm. now some pics from the folded crane the size makes it necessary to work with single pneumatic cylinders, so it is hard to get enough moving range without loosing too much lifting power. the first boom can move nearly 90° with a lever stroke of 3.5 studs (a L with 3x2 studs). The Second boom have the ability to move nearly 180°. The leverstroke is 1.5 Studs with two links of 3 studs and 2 studs. You will find the folder of this crane on Brickshelf and Flickr
