A couple of months ago I was toying with some ideas for a little fake electric motor for a smaller car. After some tinkering, I found that something might work for a front axle.

This AWD E-Hatch is the result of that work.

Free Instructions may be found at Rebrickable.com

The car features:

  • AWD with two fake electric motors
  • Steering with HOG and steering wheel
  • Opening doors
  • Opening hood
  • Rear wing or spoiler lip
  • Seating for three

Central to the car is the drivetrain. A direct drive from the rear differential to the fake electric motor is on the rear axle. The front axle uses two CV joints on each side to drive a single axle and a pair of gears to the front fake electric motor. The axle "floats", which allows it to move even though the CV joints are not in line with the steering joint pivots. I works well, thought turning radius is not a good as other 15 wide cars, and a front differential would be a little better. It's not the first time I mounted wheels directly to a CV joint, and I'm happy to use this option again.

Before you ask me how it works, take a look at the video.

I'm not sure I like the little spoiler look. But I thought I would give the quieter look a try.

I shared these instructions for free, because I want as many people as possible to use this idea. If it helps your creation, let me know.

Enjoy!

Looks kinda like Renault5. I like it.

It's a shame frond is without diff.

The big rear spoiler is definitely better.

Looks cool! Nice work! The 3 seats thing is interesting, I think I've seen it in some real cars.

Thanks!

I took inspiration for the idea from the the Alpine Beta A290 (three seats, electric AWD).

And styling cues from the Renault R5 Turbo 3E.

Cool idea, and a great little car. Not everything has to be 50 studs long!!

I absolutely agree. I get much more enjoyment from small builds.

Glad you like it.
