The Penguin's Harry Potter minifigures..... )
Tereglith replied to The Penguin's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
You managed to pull off all of these figures very well! I'm especially a fan of the Madam Pomfrey. I would have preffered Slughorn with a mustache, but I don't like the movies that much. Outstanding job. Ten points to whatever house you're in -
Does Space Police III promote racism and xenophobia?
Tereglith replied to Sonic Screwdriver's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
There is a fairly good reason that most non-liscensed themes involve non-humans as the villians - It's because Watchdog groups composed of American moms that have discovered the internet are more concerned about their children being influenced to kill other people than learning that things that aren't human are bad. In other words, leaving out the human-vs-human and having it mainly be human-vs-other means that LEGO is less likely to be sued, because people are more offended when a toy "teachers children how to kill" than when it "teaches children to be racist", even though I doubt that any toys cause anything of the sort (except possibly video games, which engage the mind in a different way, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I really dislike America for the very reason that it's full of watchdog groups with lawyers. -
Funnily enough, that's my most recent viewing as well. I would totally disagree with you on your judgement of it, though. It's a great piece of magical realism, with wonderful animation and a clever script. There's also a wonderful symbolic interplay between squares and circles, if you care to look for it. They managed to tell the best love story on film of 2009 in the first ten minutes, using no words. It's an all around outstanding film.

The Falcon has the most hotly-debated dimensions of any ship in the Star Wars universe. Nobody's quite sure how long it is, as there are about four different high-level canon references to its length. I wouldn't go around basing any scales on it. Plus, the midi falcon is somewhat enlongated, which would throw off that scale again. I don't think that midi has any real definition other than the one that Siegfried offered.

After a long drought of Community Build entries, this is certainly a great comeback for them! A wonderfully busy MOC you've got here! There's so many characters packed into such a small space, and it really captures the feel of a cheap food court. It reminds me of the cafeteria at my school, actually, although I'd bet that the grilled ex-parrot is better than school sheppards pie. Once again, great job!

Rubiks Solver
Tereglith replied to roamingstop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It solves four times as fast as I can! Geez! That must have taken a while to build. It goes so fast that I can barely tell how it's solving it! I think it must be using Lars Petrus method, though, and extremely effectively at that. -
I think this is perfectly feasible: The fridge was lead-lined ("for superior insulation". That cracked me up), which would prevent radiation from killing him, and it also wouldn't have melted because of the distance from the bomb and the high melting point of the materials that it was composed of. If he braced himself against the sides of the fridge, he could have prevented being banged around too much while flying, and he was far enough away from the bomb when he landed, and got away quick enough, that he wouldn't have gotten lethal doses of radiation. He could realistically have come out with some bruised elbows and a few rads in him as the only damage. This is a spare, but nice, vignette. Your fridge is the perfect size.

These are neat! They'd look right at home in a minifig art museum. I admire anyone with the patience to pull off a string of incompletely connected bricks as long as that!

Hey, I conidered asking if he remembered any Dewbacks, but decided that the Death Star scene would be more memorable In any case, a bit of research has found that, if released in 2004, they were the Special Editions. The boxed sets that contain the original editions were released in 2006.

Ah, two feet of snow is very appropriate for the start of Empire. You'll enjoy it. Can you remember what it looked like when the Death Star blew up on your DVD? Was there a ring going out from the center, or not? A ring means it's special edition, no ring means it's original release.

The Sherlock Holmes soundtrack. Zimmer at his best.

I'm terribly sorry, but the demands of academic team, theater, and my novel mean that I will probably not have time to continue posting in the story. I'm dropping out of the game. Computerbug, you can keep Dave around as an NPC if you like, having him continue to act as an agent of Borgiss. I would love to continue (and perhaps have Dave reform and turn good, eventually), but I'm simply unable to fit in writing the posts (which takes quite a while) with everything else that I'm doing.

I intend to go see this. It looks very interesting, and I'm generally a fan of Burton's work (except Willy Wonka and Sweeney Todd, both of which he butchered). The premise reminds me a bit of "The Looking Glass Wars", but I think that it'll be different enough from the book to be, well, different. Me too! Love the original, and Burton's stop motion.

This is a great creation all alone, but I like the expanded version even better, with the Anglia and the spidery out house. All it needs is some of those pesky gnomes! Wonderful job.

What do you look for most in a lego set?
Tereglith replied to sok117's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Since at heart I'm still a 6-year-old, I do look for the playability in the out-of-the-box following-the-instructions model, and I do play with them. I'll also look at minifigures and the number of parts, in a smaller set, which leads to much deliberation when buying $10 sets (the price point I buy the most at). For larger sets of forty dollars and above, I also consider what other sets or combinations of smaller sets I might buy with the money, and weigh how much I want them against how much I want the large set. Sometimes, but rarely, I'll buy something just for the figures, like Soldier's fort. And sometimes, of course, a set will just jump out and say "YOU MUST BUY ME", like Tower Raid from Fantasy Castle, or Winter Toy Shop, and I buy it without deliberation. -
My thoughts exactly! They were actually quite afraid of that in the eighties. Goes to show... I suppose that I've also got sort of a future world, not so much a story as a design asthetic. It's sort of like the original prinicple for Star Wars, a "used universe", with everything exposed, but some things are much newer and shinier. A good example would be my Space Police Baracuda. I would like to flesh out the story sometime.

Which Is Your Favorite 2010 Licensed Theme?
Tereglith replied to curtisrlee's topic in LEGO Licensed
POP is looking pretty cool, with the ostriches and camels. Ben 10 is crap. Toy Story is, I confess, the most levels of meta- that I have ever seen. However, my highest calling as a nerd is, and always will be, Harry Potter, and therefore, just from the set list (Be still my heart! The Burrow!), I think that it will probably be my favorite licensed theme this year. -
Tank, I'll buy it. Heck, anything, I'll buy it. SIGNED!

I've got a steampunk alternate history in which Isaac Newton discovered that ancient magic really does exist while working on his alchemy research (which he did do quite a lot of). Later scientist-magicians researched it and figured out the fundamental laws of magic at about the same time that the Industrial Revolution hit England. Thus, steam power/clockwork mechanisms and enchanted items are in a battle for technological and economic supremacy. I've made several custom figures from around this time, including my Medieval League of Evil and my sigfig, Conrad, who is both a sorceror and a mechanic.

Yep, Avatards. I think one of my friends qualifies to be their chief (he's trying to learn Na'vi. Gimme a break already. It's only got a thousand words.) As for your other points, I really don't see how the visuals can get any better. 90% of the movie was animated, yet you always felt like you were watching something live-action. When you think about it, it should have been nominated for best Animated Film. I don't see any potential plots either, it really seems pretty self-contiained... Of course, there is that ^ :P

Wow, this MOC went from being really 'meh' to being really awesome! I love the greebles on the bottom! As for a windshield, I dunnno. You've obviously picked up some SPIII sets since you made the first version -which ones do you have now?

I've been up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. (I live in Florida), and to pretty much every Caribbean island you can think of. I've also been to Panama for a brief while and a Mexican seaport. I'm going to go to Canada this summer. I haven't really been outside of North America, though. I'd love to visit England and Ireland sometime.

Wrong on both counts. If inflation is factored in (as it should be, it makes lists like that infinitely more accurate), then Avatar is still somewhere down in the twenties in the rankings. Gone with the Wind is first and Star Wars is second (as it should be). The reason that people have gone to see Avatar is that they've heard the effects are outstanding, which they are. The reason that people go to see sequels is because they like the characters and the plot. Avatar doesn't have characters and plot. It has charicatures and Pocahantas. Why would anybody go to see Avatar 2 in theaters? If they want to go back to Pandora, they can just watch Avatar on DVD on their big screen TVs (which will probably be 3D by then). Only the die-hard Avatards would show up. No, Avatar's plot IS Pocahontas's I lol'd when I saw this.

World Racers Summer 2010
Tereglith replied to The Green Brick Giant's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
This theme looks like a mixed bag. There are some sets that look pretty good (like the racecars one) and some that look like they have the potential to be horrible (the ice one, fr'instance, with the thornax launchers). If it were sort of an empty year for LEGO, I might buy some of the smaller sets, but seeing these on a store shelf between new Atlantis and Kingdoms, I'm not gonna purchase any of them. -
Sorry that's half my fault. I can simply take out the last paragraph of my last post, if we would like the story to remain above ground. Computerbug, your thoughts? You are leading the game, you can give us general directions if you like.
