I've been attending the BrickCon Public Expo in Seattle for years, but had never displayed my models before or participated in the longer 4-day Private Convention. I just completed an in-depth write-up that goes "behind the scenes" at one of the largest and oldest LEGO conventions for AFOL's. Some of my highlights: Seeing large LEGO models get re-assembled was really interesting. I loved playing the LEGO games like the "Blind Build" shown here. Displaying my models for the first time to the Public was really cool. As always, there were impressive new models on display at the Public Exhibition. LINK TO LONGER ARTICLE AND MORE PHOTOS: http://tomalphin.com/2014/10/brickcon_2014_behind_the_scenes.html I hope you find this behind the scenes look at BrickCon to be interesting. If you got to attend too, what was your highlight from the show? Sincerely, ---tom

Geisel Library: A LEGO Architecture MOC
henrysunset replied to henrysunset's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm glad to hear that you found the "making of" description and photos interesting. I expect that many other LEGO artists go through a similar process with their larger models, but usually only share the finished model :-) I decided to build this building because I was researching various "Brutalist" buildings, and this one really caught my attention. I haven't even seen it in real life! ---tom -
LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion

I guessed 375 pcs and 29.99 for flatiron. Not a terrible guess, but I am doubtful it would be 29.99 with 471 pieces. I really can't tell how they reached such a high part count. There must be a more complex interior substructure than I would have guessed. Maybe they will surprise us with a robust technics substructure like what fan LEGO builder spencer_r does in some of his larger models. I guess we will have to wait and see. I love building without instructions and would be ecstatic if the part list shows up before the set is available in stores so I can try to build the whole thing using only the photos ---tom -

Geisel Library: A LEGO Architecture MOC

Thank you to everyone for the positive response. It was a time consuming build, and it took 4 tries to get the model into it's final form. People also seemed to really like it when I displayed it at BrickCon, although the model that I actually got an award for was the Micro-scale recreation of the same building that I built on just a 6x6 baseplate. Link to a few more Microscale models at BrickCon 2014: http://tomalphin.com/2014/10/microscale.html The microscale version was a last-minute build, and I love that it captured some of the details of the original in an absolutely tiny build. It was a fun surprise to receive an award for it too! ---tom -
I'm proud to finally share my model of the Geisel Library at UCSD, which is a lovely Brutalist-style building that I re-created in the tradition of the Architecture series. The final building in the style of the Architecture series sets. The finished model is probably about 800 pieces, and it's on display this weekend at Seattle BrickCon! If you aren't lucky enough to be in Seattle this weekend, I've prepared a collection of photos of the models, as well as a exploration of the creative process as I iterated on the design before reaching this final version. Before arriving at the final design, I did a bunch of explorations including this much smaller model. some photos of the real building that I've tried to re-create in LEGO. More photos and the "making of" at: http://tomalphin.com/2014/10/geisel-library.html I hope you enjoy my first serious MOC, and I'd love to hear your feedback!!! Sincerely, ---tom

Whether it's the 24, 44 or 64 drawer model, the Akro cabinets are 20 inches (wide) x 15.8 inches (tall) x 6.4 inches (deep). They are stackable which is really convenient: The larger drawers are 4-3/8-Inch (wide) x 2-Inch (tall) x 5-1/4-Inch (deep) The smaller drawers are 2-1/8-inch (wide) x 1-1/2-inch (tall) x 5-1/4-inch (deep) Akro drawers are highly recommended, and they are pretty cost effective at Amazon or other stores. LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion
henrysunset replied to tafkatb's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I had not considered the LEGO Architecture series from that perspective, but it's definitely true of most of the models in the line. I wonder what percentage of LEGO Architecture sets are sold in the city where the building is located (presumably for tourists visiting that city) vs. purchased elsewhere in the world. For example, Villa Savoye set was definitely for sale at the gift shop, although it is a rather seldom-visited tourist site. (It doesn't help that it's over an hour from the center of Paris in a quiet suburban community...) ---tom -
LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion

I just spent a couple hours analyzing the Flatiron building photo, and re-creating part of the model to get a better idea what we can expect to find when it is officially released... LINK: http://tomalphin.com/2014/09/reverse-engineering-lego-architecture-21023-flatiron-building.html I hope you find my analysis interesting! Sincerely, --- Tom Alphin -
This set hasn't even been officially announced yet, but a photo of the box leaked online, and I've already taken some time to reverse-engineer some sections of the model, and done some analysis of the new parts. (Hint: New colors of existing parts!) So far, I predict that this will be a fun model with some nice parts. LINK: http://tomalphin.com/2014/09/reverse-engineering-lego-architecture-21023-flatiron-building.html Sincerely, --- Tom Alphin P.S. I have not shared the leaked official photos, but you can find them online with some searching.

LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion

Anyone save the photos? The Imgur link seems to be dead. Inquiring minds must know!!! I found the images. (Google search, select "photos", filter to show last 7 days worked for me.) I do not really agree with the discontent all that much. I am actually more excited to see a small-scale model that captures the *essence* of a larger building, rather than the large-scale AFOL re-creations of every architectural detail. I do think that their model for Lincoln memorial is not as strong as the one which you can buy instructions to build on ebay. That said, It looks like we may finally have a cheap source for this part: 85861 I see 36 of them, if not 72. (not sure if the top row is hollow also or not...) My only serious critique of Flatiron is the color selection. I'm excited to see the series is still alive. Another large model would certainly be appreciated! -

Great model and a great tribute to the beautiful new building and memorial complex, and the tragedies that preceded it. I've added this to my LEGO Architecture galleries on Pinterest. LINK: www.pinterest.com/tomalphin/ Sincerely, ---Tom Alphin- 19 replies

I shared my Printable LEGO Label collection with many of you in the past, but I wanted to let you know that I just completed a large update which includes many common Technic parts. I got a *lot* of comments and emails indicating that you want more labels, so I hope you enjoy. A sample of the new Technic labels. The labels look great on any organization system. I just confirmed that there has been a correction in the 2014 edition of the book as follows... The text was corrected as follows in the 2014 book: "In the Guggenheim Museum in New York, built ten years later, reinforced concrete allowed van der Rohe Frank Lloyd Wright to create new spatial experiences with curvaceous, spiraling shapes."

Had I known, I would have purchased your bricks instead of buying a second whole set.. Even though I just bought the set, I'd still consider buying a complete set of your Arch Studio bricks for a good price :-) It's a decent book though. It definitely kick-started and inspired my own LEGO 30-day challenge project last fall...

I just bought my second copy of 21050 - the LEGO Architecture Studio set. Apart from the 10$ price increase, I noticed a number of unexpected changes were made to the set, branding and packaging. I shared these changes in the following short article... LINK: http://tomalphin.com/2014/09/changes-to-21050-architecture-studio.html Have you noticed any other changes? Do other LEGO sets see this much change in the middle of the release? Discuss! Sincerely, ---tom

Book Review: "LEGO Architecture: The Visual Guide"
henrysunset replied to henrysunset's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm glad you like the book, and I definitely agree that they should have included much more of the initial designs. I would love to hear or read a much longer interview with Adam Reed Tucker, but i'd also love to hear more from Hepp (Villa Savoye) or Kobe (Big Ben, UN HQ, Imperial Hotel, Trevi Fountain.) Kobe has (in my opinion) taken the series to a whole new level in terms of detailing and overall style. -
I really like the Akro Mils drawers, but no matter what system you use, I've created a set of labels you can print-at-home on waterproof labels. LINK: http://tomalphin.com/2014/04/printable-labels-to-sort-your-lego.html Take a look and see if they will work for you! I use these labels on 3 Akro-Mils modules for my all-white Architecture brick collection (2x 44 drawer modules and 1x 64 drawer module). I also have 8 drawers upstairs which are used to store my larger all-color collection which is sorted by Part ID rather than color.
