LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 20. Rumors and discussion
tafkatb replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Pretty cool that after very gradually inching toward parity over the past few years, there's finally a gender-balanced series. I think the piñata kid, hip-hop dancer, rocket scientist, and definitely the keytar player are my must-haves, and maybe the green brick, if only because I missed out on the blue and red ones from Series 18 and it looks like a new hairpiece that could be nice for updating Newt Scamander. -
Huigberts Builds mentioned that the Otto hairpiece looks like a good fit for Bert in the Sesame Street set.

Don't hold your breath - everything turning up now is due out fairly soon and/or official reveals tied to New York Toy Fair.
-
It looks different from previous versions, sure, but not different enough to "require" a new mold. Certainly wouldn't rule out a new mold, but I won't be surprised if they stick with the same cowl as TLBM - nor will I be disappointed. From what little we've seen, it's the cobbled-together look of the suit itself (not to mention the bat emblem that might be made of gun?) that will be the key to making sure a minifig rendition is recognizable as RBattz. On another note, are we thinking the WW84 set might be revealed this weekend at New York Toy Fair?

I hope you're right! At first I assumed the hair was part of the head mold, but on closer inspection there's a ridge that seems to indicate a separate piece. If that is the case, what do you think they'll do for Ernie's hair?

Ten years ago, there were actually only two series (because Series 1 came out in spring, which has been the release for the second series of the year in each year since). But the regular pattern has always been three series per year, the only exceptions being limited-release series like the 2012 Olympics or 2016 DFB ones. -

I'm reminded of a quote by The Land Institute co-founder Wes Jackson: Jens sparked so many imaginations with his creativity and passion for toy design that even if his most famous invention is an inch and a half tall, it can never be said he didn't think big enough. The man himself will be missed, but his life's work most certainly lives on in countless builders both now and in the future. -

It can be said for literally every CMF, can't it? "I don't care for [x subgenre], therefore every [x subgenre] minifig they release is a waste of a slot that could have gone to something I like better." -

I assume there will be an official reveal this weekend at the NYTF? Kind of hard to judge based on the translation of the list, but there are quite a few that sound promising, especially if the synthesizer is a keytar. -
I like the Mia cube! Nice easy source for the popcorn box piece, and I've been hoping for years to see a 3D glasses face print.

I wondered that myself - there was an hourglass piece in a few Elves sets in 2016, and as far as I know it was only ever made in pink, so a green recolor of that could be cool.

German Toy Fair – LEGO To Increase Focus On AFOLs
tafkatb replied to danth's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I'm an adult. I enjoy building and collecting LEGO sets. I frequent LEGO fan sites, go to the occasional event/display, and I even worked for the company for half a decade. The passion and motivation Shayd mentions are definitely there. I am by any objective measure part of that group contributing 10% of TLG's revenue. I don't consider myself an AFOL. Probably a big part of my rejection of that label is just how toxic the general idea of fandom has become. (Matt Singer has a pretty good write-up of that here.) -
Interesting! I might be willing to splurge on a lighting setup for my Hogwarts Castle, but I wouldn't want to light any modulars unless I can light all of them, which could add up quick...

They say that with every series. -
These things are planned out far enough in advance that the sales of this series won't really have any bearing on whether a second comes out next year. The Simpsons and TLBM only got series in back-to-back years because they were already planned to from the start - whereas it took three years for Disney, which was easily the most popular licensed series at the time, to get a followup. (Not to mention neither Disney nor DC have been tied to any specific release/event like the movies or the 25th-anniversary push the Simpsons got, so they can be more flexible with the timing.) So, tl;dr: the brisk sales of the DC series almost certainly mean a second series will come, but not necessarily as soon as next year.

I thought the "large set" was what turned out to be the brick-built Hedwig, no?
-
Doesn't the latest Catwoman use a recolor of the TLBM mask?
-
Personally I think the Cheetah design looks pretty cool - and pretty close to what I was expecting her to look like anyway.

A big satellite dish build sounds like it could be interesting, if we're talking big enough to be brick-built and not just like a 10x10 dish piece or something. Also adds more fuel to the theories that WW84 will involve Brother Eye. I hope the Wonder Woman minifig has the golden eagle armor! ETA: Going back and watching the trailer again, there's a very prominent shot of a huge satellite dish around the 1:07 mark that is probably the basis for the set - though it'll definitely have to be scaled down a bit.

After fiddling around a bit with saturation on the photos, I'm reasonably convinced the color is Bright Yellow, not Cool Yellow. Basically, I played with the color levels in two different directions - one to make the car look undeniably Bright Yellow, and one to make it firmly Cool Yellow. When I made it Bright Yellow, everything else about the box art looked more or less "right," but when I took it in a lighter direction, other elements of the picture started to look washed-out. I could certainly be wrong - and kind of hope I am, because I always look forward to cheese slopes in new colors - but that is my take on it. On another note, I have to mention that the graphic designers really seem to be stepping up their game on background art! Both this and the Bookshop have really gorgeous settings.

Seems like the Atom Bricks all come in the same shapes as LEGO ones, so I suppose one could easily enough just translate the designs into LEGO bricks (depending on availability of certain colors - Unity Temple definitely uses a few part/color combos that aren't in LEGO's portfolio). But it does seem like this is the final nail for the Architecture theme being about, y'know, architecture, rather than tourism, if the FLW Foundation is taking their ball bricks elsewhere. (Though the foolishly optimistic side of me wonders if maybe Atom could be so wildly successful that it forces LEGO to reconsider their approach in order to compete.)
