Not sure why you substituted the alien blaster, since it is available in LDD Extended Mode. It's part 87993. When you do add it, it should be colored 315 Silver Metallic rather than 131 Silver. The transparent pieces on the alien blaster and ship should be 49 Transparent Fluorescent Green, not 311 Transparent Bright Green. The transparent pieces on the human vehicle should be 47 Transparent Fluorescent Orange rather than 182 Transparent Bright Orange. The transparent cone pieces on both sets should be part 59900 rather than 4589. 59900 is the newer version with a ridge around the base of the top stud. The windscreen of the human vehicle should be 42 Transparent Light Blue rather than 43 Transparent Blue. This is becoming possibly the most frequently-made error on LDD. The clips on the human vehicle should be part 60897 rather than 4085. Although the current version of this piece is thicker than the thin version of 60897 shown on LDD, it is still a version of 60897 (check the underside of the part in real life to verify that this is the case). All the blue parts on the human's uniform should be 321 Dark Azure, not 23 Bright Blue. Some parts of the set (specifically, the human vehicle) are simply built wrong, to be blunt about it. The piece count is even too low, despite you having extra pieces on the model due to the alien's head being brick-built. Even though the set has been released, it's generally a good idea to wait and build the set once the instructions are actually available online (or at least until you have the set yourself and can use the physical instruction booklet). That way you can avoid leaving out parts or putting parts in the wrong places. Overall, seems like you might have been a little bit too excited about building this brand-new set to pay close attention to getting colors, parts, and the overall build correct. Still, I have to admire the effort! Once the instructions do start showing up on the LEGO website I'm sure you'll be building a number of the larger sets from this theme!

The Eurobricks List of Collectible Minifigure Parts
Aanchir replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
That's because there's no part number embossed on it. Speaking of parts that are missing, I just thought to check Bricklink, and sure enough they do have the part numbers for some of the brand-new parts. Bricklink's not always reliable with part numbers, but when a part is the first of its kind and Bricklink has an actual ID number for that design (rather than a placeholder), it's generally a reliable source. The Ice Skater's hair is listed as 93552. The Kimono Girl's fan is listed as 93553. This is slightly different from the 93558 I read, but in this case I trust Bricklink's assessment more than my own. On a second glance 93553 seems more likely. The Garden Gnome's hat is listed as 93666. The Punk Rocker's hair is listed as 93563. The Monster's hair is listed as 93556. I actually have this fig, and the number is plainly legible, so I don't know why I didn't give you this number before. Didn't end up finding any more Series 4 minifigures to buy for myself, so this is all I can provide for now. But the list is doing really well as-is. EDIT: The Werewolf's bone is part 93160, and it should be noted it's the same part number that appears on the one on Lord Garmadon from the Ninjago theme-- therefore, it is not a design native to the collectible minifigures line. -
For starters, the trike body piece 76040 is now able to be dual-colored. So the lower part of the body should be colored 27 Dark Grey. Also, the visor on the helmet should be 42 Transparent Light Blue rather than 43 Transparent Blue. Both are easy problems to fix. Pretty much flawless. However, I'd like to point out that the computer screen decoration actually is available in LDD, even though it can't be applied with the decoration tool. It can be found in my LDD Decorations file, downloadable from this post. I actually am not totally sure whether the 4x3 wedge plate 48183 is correct. LDD contains a newer version of this piece, 90194, which is slightly reinforced on the underside, and the part number would suggest that it is specifically new to this year. But since I don't have that set and nobody who does have it has pointed out any difference, I don't know for sure if it uses the newer or older version. All the glass pieces should actually be 42 Transparent Light Blue rather than 43 Transparent Blue. But that's a very minor error. Great job using all the correct versions of parts between these older and newer sets!

Actually, I've seen many people who have trans-clear (40 Transparent) visors, but the thing is that this is indeed the first time they have appeared in official sets. Previous ones were probably obtained through some other channels, similar to many of the bright red "test run" pieces like Darth Vader helmets which you see on Brickshelf occasionally.
-
The arms are indeed magenta (124 Bright Reddish Violet). In nerdy color-related trivia, Bright Reddish Violet is actually in the same color family as the old pink (9 Light Reddish Violet) and dark pink (22 Medium Reddish Violet). Of course, since then, the old pink and dark pink have been replaced with bright pink (222 Light Purple) and... a new color Bricklink also calls dark pink (221 Bright Purple). Also in terms of colors, the ADU uniforms are colored 321 Dark Azure, a brand-new color for this theme. Anyway, great review, even though the pics seem awfully discolored. Love the ADU officer's expressions!

If this is the case, it's probably the same bug that makes it so that clips don't like to be centered on handles, as in the case of 48336 and 60470. The points at which the connected parts auto-align are programmed badly. It's a problem that bothers me a lot, and whenever working with clips and handles I always create a scaffold just to be sure nothing goes wrong.

The Eurobricks List of Collectible Minifigure Parts
Aanchir replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Keep in mind that a part being modled slightly differently doesn't mean it's a new part. Just compare 2x2 tiles in your collection-- you're bound to find a couple with different engraving but the same part number. I have a few variations just among my Space Police III sets here at college. However, I expect the the explorer's binoculars are indeed a new part, since they have a significant difference from older part numbers. The insides of the eyeholes are flat rather than hollowed-out-- something I prefer since it makes it look less like he has cartoon eyes (although some people might have good use for the cartoon-eye-looking ones in MOCs, such as for robots). I was just able to take a fresh look at the Kimono Girl's fan-- it seems like it's 93558. It's actually easier to read it this way than to read it with the Explorer's magnifying glass-- you just have to hold it under a bright light at an angle where the contours are easier to see. The elf's longbow is still difficult, but I think it looks like 93215. When you mark it in the list, probably better to do so without calling it a new version of an old part, since it seems like it might fulfill a significantly different purpose. Lastly, I got the sailor a while back but forgot to check his parts. His spyglass doesn't seem to have a number, but his hat's part 93557. I'm going out tonight, so I might try and pick up some more minifigures. If so, I'll tell you any new part numbers I find. -
For starters, all sets have their instructions online for free. At least, most sets since 2002 and a number of others. So if you want to build these sets from your collection there's nobody stopping you. Meanwhile, I don't even know if the sets are even targeted at people who already have significant LEGO collections. Keep in mind that they're much more likely to show up in bookstores and museum gift shops than at actual toy stores. I think they're mainly targeted at people who want a scale model of the buildings and who appreciate the iconic aesthetics of the plastic brick as a medium. Plastic replicas at museum gift shops can run you a ridiculous amount of money, so needless to say these are a similar type of "specialty models" that probably aren't targeted at the average LEGO fan. As for LEGO choosing a different building, keep in mind that this is one of the most iconic buildings in the world in this day and age. It's the same as my issue with people complaining about "filler" minifigures in the collectible minifigure series. Would you rather that LEGO just completely ignore any perfectly valid ideas that they don't think every LEGO fan will obsess over? If LEGO is confident in their ability to turn a profit on a good idea, then by all means I expect them to make that idea a reality-- even if it isn't going to be universally loved.
-
Yes. Hence why they don't ignore the conventions by which the line is defined when designing sets. If they wanted to make the buildings super-detailed, they'd release them as D2C sets like the Taj Mahal. As it is, the point of the theme is small scale models made using largely basic parts. Honestly, I can understand if people don't like this set. I don't like this set. But it'd be nice if people would look at these sets with an open mind rather than ignoring the reality of why the LEGO Architecture line exists in the first place. Remember that not everyone appreciates sets for the same reason, or based on the same values. Suggesting that they should is just small-mindedness. And suggesting that people should all buy sets for the same reasons as you do is the byproduct of the mingling of a small mind and a large ego.

Personally, looking at the photos Superkalle posted, replacing the 1x1 round bricks with 1x1 round plates could give it more of the "layered" appearance it has in real life. Then again, that would make the cost even more prohibitive, and would prevent reinforcement of the columns on the inside (unless you used the ones from LEGO Games in which case it begins getting ridiculous). Personally, I think this set is pretty well-designed, but like most of the Architecture sets it just doesn't appeal to me. The only one that appealed to me greatly so far has been the White House set, and that's perhaps because its architecture just looks most interesting to me at the shrunken scale Architecture sets tend to use. Fallingwater is a close competitor, though.

Purchase in bulk from Pick a Brick
Aanchir replied to BryanKinkel's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Are you sure? Different stores have different PAB wall selections. It's a real surprise to me if there are certain parts that no stores at all have on their PAB walls. -
One color error: the lightning bolt piece 59233 should be either 143 Transparent Fluorescent Blue or 126 Transparent Bright Bluish-Violet. The actual part is co-injected with the two colors, so there's no way to get it exact. No errors on this one, but it's kinda bothering my obsessive sensibilities that the red radar dish pieces are at different heights on their handles. The purple tiles should be 268 Medium Lilac (BL's Dark Purple) rather than 124 Bright Reddish Violet (BL's Magenta). The gold pieces should all be 297 Warm Gold (BL's Pearl Gold), not 127 Gold (BL's Pearl Light Gold). The mummy microfig should be 1 White, not 50 Phosphorescent White. This one error always surprises me, but I guess the word "phosphorescent" isn't as well-known as I tend to think it is. Again, dark purple parts should be 268 Medium Lilac rather than 124 Bright Reddish Violet, and gold parts should be 297 Pearl Gold rather than 127 Gold. Ogel's visor should be in the now-available 310 Metalized Gold rather than 127 Gold. Likewise, the chrome silver spears should be in 309 Metalized Silver. The reason these very-old colors have very-new material IDs is that it seems chrome parts didn't originally have material IDs at all-- there has never been a material ID for chrome green or chrome blue. Same chrome issue as above. But then, for all I know you might have originally built this in LDD 4.0, before Metalized Gold was available. The robot should be in 296 Cool Silver rather than 298 Cool Silver, Drum Lacquered, but other than that everything's fine. 296 Cool Silver is a weird color-- it was introduced in 2006 to replace 131 Silver. It obviously didn't do a very good job, because 131 Silver came back the very next year and 296 Cool Silver hasn't been seen since. Of course, in the BIONICLE fan community there were many very obvious complaints about 296 Cool Silver, which was significantly lighter than previous silver parts, although at that time none of us knew it was an entirely different color rather than just an inconsistency within silver parts. The bluish-purple parts should be 195 Royal Blue rather than 112 Medium Bluish Violet. The yellow jewel should be 49 Transparent Fluorescent Green rather than 44 Transparent Yellow. All of Danju's purple parts should be 268 Medium Lilac rather than 124 Bright Reddish Violet. All of the silver parts should be 131 Silver rather than 296 Cool Silver. The bluish-purple parts should be 195 Royal Blue rather than 112 Medium Bluish Violet. Part 33176 should be 143 Transparent Fluorescent Blue rather than 42 Transparent Light Blue. All the parts you have colored 296 Cool Silver, 309 Metalized Silver, or 298 Cool Silver Drum Lacquered should be instead colored 131 Silver. Rascus's gold sword should be 147 Metallic Sand Yellow rather than 139 Copper. Danju's gold sword should be 189 Reddish Gold rather than 297 Warm Gold. This kind of surprises me because you got the color right in the other set... I suppose this one was built after LDD 4.1 came out and you were limiting yourself to LDD Extended Mode's color palette? All the speckled Shadow Knight parts should be color 132, but this isn't available on LDD any way you slice it, so 316 Titanium Metallic is still OK as a replacement. First of all, you need to correct the set number. That set's 7417, not 7414. According to Bricklink, the plane's windscreen should be 40 Transparent, not 111 Transparent Brown. All the parts you have colored 106 Bright Orange should be 105 Bright Yellowish Orange. The gold sword should be 310 Metalized Gold, not 127 Gold. Ngan Pa (the guy in the black fur cap) should have his torso colored 25 Earth Orange, not 154 Dark Red. His legs should also be switched with the man in the dark orange shirt, if Bricklink is to be trusted. His arms are colored correctly, though. Nope. The tan parts should be 5 Brick Yellow, not 283 Light Nougat (BL's Light Flesh). Though for some reason your screenshot looked to be the correct color, so I honestly wasn't expecting to find any errors here. Additionally, the 1x1 round plate in the center should be 297 Warm Gold (BL's Pearl Gold), not 182 Transparent Bright Orange (BL's Trans-Orange). All other parts are the correct colors.

Just wanted to share that in the Cars animation for the LEGO home page, you can see how Lightning McQueen is built. It's pretty complex, at least for a set that size-- I'm impressed! Tiny Turbos never did anything quite that devious SNOT-wise.
-
Actually, the new fire piece debuted in 2009 in some Power Miners sets. In 2010 it started to become more standard, though.
-
I've seen good ones made out of Technic. With Hero Factory joints I don't know if it'd be quite as feasible. But I may try someday.
-
The tools in this file are not the right color. They should be 27 Dark Grey, not 2 Grey. The plane's front wheel should be 40 Transparent rather than 2 Grey. The plane's rear wheels should be 1 White rather than 2 Grey. The minifigure caps should use part 4485 rather than 86035. The window should be brick 3855 rather than brick 4034. I recommend that in the future, when building a set, keep the Bricklink inventory for that set open in another window. This way, you can easily check any colors you're unsure about. Bricklink's colors aren't always listed correctly in inventories, but in general some of these errors could have been prevented this way. All your other files seem to be built correctly, though.

Please show me how to make this!
Aanchir replied to Drainpipe's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Technically, if you want it to match the original MOC, the 1x2x1 panels (brick 4865) should be 42 Transparent Light Blue rather than 43 Transparent Blue. But it's a stylistic decision in any event. -
Flower arrangment Mother's Day
Aanchir replied to persnickety's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
LEGO's traditional color spectrum should also probably be observed. Here, it's fairly clear that Bright Green is the best fit for its position (between Bright Yellowish Green and Bright Bluish Green), even if it isn't as common as other "bright" colors: Note that dark tan is Sand Yellow, old brown is Earth Orange, and Dark Red, Dark Orange, and Dark Green are the only ones in this spectrum actually called Dark-- other colors AFOLs call dark fall under the Earth label. Old Pink and Dark Pink are Light Reddish Violet and Medium Reddish Violet, respectively, whereas magenta-- the only of the three colors still with us today-- is Bright Reddish Violet. Please, please don't ask me what Brick Red was ever used for, because I have to admit I have no idea. It's color #4, placing it sequentially with Brick Yellow but also near a number of other obscure colors which LDD may not even be rendering correctly to appear as they do in real life. Also don't ask me about Light Brick Yellow-- sequentially, it's probably from a girls' theme, but I couldn't give you any examples. -
For parts where stickers are reasonable, there will be stickers. For minifigures where prints are most reasonable, there will be prints. Rest assured that it doesn't seem to be like the Speed Racer theme where huge sheets of tiny stickers were used on all scores of pieces. Rather, stickers seem to be used primarily on large, smooth areas of pieces (as well as the occasional tinier sticker like on 1x2 cheese slopes). And also, there seem to be very few of them-- few enough that the sets wouldn't look much worse or even much different if you chose not to apply the stickers.

Flower arrangment Mother's Day
Aanchir replied to persnickety's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I think since persnickety mentioned giving it as a present he wants one he can purchase through DesignByMe. Thankfully, that model is purchasable if you replace all the 37 Bright Green parts with the correct 28 Dark Green. -
The brown suitcase should be 25 Earth Orange (BL's Brown) rather than 38 Dark Orange. That seems to be your only color error. The hose piece 57539 should be 315 Silver, the only silver color used in 2011 sets. Yes, Bricklink calls it Flat Silver, which existed prior to 315's debut. But Bricklink is often dreadfully inaccurate when it comes to metallic and transparent colors. The Bright Orange ball cap should be part 86035, not 4485. It's a subtle difference, and on LDD it's not visible at all. I also see some decorations that you can't normally get with the decorations tool. Are you using my decorations file from the LDD Reference topic, or generating the parts with LDD Manager? Either way, nice to see people using either tool to access those otherwise-hidden decorations! Also, I'm so glad you went to the trouble of thoroughly listing every change you made from the official set. One key error: the color you used for the stem is 37 Bright Green, a color Bricklink also calls Bright Green. "Regular" green is actually 28 Dark Green. It's an easy mistake to make, but one you'll surely get used to if you do a lot in green.

I'll concede that. If LEGO were going to alter the spelling of the real-word names for Hero Factory villains, I'd expect something that flows better than Yetii or Isical. The "Ulti" prefix is also a bit awkward in some places, although I'm sure many people would love a naming scheme similar to that where we could ditch the considerably-less-imaginative pattern many people are predicting, where the numbering system of upgrades continues for years to come.

What minifigs are we missing - post your detailed suggestions here
Aanchir replied to CopMike's topic in Special LEGO Themes
You didn't link to a picture for the Steve minifigure. What should a Steve look like? Anyway, I agree a mariachi would be a cool fig, especially as it would be a good opportunity to reuse the sombrero piece from the Series 2 Maraca Man in an alternate color. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 4 discussion
Aanchir replied to legokuate's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Yes, according to the instructions. There's really no other way of making a minifig skirt from a flat piece of cloth without any stitching. -
Now, now. I agree the list is fake, and the names you mentioned are bad, bad, bad. But I don't like it when people start throwing around the word "lazy" in places where it doesn't apply. "Lazy" would mean not going through as much work as they should. In the case of Yetii and Kristal, those names spelled normally (Yeti and Crystal) could be perfectly fine for villains. So if LEGO released sets called Yetii and Kristal, that's an example of going to too much effort to make the names unique (and thus making them look absolutely dreadful). An idea being creative or unique doesn't make it a good idea. When a new collectible minifigures series comes out, there's always someone who suggests that "LEGO is running out of ideas" or that "the latest series isn't creative". This is completely laughable. Ideas are an inexhaustible resource-- they can never and will never run out. Good ideas are harder to come by but equally plentiful. But ideas that everyone likes? Those aren't nearly as common. And a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that an idea they don't like can't have had any work or creative thought put into it. This is not the case-- the most creative ideas, incidentally, are often the wackiest and most controversial, like Ninjago. Yet these are also the ideas routinely blamed for "lacking creativity". Apologies for the rant, but the misuse of these accusations tends to bother me a great deal. And it happens in the LEGO community (and other fan communities) far too often.
