    Mystery on the Excelsior

    Conclusion - It's Over!

The Excelsior finally touches down on the Alpha Centauri colony's spaceport, at last landing. Several Space Police officers board the ship and put Ezra into handcuffs while Alfie is removed by the Space Coroner.

"I can honestly say I have no recollection of the crimes I'm accused of." Ezra says.

"Tell it to the Space Judge." an officer says.

"You'll have plenty of time to recall those memories with an Amnesiagone dosage." Grace adds.

"But wait, didn't anyone help me? Who else are you going to arrest?"

"Yeah!" someone shouted from the crowd. "The questions hinted that other people helped, so who is it?"

"Clearly it's Gabriella!" Emily said. "Always being sneaky!"

"No, it had to have been Chef Noah!" Charlie added.

    "It was Jack!"

    "It was George!"

    "Well, who was it?"

"I don't know if I can say for sure. The evidence we have against certain people is all circumstantial. All we know for sure is that Ezra was the murderer and that he may have been helped." Grace replied

"Guess we'll find out in a few moments, eh?" the officer added.

"Don't break the fourth wall." Grace said.

    1) The motive - why was Alfie murdered?

Answer: Alfie was murdered by a technologies company that was eager to stop him from releasing his replicator product before they could.

Correct Responses: Kristel, Waterbrick Down, Trekkie, Tariq j, Lord Duvors

    2) The murderer - who murdered Alfie?

Ezra murdered Alfie with the teapot, first breaking it over his head and then stabbing him with a shard that had come off.

Correct Responses: Darkdragon, Waterbrick Down, Trekkie

    3) Did the murderer have any assistance, and if so, from who?

Ezra received help from Sophie Young, who provided the teapot without knowing who the murderer was. Arthur Allan also helped by cutting main power to the ship from engineering.

Correct Responses: None (DD and WBD got it right for themselves obviously but they don't count)

I must apologize that this game went on intolerably too long, to the point where I think it's singlehandedly killed interest in these types of games for quite some time. I originally wanted to host this a few months before I did, but it was delayed. By the time it came around to host it, work had started up again, and I could only check/reply to people during my planning period or when I got home, which slowed the game down considerably. I thought I would be able to host while working, but I bit off way more than I could chew. Mafia games you can sort of let run on their own as long as you check back every couple hours to update the vote count. Mystery games like this require constant host interaction. In hindsight, I should have known better. It got to the point where we were too far in and I didn't want to pause the game and have it end up in the "unfinished games" category. So I kept it going and eventually there were only a few regulars posting. I can't blame people for losing interest and it's my fault entirely for that, I didn't keep the game at a tight enough pacing. This game started back in September(!) but it feels like it's been going on for much longer than that.

I think people could tell that I was trying to hurry it along by a certain point. I severely underestimated the attention that a host needs to provide to mystery games. With that said, I did enjoy the stellar roleplay that people had and I did also like some of the private actions that people sent to me. Hinckley turned Gabriella into a psychopath, which wasn't planned but it did make it more interesting. Some people even thought Gabriella was behind it all somehow. Feel free to share your role PM's as well and discuss the game.

I think someone else needs to host something as soon as possible.

Grace would like to go examine Mr. Peck's wounds to see which one killed him.

It would likely have been the stab wound with the teapot fragment.

"Yes, however they can only be activated with two members of the command staff giving approval or the ship's computer recognizing a catastrophic disaster."

    Mystery on the Excelsior

Chapter Six - The Final Chapter

After several days at high speed pushing safety limits, the Excelsior was finally nearing Alpha Centauri. The group had been nervously with each other attempting to enjoy the last moments of a vacation that had turned into a nightmare. Meanwhile, the ship that had been shadowing them had vanished as the Excelsior neared Alpha Centauri, clearly not receiving what they had intended.

    Final Questions:

To win the game, you must answer the following questions, correctly or semi-correctly.

    1) The motive - why was Alfie murdered?

    2) The murderer - who murdered Alfie?

    3) Did the murderer have any assistance, and if so, from who?

Please send these answers in your role PM. If you have any questions, feel free to ask there or here.

This will not be a normal chapter, however you can still ask questions of other players, converse with NPCs, and do general searching of the immediate lounge if you wish.

    Rules

    1) Every player has received a character with a backstory and information that may be exclusive to them knowing. You can feel free to roleplay the character and flesh them out more. Mystery games are often primarily role-playing games, don’t forget that. There is no such thing as a “fluff post” or anything to the like. Throw out any conceptions you have used in mafia games. Feel free to make the character yours beyond what I've given.

    2) There is no voting of players in this game. Providing something extreme, all twelve characters will last until the end of the game, at which time they must attempt to “solve” the mystery. You win if you are able to correctly solve the mystery, or if you get close enough to do so. This will happen in the final chapter of the game. You’ll receive several questions and then you have to answer them and explain. If you get it right, you win. If not, well…

    3) A chapter will last as long as necessary for the story with no given or set end time. This is, of course, different to mafia games where days last about 72 hours. Keep in mind that mystery games often run longer than mafia games. If you commit to signing up and playing, make sure you can participate for at least a few months.

    4) There is no PMing in the game without my permission. For example, you can say “I wish to speak to this person privately” and I may give you approval to do so.

    5) You must search for clues. The room that you enter will be described to you and will also usually have a photo to accompany the description. This means that clues typically won’t be out in the open for you to see. If you want to search a room or area for clues, you cannot type:

“I want to look for suspicious or hidden objects in this room."

Rather, you must specify what you want to do. For example:

“I want to open the drawers of the cabinet.”

You can only submit one action at a time until I reply to it, but anyone can request a search of something at the same time as you. For example, if you ask for a search of a closet, you must wait until I reply to it to submit another action. However other players can request searches of other parts of the room.

    6) Please don’t edit your posts. There’s no real penalty to it, but it might make you look more suspicious and I would appreciate not doing so. If you’re worried about a typo, double check your post.

    7) Do not talk about the game outside of the threads!

    8) This is still a game of deception. Players have things that they wish to hide. If you have any questions about your character, feel free to ask via PM!

    9) Make sure any actions that you take are in italics and on a separate line so I can see them. If I miss it for some reason, just quote it and yell at me in another post.

    10) When it’s time to end the chapter, you can decide where you’d like to go next in the form of a vote. Voting will last 24 hours strictly. The location with the most votes will win. You’ll be given a map/layout of the ship as well as some choices that you can explore. You can always return to a previous location if you wish.

    11) I know we'll all be good rule-followers, but I'll ask everyone to adhere to these rules. Breaking them too frequently could see you removed from the game

Grace will use her datapad to interface with the console in an attempt to see how it was tampered with.

The console appears to have been hacked by someone who would know what they are doing with the intention to turn off main power. There's no fingerprints that are easily identified besides the ones found of Gabriella and the Captain.

  5. 3 hours ago, Lord Duvors said:

"No," Grace says through the doorway, "But I think those constitute evidence of a crime. Not the one we're investigating, but still. Keep those separate from everything else."

Grace would like to use her datapad to interface with the personal computer and examine it for... anything really.  Also, would I be right in assuming that we can still revisit previous areas?

Yes, I'll give you a few revisits. The final chapter will see you in the lounge anyway. You can do final searches there while you submit the end questions to try to win the game. Also what exactly are you looking for? The personal computer is mostly full of engineering schematics and personal e-letters with Gabriella's cousin who lives on the Lunar colony.

I would like to strip naked because these are my quarters and I can do what I please here.

I'll take a shower while I'm at it.

Gabriella takes a shower, because why not?

Noah would like to stand in the bathroom doorway and watch.

Noah tries to watch but -

Grace would like to drag Noah out of the room.

    Is dragged away by Grace.

On 1/20/2021 at 12:34 AM, Waterbrick Down said:

Arthur checks the pockets of the uniforms in the closet. "Anything on those personal documents?"

The pockets have a variety of items from various passenger cabins throughout the ship and throughout the many trips that Gabriella has been engineer on. They range from simple stationary to expensive jewels.

    On 1/20/2021 at 2:40 PM, Trekkie99 said:

"He looked the type didn't he?"

I'd like to check the personal papers

The personal papers are mostly just Gabriella's honorable discharge papers from the United Earth Navy and some certificates of sorts.

  7. On 1/17/2021 at 8:26 AM, Trekkie99 said:

I'd like to inspect the small box of trinkets

The trinkets are various pieces of jewelry and other assorted items like that.

18 hours ago, Waterbrick Down said:

    Arthur will check the cabinet.

The cabinet has a bunch of clothes in it, including several engineers overalls that are mostly clean.

17 hours ago, Lord Duvors said:

    Grace will examine the desk.

The desk has a personal computer on it as well as a few momentos. There's also a few personal papers inside the drawers.

    14 hours ago, jimmynick said:

"Various electrical devices, eh? I'll take a look at them."

Emily examines electrical devices in all states of repair.

Emily investigates the devices. They're mostly engine components that are attempts to boost engine efficiency.

  8. 20 hours ago, jimmynick said:

    Emily opens the dresser.

"By the way everyone, I really think George is in some deep Bantha poodoo so I think it would be worthwhile to pile into my room for a search."

"Did I successfully pick up any fingerprints? Can Grace Jones analyze them?"

The dresser is filled with various clothes as well as some personal items that Arthur has kept stored. Included is Arthur's prized collection of Space Baseball cards. There's also what appears to be a shoebox.

Also, you did pick up some fingerprints off the paper. Your untrained eyes and also lack of equipment can't tell if the fingerprints are any different.

  9. Arthur's room is on the second floor. The crew quarter cabin is a smaller version of the guest quarters. Arthur's room has a fairly nice desk with a computer console on it. Posted on the wall are some holo-photographs and a poster of the Excelsior. The bed is neatly made and the room looks more lived-in than the guest quarters, probably because this is Arthur's home away from home while he is on the duty roster. The bathroom is significantly smaller and there is no closet like in the guest quarters. Instead, there's a large dresser and a wardrobe on the other side of the room.

As a note, there will be two more room searches after this, so make your choices count. The final chapter will be up some time after that in which you'll try to solve the mystery.
