SevenDeadlyStreamers Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) I remade a rather small set into something more appropriate for the 18+ adults that would appreciate the nostalgia of this set. As with most 18+ sets, I have included fully brick built elements such as the boat and crocodile, and made the islanders appear a little more savage. The original King Kahuka’s Throne had a less impressive seat for the king, so I chose to upgrade that since it is one of the main features of this build. https://www.flickr.com/gp/198704374@N03/We033qL793 Here’s the original for reference Edited July 12, 2023 by SevenDeadlyStreamers Added Flickr Link Quote
Marooned Marin Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Ahoy @SevenDeadlyStreamersand welcome aboard! You have made something mighty good looking there, but one picture will not do. We want loads of pictures here, with every little detail shown to us. Since Eurobricks forum does not allow upload of images directly to its server, you need to use some other image hosting platform like Flickr, Bricksafe... and then share images from there inside your post. Don't feel intimidated by this process, it's quite easy, just follow the tutorial inside the spoiler. HOW TO UPLOAD PHOTOS - Click Spoiler Hide contents 1. Go to your Flickr (or BrickSafe) account and open one picture in the new tab. 2. Click view full size 3. Copy the url address: example on the picture (same is for BrickSafe) 4. Paste the address inside the post (click edit post), and the system will automatically embed the picture inside the post. The End ...... If unsure, you can go to training ground for new members here-click and practice your posting pictures skills. Quote
zinnn Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 based on that small photo - WOW, looks incredible, I love the brick built croc and the head monument in particular. I cannot wait for better quality photos! I had this set as a kid at it was my top 3 fav Pirates sets from my collection Quote
Horation Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 If Lego made sets for AFOLs Theme A well defended, and lavish (by islander standards) throne room, with pirates to do looting! There's an enormous crocodile-which is actually a pretty good idea for extra play value, so good job there. And the large space of the original isn't wasted-just made more detailed, now I'd love to know if there are traps, hidden treasures or other features here, because it isn't clear from this one picture. Build The colors are dark, which is what I'd want from a wild jungle setting, The occasional light green on the rocks and the trees is really clever while the statue is really detailed-if a bit too abandoned to my taste, as there are islanders living there who should be able to maintain and clean it of foliage if need be. The thatched roof is excellent, as are the other elements of islander infrastructure on the island? And silly question @SevenDeadlyStreamers, but does it come with a Lego frog? Quote
Yperio_Bricks Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 The small picture looks very promising! Please upload bigger pictures so we can see your moc in all its beauty. Oh, and welcome to the forum Quote

I originally wanted to do the Enchanted Island, but that was a little too big of an undertaking for me. 3 hours ago, Horation said: If Lego made sets for AFOLs Theme A well defended, and lavish (by islander standards) throne room, with pirates to do looting! So many great suggestions, I appreciate the feedback. Traps and hidden treasure would be great additions, unfortunately I didn’t think of those… and I can’t believe I didn’t include a frog, lol I used the zebra-print drum-top for the throne, and used a similar pattern under the pile of gold, however both are hidden. Next time I render images I’ll try to show some cutaway views. Thanks! 2 hours ago, Yperio_Bricks said: The small picture looks very promising! NOD Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Great! A beautifully built remake! It has many very nice details. I really like the statue, the hut, the throne, the boat and the landscape. The big crocodile looks scary. I would buy this set. Quote

Now you try to add rest of the images following the three simple steps which I mentioned to you earlier. Thank you for all you help. I was having a little trouble, maybe because I was doing this all from my iPhone. Anyway, I think I got the hang of it and I do really appreciate it! 36 minutes ago, NOD said: Great! Yes, you succeed, and what a lovely update this is As I'm not one of the critiques here, I will only say well done on your creation! Now, give us some details, how many parts? How much time did you put into it? And where have you been until now? We need more talented pirate builders. Quote

Part count is embedded in the images :D I'd love to see this set from the back, and also maybe a peek inside the King's tent? @SevenDeadlyStreamers could you also export some images with white background, instead of black? It'd be easier to check the details that way. Quote
iragm Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 The water design is amazing! I love the brick-built croc but it's too skinny when viewed from the top down -- add a plate of thickness around the midriff and it would look better, I think? The statue is great, brick-built boat is nice (although I think cloth sails would be used in an 18+ set) and it looks great. This does feel more like a MOC than an official set due to the density of the foliage in the jungle. That is not a bad thing at all. Well done! Quote

Thank you, I honestly just started using BrickLink Studio at the beginning of this year for their BrickLink Designer Program. I’ve also learned a lot through some activities on LEGO Ideas. When I seen a contest on Eurobricks I just had to participate, Pirates were one of the first themes I fell in love with as a kid so it’s been a lot of fun revisiting that joy through communities like this! 19 hours ago, zinnn said: Part count is embedded in the images :D I'd love to see this set from the back, and also maybe a peek inside the King's tent? @SevenDeadlyStreamers could you also export some images with white background, instead of black? I’ll definitely do that when I get a chance, I’m still pretty new at the digital design but I’ve learned a lot of neat tricks and continue to learn with each build I make. 47 minutes ago, iragm said: The water design is amazing! It’s definitely more of a MOC than what the contest requires, maybe I got a little carried away with the jungle, lol. I actually don’t know how to bring fabric into BrickLink Studio. And thanks for the suggestion with the croc, I’ll play around with some other ideas and see if I can get it looking more realistic. Quote

Worry not! Contest requires you to build something awesome and pirate-themed. Piece-count is only a guide-line for designers not go overboard. Good rule of the thumb is, if you are under 3000k pieces (just like on LEGO Ideas) you are still inside "economic/size normal" category. So build away that jungle! 5 hours ago, SevenDeadlyStreamers said: I actually don’t know how to bring fabric into BrickLink Studio. That's quite easy, if you have any CAD designer skills, as I have explained here BRACE YOURSELF, my critique on your way... Flag on the ship is pointed in wrong direction of the wind, which is supposed to be blowing in the sails? Yup, that's my only issue with this MOC ENTRY. It's just proves how good it is. Quote
Yperio_Bricks Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 This is such a wondeful moc! I love everything about it Quote
Powder Monkey Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 Yes! Great project, love the Islanders sub theme so much! It deserves all the attention it can possibly get, I think it was such a beautiful addition and contrast to the pirates stuff. Quote

Thanks for the tips, and I will try not make the wind go opposite direction in future builds (but maybe there was a tiny tornado?) MstrOfPppts Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 This is an incredible MOC, not that much of an official set potential, yet according to staff it seems to fit the competition rules. Anyway I really love the statue head, love the pointy nose and the inclusion of sand green to make it look a bit old and used. Unfortunately it's the only part that reminds me of the set you were trying to recreate. I do understand the artists freedom, though these recreations are slowly getting out of hand for my taste. It's like trying to recreate a 20-30 price point set in the style of an UCS ... This is just me, but I really don't like CREATOR line. Many say it has lots of interesting and diverse parts, but what I don't like is that we don't get specialized parts like sails and molded animals. Brick build sails and animals just don't work for me. The crocodile is built very nicely and could easily be a CREATOR set on its own, but for my taste it does not fit into a pirates set especially since LEGO has a recent mold for it. It is too big and uses too many parts in non existing colors to be included in an official set as a side build. Note that this is just my point of view. I've already mentioned this problem in the rules of this competition even before it started. Otherwise as said an incredible build nevertheless! Quote
GeoBrick Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Love the feel of the island, and the use of those curved tiles to create the wavey watery effect on the sea is splendid. The sail looks used and sturdy at the same time, without it looking too bloated. Nice balance there. In fact, the island's flow is so well that the use of angular slopes on the statues' ears kind of clash with it. I know the original set had very large and 'pointy' ears too, but you're not obligated to copy it to that extend. Quote

I did have some of the same thoughts while making it, but as soon as I started “enhancing” certain aspects I felt compelled to keep adding. I was thinking of what they did to games like Final Fantasy 7 when it was remade. The remake barely resembles the original, although you can see the inspiration. 6 hours ago, GeoBrick said: Love the feel of the island, and the use of those curved tiles to create the wavey watery effect on the sea is splendid. At first it looked like the Kings mask, then it ended up looking like a bird. I do appreciate all the comments and I will certainly take notes for my future designs! Quote

Rogue Redcoat Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 First, the moc looks absolutely awesome. I do have some suggestions, first, even though I love the great big alligator, I think it needs to go it's just too big. Secondly, there is also a bit too much foliage. Other than this all I have is praise from the throne to the water and the updated figs. Anyway, Happy building :) Quote

I did get carried away with the plants, I see that now. Thanks for the feedback! Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 The crocodile is very convincing! The eyes!!! Quote
Mazin Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 It's one impressive build, but also extremly hard to judge as the presentation is extremely crowded, it's all so mixed up, it's very confusing. Like i realy like Your throne, but i like it because i can see it clearly on the picture with character presentation, it's an dissapearing when i look at the whole set. And looking at the set i have only questions. There's an impressive hut, whats inside it, how does it look from different angles. Same goes for the statue, same goes for the rock formation. A want to know if there's a hidden comparment under it, if they are play features included, etc etc. The problem is that althought You've invested lots of work and passion into this structure it kinda looks like a blurred photo Indiana Jones would obtain and would have to orchestrate a dangerous and expensive expedition to see what's actually in there ;) That is if that crocodile wouldn't get him first of course ;) Wow, that a hell of a beast! Surely he was well fed on intruders. I'm not a fan of such radical changes to the Lego world, both him and the giant shark seem completely unnecesary in my opinion, classic are all right, and all that manhours could be spent on inventing other stuff rather then reinvent an already exsisting piece :) The same way, i'm not a fan of that boat and the sail. But characters are pretty cool. And i love this cage made out of spears. So, i do wanna believe it's all fine of work, but it's need a better presentation, with so many pieces included ( which would probably make it a rather expensive set ) we should be allowed to see clearly trough the whole thing, to megablocks if it's worth it and what does it have to offer. Like the throne, i love that throne, i would buy this set only to get it, but i would never have discovered that it's there if there wasn't a separate pic included ;) So maybe it needs a different background, with softer color/s, or maybe it shouldn't be that confined, but rather spread on a much larger area :) Quote
