Madoca 1977 Posted May 18 Posted May 18 (edited) This is my third Tatra model. It is powered by single smart hub which has four ports, and only two of them are used for propulsion L motors. That means less power is available than past two models. Smaller scale and lighter weight may help to achieve equal off-road capability as its predecessor. So let's find out! Weight: 1960g (including 6 AA batteries) Features: -2x L motor for propulsion -1x M motor for steering -1x M motor for high/low gearbox -Tatra type independent swinging half axle suspension -Working steering wheel and V12 engine -Detachable cabin and smart hub -Openable front grill, doors and roof hatch -Ready for trial edition with roll cage Thanks to planetary gear reduction hub, the performance was close to its big brothers. A few gear skipping occurred when chassis got stuck on sharp edged rocks, though. Propulsion L motors are not coupled. Each side of wheels have independent drivetrain. (One L motor, gearbox and a set of gear deduction) That makes turning radius a bit smaller. Gear shifting is operated via single liner actuator. The axis of all swinging half axles runs through the center of chassis. Blue 20T double bevel gears are also on the same axis. They transfer the power from left/right side of drivetrain to the same side of half axles. Front heavy weight distribution required harder suspension setting on front axle. After various attempts, I managed to make only 1st axle suspension hard enough to support the weight of cabin while allowing it to move freely to keep contact with the ground. Just a few extra steps are needed for installing roll cage. Additionally, I made a simple display stand. It makes the model look dynamic while preventing suspension from sagging. The model proved to me that even two L motors could drive fairly big 8x8 truck. I am thinking to continue building off-roaders using one smart hub and up to four motors. In other words, seeking for the capacity of Powered Up components. Although the future of PU/C+ seems cloudy, it is always worth challenging for me to reach further goal only using ordinary parts. Building instructions will be available. And I prevented overloaded situation as possible using low gear mode properly. The performance did not change from beginning to the end. Tires from 42160 set were a bit slippery on the rock. When wheels stands vertical (zero camber), the edge of tires stick out in half stud on both sides. Quote
