MAB Posted March 3 Posted March 3 18 hours ago, TheDoctor said: Star Wars is very different. It definitely has more significant quiet periods where I don't see kids talking about it or with merchandise. It's obviously very male dominated (whether you like it or not) and the kids aren't aware of the EU books to fill the voids between releases. From 2007ish to 2015, it dropped off the radar in my school. Obviously there were ones who would watch it with their parents and then a small group would be 'into it' for a few school terms, but it would pass. From 2019 to now, interest has really died off. Star Wars also has a big bonus of parents or other adults are often the ones buying products for kids, whether it is LEGO, lunch boxes or pyjamas. Star Wars is seen as fairly safe and kid friendly and so 3 year old kids have Darth Vader (or Batman or Harry Potter) PJs not because they like them buy because their parents buy them. It gets the kid at least knowledgeable about the franchise early, and no doubt the same parents also buy them LEGO X-wings or whatever around the age of 10. All these big franchises work on getting the kids in early these days. LEGO included with DUPLO Batman and 4+ sets for Star Wars, Batman, etc. Quote
Black Falcon Posted March 3 Posted March 3 13 hours ago, RichardGoring said: I don't think Star Wars is the fair comparison though. It has so much investment from Disney and a large marketing push to promote it. Plus a legion of loyal fans who lap it up. I never said you could compare them one to one, but as I mentioned, Star Wars might have the bigger fan base, but also way more Sets around, while the attention of the LotR-Fans would all be on 4-5 small Sets and the big one. And, I wouldn´t underestimate the number of Castle fans that are going to buy them for minifigure parts and shields etc. That being said: 13 hours ago, RichardGoring said: Indiana Jones may be a better to look at. Classic films that people love from quite a while ago, not really marketed towards kids, and not a huge amount of merchandise available. LEGO did, in my opinion, three great sets for it, and they were all on heavy discount or clearance not too long after release. And LEGO likely won't touch it again as a result. If prefer LEGO to take the slow and steady approach that keeps it alive, rather than going out in the blaze of glory of a fun wave, where we still wouldn't get everything that's desired. I don´t think Indiana Jones is a fair comparison either ;). First of all, it was released alongside a film that didn´t really help much to support interest in the franchise, and overall I would say LotR has the bigger Fanbase of the two franchises (though, that is just my personal impression). Eitherway, an other important difference to me is, that I do belive that way more Castle Fans would buy LotR Sets than Adventurers Fans bought Indiana Jones - let alone that LotR would have a way better chance people buy several copies of a Set (though of course that would depend on the Set). LotR probably does have a larger fan base, but about the same order of magnitude compared to Star Wars? It's likely a relatively small difference. But for LEGO, you're spot on. Castle fans boost the sales potential by a lot for the right set. Very fair point. Quote
Archer Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I just bought Rivendell from Amazon, they shipped it literally in the set's box and nothing else, and put tape and stickers all over the thing. I was worried pieces would be missing but it all seems to be there, I'm not one to leave things sealed or save boxes, but I was still livid. Amazon's only offer was that I could return it for a refund which doesn't really solve the issue. I looked at recent reviews of the set and it seems they just ship it like that. I guess I'm lucky i had it sent to a UPS store and not my front porch. Do not buy Rivendell from Amazon!! Quote

Assuming we will see it a few weeks before release. are we thinking $250? 8 -10 minifigures? Jedijacpenguin has Bag End listed at $199.99 USD. Not sure where he's getting his info, but if it's true that's a great price for a major license with 2K pieces. Let's wait and see how many figs it has, though. I can't wait for true leaks about 10354 Bag End and the GWP. I don't like BrickHeadz but I think it's strange we don't have heard about new ones. Hope new smaller sets are around the corner after this booknook. I also hope this last one will be well done ! Quote

So much possibilities, they have so much to do if they want to be movie exhaustive ! But to continue the fellowship they could make Aragorn and Boromir, Sam and Pippin, etc. Quote

sonofasubmariner Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I hope so. I have limited space and budget so I need to see some of these mooted sets to make some decisions. Bag End, Arkham and the Enterprise D are all supposed to be coming this year, and both Tudor Corner and the X-Mansion are already on my list, but I can't get them. I need start seeing them to make some choices. Quote
Retrocity Posted March 8 Posted March 8 (edited) Photo is out there! It looks good. Just one overall shot, nothing of any interior. Apparently just called The Shire. Haven't been keeping up on this for the past few days, but hearing it's supposed to be closer to $200? Edited March 8 by Retrocity Quote

Black Falcon Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Looks great, and I do like that they didn´t just include bag end but also some sidebuilds and additional hobbits. Would say minifig selection is good and especially they do look good - aside from Gandalf all torsos seem to be new. Honestly expected the set to be an easy skip, as Bag End wasn´t really something that I was looking for anyways. But it is much better than I expected. Quote
Kraby Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Looks absolutely awesome! Really curious as to what the GWP will be now, thought it might be Gandalf's cart but guess not! Quote
mcbbvb Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I like the main build but the rest not so much. Without all the invited people to Bilbo’s birthday, the side buildings feel empty and out of place. I wish they just kept it at the main build and make it cheaper. It now feels like they had a price and they thought of things to add to get to that price. Quote
Balrogofmorgoth Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I REALLY love how this set looks. I love that every character gets new prints. Gandalf has a new face print (at least new to him), and everyone else gets new torso prints and new face prints mostly. Sam is the only one who seems to have the same face as Rivendell. I didn’t get Lobelia or Farmer Maggot but we got Rosie Cotton and Mr. and Mrs. Proudfoot which is a huge W! Also basing them all on the party is perfect, that’s exactly what I wanted. The build looks amazing, I like the side builds, and I’m super excited to see the inside. My biggest gripes are they didn’t give Gandalf the new hat/hair combo mold he really needed and they still refuse to give Bilbo accurate hobbit hair. But other than those two things and the lack of Lobelia (I always knew Maggot was a long shot) I absolutely love it. All the new prints are so good! I’m curious if Merry and Pippin will have alternate hair pieces. I get what they were going for but I don’t think it really worked lol. I can’t tell if their faces are dirty or not, but it looks like they might be? Which is something I wanted to see. All in all I do have some big nit picks but I really love the set and can’t wait to get it!! Can’t wait to see what the GWP is Quote
JohnTPT17 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I'm sure some people would have wanted something bigger - but, for me, this size looks great. Good variety of minifigs, Bag End seems roomy enough for my needs... Definitely on my radar. I also like that new skirt piece and the cloth banners - no need to worry about misaligned or peeling stickers! Only complaint at this point is that tree behind Bilbo. The Minecraft trees look more organic than that. Quote

This was my exact thought when I saw the tree. It is the only blemish on an otherwise magnificent model. The fact that they included the Proudfoot couple is awesome. I'm anxious to see the interior! THELEGOBATMAN Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Wow, once again Icons has outdid itself with yet another The Lord of the Rings set. The main builds is fantastic with all the little hills and greenery. All the details look incredible, especially the front door (and, well, the whole front area). Love seeing Gandalf’s cart, since it's one of the only old LotR sets I still own. I like the addition of the birthday party scenery, but honestly it feels kind of empty and I could've done without it, fully focusing instead on the main build. I can see Merry, but where's Pippin though? I hope they don't skip him for whatever reasons. Adding a Nazgûl would've been really cool too, but oh well. Quote
JohnTPT17 Posted March 8 Posted March 8 1 minute ago, THELEGOBATMAN said: I can see Merry, but where's Pippin though? i think you're seeing Sam - Merry and Pippin are both in the back under the tent with the grey hair (presumedly sooty from exploding the firework). Since Gandalf's cart is in the set, what do we think the GWP will be now? Tolkien himself? Farmer Maggot? Quote
