Stoertebricker Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 (edited) Hi rowers! In mind of the small "rowboat" sets, like 6245, I build an entry for the Mini Set category: Purple Privates - feared by all pirates I made three rowboats, so let me know which is your favourite, i will pick the best tomorrow evening as the official entry. Here we have private O. and his first mate Scar. Both in a rowboat with purple benches and rapier. As the contest only allows 50pcs, the forthcoming rowboats can be interpretet as an eytra, to show what can be possible with the colour scheme: The next ones are monsieur C. and Dante - the duck. The duck is one of the best rowers on the seven seas and due to constant rowing wearing no uniform, so the water can cool him and a thick layer of salt protects him froim the sun (and also showing off his epic duck tattoo!). I even created their own purple flag (normally I never make custom prints besides sails)! Last but not least, there is private C. - the cook. Besides his fast shooting skills, he is a magnificent cook and knows how to infiltrate every fortress through the kitchens cellars. Here I have some pics with the full fleet. I think there could be a complete new fraction based on this colour scheme. If you like them, most of the parts are currently available at PAB online. Probably the three privates with rapiers will make a nice group of three purple musketeers, too! I hope you like purple, pink and orange soldiers as well! durazno33 Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I like the purple theme as something different. Something a private merchant force might do. I'm not sure I like the orange minifig though as it clashes with the rest of the theme. Also why does one of your row boats have a completely flag seat so that a minifigure can't sit on it? And since one of your boats has white oars, I would suggested having all the boats have the same color. Brown would work fine so that they don't disappear with the white boat behind them. Quote
Rogue Redcoat Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Nice, but we need some clarification is this one set or multiple as I think there are more than 50 parts, anyway the soldiers look great (now if only I could find those dual molded white and black legs on PAB) Other than this the accessories look great almost like a battle pack I would change that orange guy or clarification on the uniform distinctions anyway, happy building :) Quote
Mazin Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 Hm... sorry, i like You other entries, but this one doesn't realy work for me. I don't mind purple or red tones in the series, but it's the way it's delivered it makes all this stuff look out of place, as if these were bootlegs from India's Funskool or if these were prototypes still waiting for a good paint job. I like the idea of a barechest pirate with an epoulette and captain's hat tho. This is something You could go with, as it realy this barbaric, sort of postoapo type character, one that clearly stands out of the crowd, as he doesn't follow any dress code, cause he's either a villain powerfull enough to do whatever he wants or he's just one of many drunk goons of the carribean ;) Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I agree with Mazin here, looks more like a just for fun entry. No point in mixing purple and orange and especially a shirtless guy with serious soldiers. Although I must admit that the white and purple color scheme is quite appealing and makes an excellent concept for a new fraction among the good guys fighting the pirates! Quote

iragm Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I like the purple color scheme, it works for me even it it's completely historically inaccurate. The orange is the weakest part of the design and should go. Unfortunately, there isn't really a build to critique here, so I don't have a lot more feedback to offer. Quote

Thanks, that was my intention, just something different. The orange comes from the orange epaulettes and I wanted a figure to stand out a bit. The seat is flat, because I could not find more 2x4 or 1x4 tile in dark purple, I always build with my parts storage. Yeah your right about the oars, first I wanted white but could not find more so switched to brown, but forgot to change the first boat 20 hours ago, Rogue Redcoat said: Nice, but we need some clarification is this one set or multiple as I think there are more than 50 parts, anyway the soldiers look great (now if only I could find those dual molded white and black legs on PAB) Other than this the accessories look great almost like a battle pack I would change that orange guy or clarification on the uniform distinctions anyway, happy building :) As I said, I wanted to elect one of the 3 today, my choice would have been the one with the shirtless guy, but MisterPhes took the first foto so I will stay with that one. 11 hours ago, Mazin said: Hm... sorry, i like You other entries, but this one doesn't realy work for me. I wanted to take a complete differnt take for this category, because I thought the criteria is already very strict. I ordered the pieces at PAB a while ago so I thought its the perfet opportunity to try out what the recoloured pieces can do. Okay if you dont like the orange but for me the purple works better then expected! 8 hours ago, Mister Phes said: It's refreshing when someone invents a new sub theme/faction! As Mazin and MstrOfPppts said, probably I can make some rearengements and probably go with golden epaulettes or something not as crazy as orange ;) Thanks @all for your comments and criticism! Quote

Glad You arent upsed by my words :) As said, i dont have anything against bringing new colors into the series, i think that they just don;t look good here. Maybe if they would see a bit more decorative work, like that white rim on Governor's/Admiral's hat. This little difference would make them more appealing. Especialy that You've chosen bikorn hats for Your experimentantion, and as You probably now, they aren't that popular in the series. And they are only black or decorative, at least i'm not familiar with other versions. Unlike trikorns which came in different shades, and to be honest the one that is completely black isn;t anything as nice as a decorated one, it can't compare to trikorns or even shakos. So i'd try to bring that color with trikorns if i was so determined as You are :) Actually those striking colors were quite popular among merchants, aristrocrats, all the rich boys, and of course, the ladies. So why not force civilians to wear them first ;) So it;s not the purple that's the problem here, it's the way You've decided to introduce it into the series :) Also i think that a purple soldier with a classic look, where purple would be only used to replace red or blue uniforms, and the rest would stay the same, would be quite attractive. So that would mean only doing custom torsos. I don't mind seeing orange troopers as well. I remember that few years ago there was this huge project here, official or not, where all of us tried to come up with ideas for new Pirate sets and new faction and they tried to pursue these merchants/dutch soldiers i think. Someone already made orange versions of soldiers/imperial flags, as well as orange uniforms. I don't know how did that project end, i think it died, but if You'll dig a bit on the Forum You should find that thead and might get inspired by some ideas used there and take from where they left :) Take a look, found it for You :) Wasn't hard. Enjoy :) Edited August 26, 2023 by Mazin Quote
