In other themes that are not Technic, having such large pieces (like the many 3x19 frames and large truss pieces) would be seen as a negative. But even as a huge lifelong fan of (what) Technic (should be), I've never felt endless beam stacking and placing half a thousand pins to be as satisfying as placing bricks. It's the mechanisms that are fun to build, not so much their surrounding structures and definitely not bodywork (probably why cars aren't so much fun to build). It's easy to imagine having to build all those trusses from regular technic beams, and how tedious that would be. So I think the large amount of what some might call j u n i o r i s e d pieces can actually be a good thing in Technic, so long as it's not the mechanisms that are being j u n i o r i s e d. This crane is a great example of that. I do not own the set. But I did consider buying it when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago. In the end I decided against it and a big reason for this is because of the fact that I would be paying a lot of money for these big pieces that I feel will have little use in other constructions I would like to build, which is in my view the point of LEGO. While the 3x19 frames are very useful and a very important addition to the LEGO technic piece pallet, I don't know where I would use 26 yellow ones. And the many other frame parts included I would have rather seen being regular brick-built constructions instead, for re-useability purposes. The counterweight pieces have very limited use as well. But like you said, it would probably be a not so fun building experience building the crane sections if these large specialized pieces weren't introduced. And the strucural regidity would probably not be good enough, especially with the extra weight brick-built crane sections would add. Edited January 11 by zoo Quote
Jundis Posted January 11 Posted January 11 On a side note: I find it very amusing that this set was so harshly critiqued not only for the price and the looks but also the PU-play functions and now seems to gain interest again after seeing the failure of 2026 Technic lineup :D Maybe in a few years, we will have the 42215 highly praised as the last real construction technic set before the downfall and overtake of the technic cars...
