It looks most certainly to increase the output speed. I would not do this to my own motors as i'm too much of a purist, but I do wish these motors did not have so much gearing down in them, it makes using them boring, partly because they are slow and partly becuase they have done the work of gearing down to get more power for you. Using the white clutch gear is also a waste of time on these motors. I much prefere using the old ungeared motor because of all those cools gears and pulleys spinning really fast! If I was to do a similar modification it would be to remove all gearing, mounting the output axle hole directly onto the motor shaft. I could probably shorten the whole motor by at least a stud by doing that too. Alternatively I could keep it the same size and put in a bigger, more powerful motor

Try looking though these instructions, look for how the rear arm rotates and is fixed to the back via a turntabe. I hope this helps http://www.peeron.com/scans/8862-1/ -
Lego technic challenge final
allanp replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Congratulations, i'm really glad you won it, and kinda relieved I didn't if i'm honest. I was never really that keen on this years sets (apart from the pneumatic tractor which I already have) so it's good that somebody won it that will enjoy it more. -
That looks pretty neat. Maybe you could make a marine version by wrapping pneumatic hoses around 6 air tanks (3 on each side). You might want to make it tethered to save weight or built it round a floating hull piece or use more iar tanks or something. Alternatively for a land based version you would probably be best using similar techniques employed in the onmidorectional meccanum wheels (have I spelt that right?). It's a neat idea tho.

Looks REALLY awesome from the pictures, well done. But to increase your chances of a good sale you could do with more brightly lit pictures. -

Truck Trial
allanp replied to GuiliuG's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great model, but one thing i've always wondered. Why is it that many of these trucks use those wheels? Their dimentions are good but the tyres don't have much grip. I find the power puller tyres have much more grip. -
I can see one piece missing, there maybe more (Blakbird also confirms via TBs there are some faults) so fear not folks, he has not won it just yet althouhg it's still a freaking amazing render, i'm always really impressed by his renders! Still trying to figure out how to get ldd files to render in truespace

There are a few, but one movie I considered actually walking out of was Skyline. It was just terrible!

That would explain why it appears to be opperated by a professional, because it is! -

Haha that's awesome, the performance is quite impressive. -

Instructions, old and new
allanp replied to eMHa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You're right, it was my second! I can understand the dumbing down of instructions. It could be that attention spans (not necesarily intelligence) are getting shorter or it could be that they are trying to broarden then target groups to include kids with a greater variety of levels of intelligence. I do miss those old instructions, the newer ones with only two or three parts per page are quite tedious and it seems like such a waste of paper (which I am opposed to for cost reasons, not some ignorant eco reasoning!). But this is one thing that's probably more to do with nostalgia, the enemy of forward thinking! -
power funktions on 11,1v!
allanp replied to rien's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well at least he's got it working at a less sleep inducing speed I would also say your English is far better than my Dutch Besides, in the real world electricity is not an exact science, there are sometimes surprisingly large tolerances. If the PF components really are high quality products then their tolerances SHOULD be big enough to cope with 11.1V. -
Technic Flex Cable
allanp replied to dolittle's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I really would not like to say, I can only give you my own personal experience which is that I have only had a cable become weaker due to poor design (once again I refere to the steering of the powerpuller). None of my flex cables seem to have become weaker due to any other reason such as age or lots of being used properly. I personally have no problem with buying old flex cables from bricklink if they have not been miss treaded. In my youth (when I wasn't bothered about using non lego parts), I once used a bottom E guitar string with surprisingly good results. However this method does require that you perfect the design of the system otherwise excessive wear of the rigid plastic tube and poor performance may result. -
If I may in with my opinion once again! True, it was great to see how they accomplished some things like steering out of 2x2 turntables, but I see no harm in improving things. If we stuck to turntables then what would the 8880 have been like? If a 200 piece set today can be made with 130 pieces in a couple of years then surely the chances of a 200 piece set being better in a couple of years than it is now increases (although that is sadly not always the case as I have previously mentioned). A greater diveristy of specialised parts does not ausually mean decreased complexity or innovation in technic (maybe in other themes), it usually means the opposite (I say usually because IMHO the LA does not conform to that statement). For example I want a supercar with lots of new gearbox parts, something sort of more like these (with lots of fine tuning of course).... http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=196086 ....so I can make a gearbox that is more efficient (less internal friction) and can handle greater stress and is more realistic. Such a gearbox would likely require less parts and have many specialised parts (that can also be used in other places). That is not a bad thing if it means the core values of technic (such as authentisity and complexity) are maintained, which in this case they certainly would be. Besides the parts saved in the gearbox could go towards making another cool feature, or more likely in this case enhancing the gearbox itself with some cool, complex and authentic gearchange linkages. All in all the specialised parts would allow for what is actually a more complex, robust, efficient and more authentic gearbox. That's a good thing isn't it?

Technic Flex Cable
allanp replied to dolittle's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It is also very possible that the lubrication you used made the plasic brittle, making it very intolerant to flexing. Do you remember what lubrication you used? The whirlwind rescue was fairly well designed in terms of it's flex system (unlike the powerpuller). However it is common for some adhesive to be left on the cables from the paper tape used to hold them together in the box. This can put alot of strain on the cables. -
Hypertruck
allanp replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
They are both great but I think I prefere this new faster one. You have a good balance between top speed and power, so it goes fast but can still climb. Excellent work sir! -
