  1. Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but it seemed like the most appropriate one.

I'm starting to build MS from scratch (having done CC a couple of years ago) and I need to put a parts order in while the dark blue arches are in stock with the spare parts service. Is there anything else I should pick up directly from Lego at the same time before I start on the Bricklink orders?

  2. Welcome!

I'm a modular collector, currently with CC, GG, FB, GE and PS. CC was built via Bricklink as it had been discontinued before I was ready to buy it — you can find out more about mine and other people's Bricklinked modulars on this thread: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=60958&hl= It was certainly cheaper than buying a boxed set, although I did substitute some of the rarer bricks, and it's the route I'll be going down to build Market Street eventually.

As for the prices, the modulars are usually a sort of "Lego Exclusive" (at least in the UK anyway) ie. you can't buy them in general toy shops, only from Lego Stores or Lego.com. Any which make their way onto Amazon or eBay tend to be overpriced, possibly because the trader assumes people might not know where else to get them from.

Definitely start with what's still 'current' eg. Fire Brigade, Pet Shop, Town Hall and Palace Cinema and consider Bricklinking the rest. Pet Shop is a great set — loads of details to keep you amused!

  3. Hmm, bit disappointed with this one, if I'm honest. I don't think the style will work that well with the rest of the modulars—the others, while different enough to be unique, still blend in together nicely—this one sticks out like a sore thumb. A 1920's style cinema would have suited it better. In any case, I'll be interested to see the official photos and the interior.

  4. Just back from the Lego Store with:

    10218 Pet Shop

    10230 Mini Modulars

and the seven CMFs I wanted (thanks to the staff for feeling packets with me - it saved a lot of time!):

    Chicken Suit Guy

    Policeman

    Skater

    Plumber

    Judge

    Movie Star

Waiter (took us ages to find this one!)

  5. Totally normal and there's no need to sort the bricks after you open them unless you really want to. I usually find that smaller pieces are all in one bag and I tend to keep those separate from the rest just so they're easier to find. The only thing I remember from the Camper Van (I built it with friends who are less experienced with modern Lego) was to pay attention to the colours of bricks being used. I got towards the end and found that someone had used a brick elsewhere in the build because the difference between light bley and silver (if I remember rightly) wasn't that obvious.

    • Grandma – Should be a useful civilian fig. What accessories could she have? A cat? Knitting needles?

As a knitter, I would LOVE minifig knitting needles!

I generally only buy the minifigs that fit into my Modular street or Winter Village sets (plus the costumed CMFs, who are at the Pet Shop's launch party!), so I'd be buying Yeti (if it's a costume), Welder, Jazz Musician, Constable (if it's a British bobby), Holiday Elf, Bavarian Lady, Grandma, Gingerbread Man and Diner Waitress, possibly Scarecrow and Scientist as well. That's more than my usual average of about 6 CMFs per series.

  6. From the sets I've looked at, it's really not that much cheaper in the US. For example, Mini Modulars is £59.99 or $79.99 (£50) and by the time you've added US sales tax and/or import duty the difference really is negligible. For Aussies, the difference is much, MUCH bigger. e.g. Town Hall costs AU $299 but the US price translates to AU $189.

I've been spending alternate months in the US this year and the only Lego I've bought back is a few PAB cups from when they were BOGOF a few months ago. To me, the slight difference in price isn't worth the hassle of getting a big set home. If I was an Aussie, I would be filling my suitcase with the stuff every time!

  7. Yeah, I went on Friday and while it was quiet around 9am, by lunchtime it was full of people loving the new store. I'm a bit gutted to miss the grand opening though - just hoping they don't do any really amazing exclusive sets as promos!

While the official opening isn't until August the store is actually open now. I went today with my son and we had a great time. I took a few pics if anyone wants to check it out: http://brickfanatics.co.uk/a-visit-to-the-manchester-lego-store/
