I'm sure like many other builders, I have been enamored with the 15 wide car scale ever since the 42098 Car Transporter came out. I have enjoyed all sorts of little cars by so many different designers, and have made a couple of them myself. The little axle base engines have been fun to see develop in many different applications, and make a great sound. Plus, being not too part intensive makes for a lot of accessible builds. As a longtime Porsche fan, I have longed to MOC some of their cars, but I have not been able to come up with a decent Boxer engine, which is key. @steph77 came up with a nice little design with a 911 designed a while ago, but I wanted another idea. I first came up with a little idea, but it did not save any space from the standard piston parts. And, visually, my eyes were drawn to the crankshaft and mounting, and not to the pistons. But I liked the rotating connectors. So after a little more tinkering, I came up with this: There are three cams on the crankshaft, and an upper pivot for each "piston." Each piston is mounted on the connectors, and swings in and out, as the crankshaft rotates. It's not perfect, but the size is right, and it makes a nice little racket while moving. Naturally, I needed to build a car for the motor. A 911 will happen at sometime, but there are not many Boxsters/Caymans out there, and I have a deep love for both. Also, after building the E30 series last year, I thought another car group would be fun. I stared with a simple mockup, with the engine in place and some other functions, and I like what I had enough to keep going. Steering with HOG is in, as is the rear differential. Then I realized I would need to have a convertible top. This may have been a step too far. I worked on a number of mechanisms using the draft table below. I think this is draft 3 of 8. The top is still not finalized, and might not be for a while. But I have enough of the placement of engine, axles, bodywork, to know the constraints I have for the top. I'll get there, but it may take some time. The idea is to have the HOG on the armrest when the top is down, and manually extended by an axle through the roof when it is up. I tend to build a Studio file when everything is done, but this project is requiring a little more design/redesign, so I have a couple of drafts in Studio now. And this is where the "final" draft currently stands. I'm not sure about the roll bars right now. I love the look, but the part is a little rare. We'll see where this goes. Not everything is working great yet, so if I can't figure it out, maybe I'll just end with only a completed Cayman. I welcome your questions, comments, and insults. -
For the last couple of years I've been secretly working on something different than my previous cars and trucks. This here - I present to you Boxer - Infantry fighting vehicle. It's the same scale as my other car MOCs. But boy oh boy - it is a beast compared to those tiny cars. This one here is larger than the famous Abrams tank in real life. So imagine that this one here is like a heavy duty truck. Full with as many details as I could possibly find in the internet. It may sound silly that I mention it so, but... those military vehicle details, especially when it comes to the interior details and gadgets, those pictures are very hard to find. Probably for a good and secure reason, so - can't really blame anyone for that. Would love to see one of these up close in person. Some day, maybe. Till then - enjoy this one. Hope you like it, couse I sure do :) Oh, did I mention? It has all wheels double spring suspension, all wheels drive with PF (2 x XL) and 2 x front axle steering (1 x M). So, I had a lot of ambition, and good ideas for my studless remake. Originally, I was going to do a studless version of set 6957 Solar Snooper, a set from my childhood. Unfortunately, my mental illness kicked in, and I was left at a week before the original deadline with no model to enter. But, I wanted to build something, so I looked at Technicopedia for inspiration, and landed on set 858 Auto Engines. This set is unique, because as many Technic sets feature an engine, only this one is dedicated to engines. The model I chose was the 'Boxer" engine, as that is one that I could improve on, without adding any functions. Now, the original engine is not actually a boxer, as the pistons do not reach top dead center at the same time. In addition, a 6 cylinder boxer should have the pistons clocked 120 degrees apart, which would have been impossible to do with the parts at the time. With all of the advanced parts introduced since 1980, I was able to correct both of these issues. Now, the engine is a proper boxer, with the pistons clocked 120 degrees apart. Aside from that, there is one other major functional difference. On the original model, the distributor is just a rotating shaft that does not actually do anything. On my model, I was able to add a rotating contact piece that connects to each of the spark plug wires in sequence. The engine also has a belt driven fan, just like the original. My model also features the detailed exhaust pipes and spark plug wires. As for scale, I think my model is about 50% larger, given that I used 3 stud diameter pistons, versus the 2 stud pistons of the original. But, the scale increase allowed me to make the crankshaft and pistons much more realistic and functional. Believe it or not, the fan was actually one of the biggest sticking points for me in terms of what to use. No brick built fan felt right, so I used the fan tail from 8068, which is actually a repurposed wheel cover. Unlike the original, the belts are configured in such a way that they can be added easily, without any bent paper clips. Size comparison with 42123.
