Atramor watches the Founders disappear into the clouds of spores, and at last steps out of the shadows beneath Rosier's vines to rejoin the party from his hiding place. " 'Higher powers?' " Atramor tosses the archdemon summonstone into the air briefly and catches it again, holding it aloft for a brief moment. "This is one of your sisters." He then stows the stone, and draws his claws. Atramor eyes the Founders. He swears he can see the glimmering dust under their gaunt skin now. He turns his head slightly to glance at Rosier, then moves back, and fixes his gaze on the six of them "Whatever ya' might've done. I think ya'd be doin' the Founders proud now." He looks sideways at the heroes hacking through an entire flank to reach them, and nods. "Get those arms off, mates. We'll get to the face in a bit." Order to come once we have some actions in.

Atramor slowly brings himself to his feet. The red lashes of a hundred thorny vines across his body close up, but leave his coat in tatters. He spits up a mouthful of some vile green spores intermingled with saliva. Taken aback by the fierceness of Rosier's response, he looks to either side to see the party's flanks laying down a serious counterattack. He grits his teeth. "Alright. Alright. Forget what I said. Everyone get yourselves ready. We just need to survive until the rest of the heroes can join us. 'Til then, we can't go down." He strayed over to the Golden Dragon and the Walking Mountain. The rogue's mouth fell open a bit when he saw the edges of both of them were fraying as though they were made of smoke. "You ain't long for this place, are ya'?" I could summon Archdemon and have all demons flee the battle right now. But seeing as we're trying to kill her, counterproductive. I should be Hastened (Smelling Salts) and Lucky (Kingpin). You may also want to edit my health to reflect Inspired. Can't believe it triggered only in the final battles. Also, Walking Mountain should be Encouraged while Erik (and Torald, if he was an original barbarian) should be Inspired. I'm still putting together one big battle order, so as far as I'm concerned we're all still part of the same big party. Can I assume Stuck-fast Sap doesn't apply to ranged weapons? Atramor sat up, eyes snapping open. In an instant he is frantically grabbing at his shirt. "What- I don't- oh, HELL!" he yelps, jumping up to avoid the roots snaking around the cavern floor. He backs up into Althior and Hoke. "Damn. I mean...damn, mates, I thought for a second- hell, wouldn't that've been 'bout the most embrassin' thing?" he laughs nervously. "Well, that worked. Damn...that worked." He shook his head, bringing forth his Mythril Claws from inside his sleeves as Rosier slams vines between the heroes, separating them, leaving the most experienced of them to deal with the archdemon herself. He grits his teeth. "ALRIGHT! THIS IS IT, MATES! NO TURNIN' BACK! GIVE IT WHAT YA' GOT!" Atramor whips the Archdemon Summonstone one last time, channeling 175 Mana into it from the back row. The rogue nearly crumples as the demon's massive shadow slides over the room, mirroring its demonic twin sister. Atramor watches, briefly, before pushing himself back up to his feet, gulping down an Elixir fast as he can manage. Weather becomes Dim for three rounds, everyone deals only darkness-elemental damage as long as the weather is Dim. "Benji, sleep bomb! Let that damn weed have a dream of her own, everyone focus on the right arm! We need that thing off before anyone else gets here! Front row, mates!" Atramor inhaled a long, deep breath, and let it all out in a single, exhausted sigh, and shut his eyes briefly, mentally steeling himself. "I don't think there's a door to walk through, mate." The rogue opened his eyes. "I dunno 'bout the rest of you all, but there's one surefire way I know of to wake up from dreams. Good ones are overrated anyhow. If I'm wrong, this is 'bout the dumbest way I could ever go out, but, well." Atramor unsheathed his Mythril Claws. "Alright. Here goes." He awkwardly lifted them up to his own chest. "Been a while since lookin' death in the face. Should be fun." He paused. "Okay mates. This is it. Ya' got any words of encouragement, I'd love to hear 'em." He wavered. "Dyric gets my Decamon card collection if I bite it." Atramor stretched his fingers under the claws. "Matthias can have these damn summonin' rocks." He stalled once more. "Promise ya' name a drink after me. Ya' know, if this goes badly." The rogue closed his eyes once again. "Pretty sure I owe Nyx money, too. Boomin'ham, make sure she gets that. Damn, this is harder than I woulda-" He opened his eyes, shook his head, and broke his awkward pose for a moment to finish his rum before resuming it. "I've also always kinda had a thing for Ellaria. Not relevant, but hell with it. Oh, and if I seriously die, someone take care of my bird." Atramor stabbed himself in the chest with both Mythril Claws.

"Still, they ain't gonna be able to tell it half as well as I could...if I remembered the damn thing." " 'Ppreciate it," remarked Atramor, catching the rum and taking a swig just as soon as he was able to lift it to his lips. He turned his other hand over a few times, trying to recall details about the burn scars on it. "Will do," nodded the rogue, lifting his bottle to Karie as she crutched over to the exit. "Careful, third cobblestone from the door's a bit..." Atramor paused, and coughed, swallowing another few mouthfuls of rum. It hardly seemed to do anything for the dryness of his throat. "Ah. Sorry. Third stone from the door's a bit loose. Anyone else feelin' like they've inhaled half of Azzurat? Last time I was in that temple it was musty as all hell, not dry like a corpse." "Relax, mate. Look at these scars, how'd we get these if this was a dream? Would I want to dream I got fried like an egg?" Atramor chuckled.

"....eh. Nevermind. I'm sure it'll be fine." "Really though, mates, we've dealt with the entire town watch, the paladin order, some pixie dust ghosts, an army of dragons, and we're 'bout to go up against an archdemon in its own cushy little pocket of fairyland." "If we're gonna tack 'political endorsements' on the end there, at least wait 'til I've had a few drinks. It's been a long day." That's just me. Doesn't feel quite right to bring the civilian NPCs into the final final battle after their goal has pretty much been accomplished, plus we won't have to worry about them getting killed. That and I think just having the heroes and Founders around the end makes a lot more sense.

Atramor pointedly looked away as he disembarked the ship and inhaled the last of his Smelling Salts. "Aye. All we need to do is get to the Hall. I'm sure at least a few of us remember how to get to that damn Temple..." The rogue looked up towards the city of Eubric outlined against the sky as he clambered out onto the dock, inhaling deeply. Truth be told, he almost wasn't expecting to make it back from Fort Freedom. Would've been a hell of a way to go. Then again...he'd never passed up the chance to do battle with an archdemon. And this one nearly destroyed Heroica. Atramor turned his attention to the civilians- Bellanotte, Waldorf, and the rest of the non-Heroicans. "This is it, mates. I'm not exaggeratin' when I say we're walkin' into hell. We made it outta the suicide mission, but now is the time for ya' to run off. Ya've saved Eubric from itself. You're as much heroes as the rest of us, but if things go badly for us, Eubric's still in one piece. There'll be rebuildin' to do, and...well, all sorts of post-war nonsense, but my point is, your fight is done. Get outta here, scatter so the Bonies don't find ya', and if anyone asks, tell 'em we're servin' a fairy eviction notice to a nosy archdemon in our haunted basement. We make it back out alive, all the drinks are on me." His mouth twitched into a smirk. "After all, ya'll are heroes, and everyone knows heroes drink free." He swiveled to face the remainder of the party - all Heroicans at one point or another. "We got our target. Ya' got any final thoughts for these people, now's the time."

"Huh. Disappointed we didn't think of that..." "Dunno who Kayla is, but...Patricia did send us halfway 'round the world to rescue some of her guardsmen. I've known her for a damn long while, and she is a cold, menacin' lady, and she really screwed us over today, but damn if that hard line ain't exactly what Eubric needed, everyone come before here was in the pocket of criminals and the Wolfgang. Moral authority ain't her strong suit, but she's the best when it comes to takin' down the serious bad guys, but that's 'bout where it ends...Hel, I can't even wrap my head 'round all the changes that are gonna have to happen after this...." Atramor shook his head. "We'll see where she stands when all this done, and figure out where to go from there. Damn, I sound like a diplomat..." "Glad we can agree on this much." Atramor looked around, and climbed halfway up the stairs to the outer wall. "Alright, mates, we're almost done here! One last thing we need to take care of, and that's screwin' over the Bonies! No offense, Bonies! Sailors, get over here, we need one of ya' to each group of three heroes! Show us where the powder is and show us where to lay it down! We need to hit this thing at its foundations if we're gonna take it down quick, so while we're makin' it snappy, everyone else aboard the Magpie! Can't fit, get a damn dragon! Archdemons ain't gonna kill themselves!" And with that, he hopped down, and did just that. "We'll have to send off some'a those with us when we get there. This...ain't gonna be a fight kids are gonna wanna be 'round for." "Gotta be honest though, it's the part after that gonna sting the worst. "I think I saw 'em shootin' at the wyverns earlier. I think they might be friendly." I can't go back and find the specific post but I'm pretty sure it was in one of the battle descriptions. Atramor crossed his arms and looked into the churning solitude of the sea for a while, while the Founders processed this odd turn of events, scratching his chin...and at last, after some thought, he turned. He handed the Miracleworker the folded Robes of the Prophet with all of the Doomsayer's things with it. It took him a moment for him to try and say anything. He could hardly wrap his head around the Founders' situation. He shifted the fabric of the garb to show the shimmer of fairie dust still clinging to it. "He was utterly convinced he was helpin' Eubric. If that means anythin'." The rogue went silent for a moment. The battle had not turned out the way he'd expected. Every sign pointed toward this being a conflict over the soul of Heroica. Then again...absolute last-minute peace talks were something of a Heroican specialty. "A lotta people died 'cuz of what you did. I'll be the first one to admit Eubric ain't perfect. But this ain't the way to change it. Hell, I was willin' to put up with an actual government to see if things would get any better. But your way...it was too far." "I dunno what ya' are. I don't think ya' deserve to get off so easily for what's been done, and I got no reason to forgive ya' for it." Atramor paused. "But maybe ya' can give us one. We can get to Rosier. Doorway to her world's right under Eubric. Ya' don't like what ya' are? Come with us, and ya' can tell her so to her face."

Atramor turned and waved down at many heroes as he could get the attention of. Whether they saw him or not, they all seemed to notice the battle had halted. Then he approached the Founders, looking about as unsure as he felt. They had been prepared for a last stand. Not a parley. But he wasn't exactly going to complain. "More'n happy to stop the fightin', but Dyric's got the right of it." He crossed his arms. "We need everyone you've captured. I don't give a damn who you think they are or what they've done," explained the rogue shortly, waving a hand both flippantly and dismissively. "They're not threats right now and I think they'll be more concerned 'bout their families, aye?" He jerked his head back at Bellanotte. "You let them go, and we'll have a talk. There's a lot we gotta go over. A hell of a lot." "You've got no idea, Lady," mumbled Atramor, looking a whole lot less...dynamic now that peace talks had started.

    Heroica RPG General Discussion

Yep. Biggest problem with the system. When enemies are purely reactive it boils down to how well-crafted they are by the GM and how out-of-the-box players can think. Sometimes it's really amusing or fascinating but the majority of the time it's just work, for both parties. I forget when, but at some point I started looking at battles like their own puzzles. I really dislike looking at it that way, but that's what the mechanics encourage. Hopefully one of many things that wouldn't be a problem in whatever follow-up there is. It was actually this line of thinking that lead to the unfinished (again, sorry questers ) boss battle of my last quest: an enemy that can act for themselves.

He then turns his attention to Arthur and Throlar, both adamantly pleading with the Founders. He openshis mouth to say something - then the unexpected happens. Atramor was halfway into a sprint towards the remaining enemies on the wall when he realized Boomingham, Arthur, and Pretzel were throwing themselves down into the Harbor; it took him a moment of terrible realization to understand why. "Oh. Uh. Hell." The rogue whirled around to face Karie as she assumed command of the wall, and then at the rest of the forces, split between the few sailors left and the Veterans anchored in the sand. He grit his teeth. "Aye. That'll have to be enough. Kill these clowns then give these Founders as many shots as ya' can, just from up here. This is gonna hurt, for everyone involved." Atramor hopped down into the Harbor, followed closely by the Archangel. After landing hard in the sand, he stood, brushing the fine earth of the sea off his coat and adjusting his hat once more. Well, if this went bad...at least the smell of the ocean filled the air, and he was surrounded by allies. Not so bad for a last stand, if it came to that. "SOMEONE DOWN HERE DROP A SMOKE BOMB! ARCHERS, CASTERS, IF YA' CAN'T TAKE A HIT, GET UP ON THAT WALL! EVERYONE ELSE, HIT 'EM WITH EVERYTHIN' YA' GOT!" People are probably going down in the Harbor but we're going to have to take that hit to reposition everyone. Atramor catches sight of the tiny paladin paralyzed with fear, and puts a hand on his shoulder. "Relax, kid. I've seen bigger. If it helps, picture 'em as a buncha' rags full of dust." He shakes some more pixie dust out of the Doomsayer's cloak. "We'll do everythin' we damn well can to get outta this. But I ain't gonna lie, it'll be tough." He looks between the Founders and Petaldan, and ducks down onto a knee for a moment, pointing out the Lady Luck. "See that lady, mate? Everythin' I do now, every quest I've been on, is 'cuz she made it so that rogues can be heroes too. But of course...that ain't her. None of 'em are real. You keep that in mind, kid, alright? They're nothing. And if ya' wanna prove that to 'em...you take that tiger balm ya' got there - I love usin' that stuff - and you dump that crap all over 'Lady Luck' over there." He straightened up. "Those ghosts think they're the heroes of this story, kid. But this book is ours."
