Just made the plunge into LEGO Trains!

Kyphur, please see this list I put together awhile ago to help you do so. After spending a small fortune collecting MISB 10020s, 10022s, 10025s and completing my Super Chief I used the list I compiled to construct more 10022 cars using the cheaper 10025 cars. Last I checked 10025s were about half the cost, probably more than that now, of 10022.

    REVIEW: 7939 Cargo Train

Received this set today and was bummed when I saw that the train base plate for the engine was severely warped, scuffed, and had gouged edges. I requested a new one through Lego. The other loose pieces were fine. As always, more effort needs to be invested in packaging the instructions and sticker sheets, as mine were badly bent, but fortunately still usable. I've got the engine assembled now and it looks better than I thought it would (lots of stickers though!). The on/off mechanism is clever. I was also surprised by the size of the remote (my first), a lot smaller than it appears to be in pictures (as if it were intended for a child's hands, go figure ).

Perhaps this is the one you are referring to? Holds 15 figs for $15, available through US S@H

I posted this in the Train Tech forum but thought I would share the news here as well: the cargo train and level crossing are now available through S@H in the US. Cargo Train: $180 Level Crossing: $20

  6. The vast majority of mine are this way as well. Furthermore, what would be considered their pelvis is flexible, if you hold the base and press down/wiggle their head side to side, you can see their hip joints flex left and right. Agreed. Reportedly series 2 will still have barcodes while series 3 will not. Visited a few TRUs as my local LEGO store was out of stock, and it was interesting to see how different locations sold them. One store had the box in with the regular sets (one lonely magician left when I got to it), another had them behind the customer service counter with a limit of 5, and another kept them behind the registers in the electronics department, with no limit. Between the 3 TRUs I visited I was able to score 13 of the 16 (missing nurse, cowboy, and wrestler). Not bad, but $2.50 adds up quick.

    2010 Train Sets

Double VIP points and 2 of the new train sets are available. Unfortunately for my wallet this is more incentive to spend. I'll probably pass on this one but will strike when the level crossing and cargo train are added (soon I hope). If the passenger train is $130 I'm hoping the cargo train will be kept to $150 (given it has 170 more parts and better track selection). Wishful thinking Read in the description that the passenger train can handle up to eight cars. I think that's pretty respectable. I hope LEGO releases the new PF train motor for individual sale soon, those RC ones are garbage.

    REVIEW: 3221 City Truck

Interesting, my set has the old style panels w/o the side support. My only knock on this set, aside from the sheer length of it, is the fact that the panels leave an unsightly gap at the back of the cab. The gap is somewhat covered up by the smoke stacks and may not look as bad if your set includes the new panels.

    Is Green Grocer gone?

I stand corrected. It is indeed under hard to find items (I looked in the exclusives category, where it was before). I just got into the modular series and cannot believe the secondhand prices ($300+) of Cafe Corner, so I am happy to have purchased Green Grocer given its seemingly near fate. Eager to add the others.

    Is Green Grocer gone?

Lucky me I guess, I bought it yesterday from my nearby LEGO store. Buy 'em up before they reach Cafe Corner prices! S@H for the US no longer has Green Grocer listed under exclusive and hard to find items, but Grand Emporium has been added with a scheduled release date of February 20th.

    REVIEW: 3179 Repair Truck

I was also skeptical about this set, but when placing a recent S@H order I couldn't resist the urge to add it to my cart. After putting it together, I'm glad I bought it. The art on the front of the box does not do the set justice. I would have photographed the truck from the passenger side (with the boom extended), highlighting the two compartments as well as the boom.

    2010 Train Sets

I think you just nailed it. If you look at the box art of the station you can make out two white poles extending from the top of the overpass, with a blur of red underneath them. Oh well, cargo train is a must buy, just have to keep waiting and hold out some hope on the passenger train.

    2010 Train Sets

No, but those lights do not show up on any of the other boxes for City 2010 sets. Happy to speculate further... The green grass and blue sky are consistent with the coloring on the box art of the passenger train, leading me to continue to believe the passenger train is elevated. Also looks like a good place to add the train station (just look at how tall that thing is). I don't see any other sets on there with that much grass artwork/background. However, the "rails" are red, and don't appear to be a standard dual rail setup so I don't know what to make of that. Wish that gal wasn't so strategically located! Squinting even harder at the high res picture from I Scream Clone here, looks like there is a white support underneath the left side. Everyone sees what they want to believe and may consider this all wishful thinking on my part, but frankly, I'm not too worked up about the passenger train. Just excited to see new stuff in the train line and question what it all could be. Now let the speculation continue...

    2010 Train Sets

Can't wait to get my hands on the new cargo train. Is it just me or does the box art for the red passenger train appear to have elevated track? I think we're getting the elevated passenger train from the public transportation center in the TRU poll, and the yellow LEGO truck is along the same lines as the one seen in the truck stop option (just like the Octan tanker scheduled for release, which also appeared in that potential set). I wouldn't get too hung up on price just yet, we all love trains and know that if we want to continue to see them we have to buy them. Great news all around, looking forward to more detailed pictures.

    Super Chief vs. BNSF

Better yet, here is a pre-existing poll of the exact same topic started by TheBrickster.
  16. I see, thanks for clearing that up Peterab, that makes perfect sense. I sometimes see it on eBay with the instructions included, but they are separate (not in the box) as you described.
  17. Thanks, as stated I already had gone to LEGO.com for them. I was just wondering if it was normal that my box did not contain the printed manual.
  18. I'm glad Cwetgo brought this up, as I just received the set from an eBay purchase. The link printed in the instruction manual for all 30 models (www.legofactory.com/buildinginstructions) is no longer valid and www.legofactory.com is now DesignByMe. It's a shame LEGO made the switch and forgot about those of us buying the set secondhand (or those of us who didn't download all 30 lxf files when they were available). Also, my set did not come with printed instructions for the main model. Is that normal? I used the pdf file available from LEGO.com and ended up building the crocodile after much deliberation and I'm happy I did as it looks great (I had already downloaded the lxf file of the GP looking locomotive and LDD in anticipation of buying the set). Thanks to Mr. Lego Bildur for getting them up. However, I think LEGO ought to remedy this problem by fixing the link provided in the manual, so that others are able to build the alternate models. I doubt I'll be taking the croc apart anytime soon though.

I saw this on brickshelf and for a minute had a sense of deja-vu. Could prove interesting to see who comes out ahead. Difficult for me to decide on which I like better. I will say your stickers are awesome, proportions look accurate, and from a purist perspective like that you mounted the boatslides legally.

    TTCE: CFNR GP15

ENTERED I am happy to present my entry in the contest, a California Northern GP15-1. These locomotives come through my town 6 days a week, so I see them on a regular basis. There are 11 units, numbered 103-113, with the majority of them being ex CNW. My model is most closely based on #108, it is 34 studs long and seats one minifig. More pictures on my flickr account here. Entry Pic Another comparison shot: A little about the CFNR from wikipedia: The California Northern Railroad (reporting mark CFNR) is one of several Class III short-line railroad companies owned by RailAmerica, Inc. It operates over Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) tracks (now Union Pacific Railroad) under a long-term lease. More here. More prototype pictures can be found at rrpicturearchives Thanks for looking

Thanks for your feedback awwsum, I definitely tried to bring out the details as best I could. I suppose I could have used the dark green as seen in the BNSF, but I feel the regular green is a closer match. Seeing these engines up close, in person, and in the sun I didn't think twice about the color. As far as 6 versus 8 wide, I prefer 6 wide, but to each his own.

    OLD TRU Exclusive set poll

Here is the link to the poll, originally from April. However, I do not recall TRU ever announcing which set won. Perhaps they are running it again? EDIT: According to this article from BrickJournal the voting closed April 24th. However, as YG-49 has pointed out, several of the drawings have already become sets.

    City 2010

Agreed on the tanker, I've been hoping for a remake of set 6594. A must buy. I could also see the trailer being converted into a nice tanker for a train as well, just add 4 sets of train wheels and some couplers and you're off.
  24. Having recently purchased the entire Sante Fe line in MISB condition, I thought I would use it as a reference to compile some lists that may be helpful to the community (and your wallet). Following is the list originally complied by Dfenz in 2007 for converting 3 sets of 10025 to the 3 versions of 10022. I have modified it to read left to right, in the order you would add the parts to a BrickLink wanted list (type part number, select color, and then enter quantity). I have also cross checked and cross referenced this list against my sets and BrickLink inventories, and have discovered several discrepancies, noted with an asterisk (*). Also, the -1, -2, and -3 imply 10022-1, 10022-2, 10022-3. The Original List Part #, Color, Qty, Description 4459 Black 4 Technic, pin 4449 Brown 1 Minifig, utensil briefcase 4079 Brown 13 Minifig, utensil seat 2x2 3666 Dark Grey 6 Plate 1x6 3460 Dark Grey 9 Plate 1x8 2420 Dark Grey 3 Plate 2x2 corner 3020 Dark Grey 3 Plate 2x4 3031 Dark Grey 6 Plate 4x4 30357 Dark Grey 2 Plate, round corner 3x3 2921 Light Grey 6 Brick, modified 1x1 with handle 4070 Light Grey 6 Brick, modified 1x1 with headlight 6081 Light Grey 12 Brick, modified 2x4x1 1/3 curved top 3063 Light Grey 12 Brick, round corner 2x2 macaroni 4864b Light Grey 9 Panel 1x2x2 open studs 3023 Light Grey 5* Plate 1x2 3666 Light Grey 16 Plate 1x6 3022 Light Grey 11 Plate 2x2 4081b Light Grey 2 Plate, modified 1x1 with clip light 2817 Light Grey 4 Plate, modified 2x2 with hole 3040 Light Grey 2 Slope 45 2x1 3700 Light Grey 1 Technic, Brick 1x2 with hole 2877 Pearl LG 68* Brick, modified 1x2 with grill (78 in -1, 64 in -2, 76 in -3) 3899 Red 4 Minifig, utensil cup 3063 Trans-Clear 4 Brick, round corner 2x2 macaroni 4864b Trans-Clear 35* Panel 1x2x2 open studs (20 in -1, 17 in -2, 16 in -3) 4073 Trans-Green 2 Plate, round 1x1 Plate 4073 Trans-Red 1 Plate, round 1x1 Plate 4073 Trans-Yellow 2* Plate, round 1x1 Plate(4 in -1, 3 in -2, 4 in -3) 2362b White 4 Panel 1x2x3 open studs 3022 White 2 Plate 2x2 3021 White 7 Plate 2x3 3020 White 9 Plate 2x4 3660 White 2 Slope, inverted 45 2x2 6936 White 2 Tap 1x2 with dual handles 32000 White 8 Technic, Brick 1x2 with holes 3069b White 12 Tile 1x2 with groove 2431 White 4 Tile 1x4 *Discrepancies: 3023 Light Grey 5 Plate 1x2 (*one leftover from 10022-2 conversion) -Dfenz was correct in stating you need 5, but I wanted to clarify how he got that number: You will need 3 for 10022-1, and 3 for 10022-3, however, you will have one leftover from converting a 10025 into 10022-2, bringing the total down to 5. 2877 Pearl LG 68* Brick, modified 1x2 with grill (78 in -1, 64 in -2, 76 in -3) -Dfenz originally listed 46 needed, a difference of 22 from what I figured (78+64+76=218 - 150 [50 per set of 10025] = 68. After checking my lists and inventories, it appears that he was counting 22 that were left over from assembling a 10025 into a baggage car. Hence, if you already own a 10025 in baggage car form (on top of the 3 sets you bought to make your 10022) you will only need to purchase 46 more pearl light gray bricks, otherwise its 68. 4864b Trans-Clear 35* Panel 1x2x2 open studs (20 in -1, 17 in -2, 16 in -3) -originally listed 29 needed, a difference of 6 from what I figured (20+17+16=53 – 18 [6 per set of 10025] = 35. Again, he was counting 6 you would have left over from 10025 in baggage car form. The same baggage car that is donating the 22 pearl bricks to your 10022s will also be donating the 6 left over trans-clear panels. If you don’t own this car, then you will need 35. 4073 Trans-Yellow 2* Plate, round 1x1 Plate(4 in -1, 3 in -2, 4 in -3) -originally listed 4 needed, but because of extras in the 10025s (3 total per set) you will only need 2. (4+3+4=11 – 9 [3 per 10025] = 2 needed. The Left-Over List I have seen some posts asking what parts you will have left over after assembling the 5 different models of the Sante Fe line. After I built my sets, I bagged and inventoried the leftover parts, which provided me with the following list. This may not be that handy, but by doing this I was able to check it against the BrickLink inventory, and figure out what parts are used in each of the 3 variations of 10022 (which will bring me to the final list further down the page). A side note: you should also have 6 left over light grey 2 x 6 plates because you were smart and replaced those plates on the bottom of the cars with tiles, to clear the tracks and keep your train motors happy 10025-1 (#606 Baggage Car) Part#, Color, Qty, Description 4865 Brown 2 Panel 1 x 2 x 1 3021 Dark Gray 1 Plate 2 x 3 2431 Dark Gray 2 Tile 1 x 4 4162 Dark Gray 2 Tile 1 x 8 3005 Light Gray 4 Brick 1 x 1 2877 Pearl LG 22 Brick, Modified 1 x 2 with Grill 4864b Trans-Clear 6 Panel 1 x 2 x 2 - However, this would be a little more time consuming, as there are more variables and possibilities. Hopefully this is correct, has made sense, and will be of great help to you in collecting one of Lego’s finest train collections. Frank

    Introduction

Hello everyone, My name is Frank, I'm in my mid-twenties, and reside in California. I joined back in March, and have been hanging around (lurking) on an almost daily basis. Working on a MOC for category 2 of the train contest, which has prompted me to introduce myself. I've never been one to post much on forums, but that may change here on Eurobricks. A little bit about me, taken from my Brickset profile: Themes I like: Town, Train, and 2006+ City Favorite set: 6542 Launch & Load Seaport (a Christmas gift from my parents in '91) First set: 6528 Sand Storm Racer My Obsession/Dark age: My love for LEGO was reignited by two boys my girlfriend babysits. They had a few sets, I bought them some, and then started buying some sets of my own, starting with 2007 City and set 7733. I discovered Brickset and started finding out what I had missed out on. Luckily, what I had missed was the World City line and <insert that tiresome argument> pieces; I was glad my dark age came at a time in which LEGO was in a dark age of their own. I began rebuilding the sets from my childhood that I still had, buying the sets I never got as a child, and collecting the newer sets that appealed to me in the City theme. Most recently, the Emerald Night has stimulated an interest in trains, prompting me to collect the realistic train models (complete Sante Fe line and BNSF w/intermodal cars). I am slowly working on gathering a layout using PF and RC track (cost being a large prohibitive factor). Bricklink, eBay, TRU, and the LEGO store have put a hurt on my wallet, but I truly enjoy the hobby and don't mind being labeled an AFOL. Happy to be a part of a community with a shared passion for LEGO.
