You should never ever lift the chassis until the marriage is complete...and you should test every single gear each and every single step... As far as I'm concerned, I built box one twice : the first time building without that much care (compared to what was to come), the gearbox stalled on a few gears...the second time, I did choose to build box two first, to add rigidity as soon as the chassis completion without having to lift it in any way. Then I built many of the subassemblies of box one (the little cube could be made to spin very (very) freely (I did change the orientation of the two "change over catch" though). And then built the gearbox, testing it almost every single step from the input of the clutch with a large PF motor (and using the back of a very thin blade to space the gears from the beams)...box one took me almost 8 hours to build without ever lifting it...but it rattles nicely on almost every single gear...from time to time the hardest reverse gear makes the cluch click (so mine is not build as properly as Jangsbricks & FlagsNZ one ;))...and of course I implemented your solution to "force" the gears to engage properly. So mine works almost properly but I've made some minor modifications. In the end, this gearbox is definitely waaay too complicated for what it does, they should have gone for a 4+1R or a 3+1R instead of a 4+4R...only tractors do have such gearboxes...maybe that was a hint at the long gone Porsche tractor building past Quote

Still, when I watch , I see (at timestamp 1:45) a clear resonance in the rotation speed of the gears. This resonance could also be seen in Sariel's video review. This resonance indicates friction somewhere in the drive train.About the trick to never lift the chassis until the marriage is complete...and test every single gear each and every single step... That can surely not be the intention of any model. My statement is: What can be messed up before the marriage, can be messed up after the marriage. It shouldn't be needed to treat your finished build with so much care that the slightest displacement of beams causes it to stop working properly. And even when you build your model with utmost care, you will never avoid the friction introduced by the pin joiner in the D+N+R-gearbox and the friction in the unnecessary red clutch gears. As it appears, it can (even though it will not last). Next week I will tear box one apart and implement some more of your ultimate version of this model, replace some pins for better color matching, add doorlocks, and make the body removable...as for real cars, the engine / transmission is married to a complete monocoque Oh and you should definitely try using printed parts instead of stickers, it looks soo much nicer...shame these are very expensive...as some Porsche had to die in the process Edited August 15, 2016 by charlesw Quote

I think it's widely agreed that the "reduce friction" is not the real reason. And since everything in the set has to be approved or vetoed by Porsche, I think Porsche has its own reason to leave the gearbox that way. It doesn't make sense, yes, but only to us. Recall that Uwe replicated the rear steering, but Porsche vetoed it. So realism is not the highest priority. Quote
