ameinild Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) Hello I'm just looking around for now, but I was wondering it it's possible to embed a public image from Google Drive or Dropbox? I have the following shared image on Google drive: (for testing purposes only) https://drive.google.com/file/d/18Ng0di6xUk7-OQSckNZl5bHmq4BySyW5/preview But I can't get it to work as an embedded image - am I missing something, or does it simply not work for Google Drive? When I click "Other Media" and "Insert image from URL" and copy the URL, the box turns red like it's not accepting the link. Is there another way? Thanks! Edited June 17 by ameinild Explain Quote
Murdoch17 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 You have to find a photo hosting site like Flickr (among others) and then link the photo into your picture. Google drive doesn't work as far as I know, and I don't know about Dropbox. There are tutorials on EB about this type of thing, but I don't know where or if they are up to date. Maybe @aFrInaTi0n or another mod can help you out with this... Quote
aFrInaTi0n Posted June 17 Posted June 17 As Murdoch explained already, google drive is not allowing to share the images directly with their links, instead the link is just leading to the Google Drive UI, then showing the requested image in it's UI. The known working and well known providers are listed in our guide, but others may work as well. May it be worth for putting a line for known not working providers (mentioning Google Drive)? Quote
ameinild Posted June 17 Author Posted June 17 Ok thanks - I'll look into one of the supported sites. Cheers! Quote
aFrInaTi0n Posted June 17 Posted June 17 I added Google Drive as a not-supported provider in our guide - so thanks for bringing up that topic! Quote
JesseNight Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Dropbox was once supported for hotlinking but not anymore for a while now. Another good free image host that doesn't require registering is ImgBB. Quote

Another good free image host that doesn't require registering is ImgBB. I just tested Dropbox, and it still works. When you get the image link, you have to replace dl=0 with raw=1 at the end, then it works. See this article, which is still valid: https://community.dropbox.com/en/discussion/245432/how-do-i-embed-images-with-a-direct-link-from-dropbox Edited June 18 by ameinild Quote
JesseNight Posted June 18 Posted June 18 I know that article and method from before. Somewhere in 2019-2021 it wasn't working anymore and the direct links would be only temporary ones that constantly changed. I remember well because before that I've used it a lot. Not sure if that was reverted again... Quote
aFrInaTi0n Posted Friday at 07:37 AM Posted Friday at 07:37 AM I just asked AI and it told me the ?raw=1 method shall still work and the links shall also have no expiry date - but they may get invalid as soon as the original file in the dropbox has been moved (or renamed). So I reckon it would be wise for me also mentioning Dropbox and ImgBB, possibly both with a little visual guide, wouldn't it? Quote
JesseNight Posted Friday at 09:52 AM Posted Friday at 09:52 AM Sure, but I would actually test it first instead of blindly trusting AI. It's plenty of times wrong. Currently not having it in use myself but I can easily find a lot of reports from 2022 from people saying raw=1 is no longer working. Why people assume AI is always right these days is beyond me... aFrInaTi0n Posted Friday at 10:13 AM Posted Friday at 10:13 AM Yepp, may be a little bit more reading from their original policies. But to be fair to ImgBB: Moving images within a provider may change the URLs as well & contents may get not accessible. Quote

I think you should add them to the list of supported for now - as mentioned I tested the Dropbox ?raw=1 method in the beginners testing thread, and it works fine. Quote

I usually recommend ImgBB to people who don't wanna manage albums or even create an account, and just want a quick upload to share a pic without having to ever look back at it. Quote
aFrInaTi0n Posted Friday at 11:23 AM Posted Friday at 11:23 AM I have the very same picture in mind for what usecases I may recommend ImgBB.. Quote
