MOC: Lego Ideas - Space Shuttle (Saturn V Scale)
KingsKnight replied to KingsKnight's topic in Special LEGO Themes
White is a good alternate color if you want to use the same design. @shopsmart (might have the username wrong) has a design to make an orange tank using available parts, but the design will be slightly different. You could also make a dark red or tan tank with his designs with a couple small changes.- 156 replies

Hey all, I made a sticker sheet for pretty much all variants and eras of the Orbiter. I added it to a google drive folder with my other Space Shuttle files to make it easy to find: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1qaZ65qgg1iyzjB215oiaOj9k9cbCB6Cp?usp=sharing I would also highly recommend looking at this link for reference on which stickers to use and where to place them: http://axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Space-Shuttle-External-Markings.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3ALlFONPVIVCddrfOTLUN9Cc_cLf_0u3zuliSsiR7nKBygPY16SPe953M- 156 replies

I don't have a parts list, but on the facebook page mentioned above, I posted the Stud.io file. This should contain everything you need to make a bricklink parts list. I hope this link will work. It's the original post where I shared the file (Only for personal use please)... https://www.facebook.com/groups/saturnvmods/permalink/449221398816450/ BTW, if you're searching for this or any of my other files on the facebook page, I started each filename with "KingsKnight" to make it easier to find.- 156 replies

I finally got around to making instructions for the Launch Pad Display for the Space Shuttle. This is an upgrade over the one in the original Lego Ideas Update section (again sort of a 2.0). It's not a full launch pad, but a segment of it (16x32 studs) just for display. However, the elements on it can be used for a full launch pad display if someone wanted to expand on it. And again, this is for personal use only please. Lego Ideas Space Shuttle Launch Pad Display Instructions PDF I hadn't planned on instructions for that. That was sort of a dummy satellite. If you'd like I can try and recreate the original build if I can remember it.- 156 replies

Oh either will work. Not sure if I mentioned it, but I'm putting together a set of this for my friend, so I had to be specific based on the parts I have/bought. In actuality, you can swap out whichever clips work best. I will say though, that I use the old style clip on the tail because it looks cleaner. It looks more like a smooth line. But it's a minor design thing.- 156 replies

Hi all, I finally sat down and compiled instructions for my Lego Ideas Space Shuttle. With the help of @Shiva and @shopsmart, as well as others on Facebook, this version has been improved over the original Ideas submission, so it's stronger and more stable (I'm calling it v2.0). Some notes on these instructions: - Contains instructions for the Orbiter, External Tank, Solid Rocket Boosters, a simple display stand, and the Astrovan (I will try and post the Launch Pad from the Ideas Update at a later date). - The parts lists are at the end of each section. - This is my first time using instruction software, so I'm learning. It's low resolution and I had to fix a lot of the pages in photoshop and add necessary notes (and missing parts!). Hopefully I can put out an updated version that looks cleaner. - I had to pick specific colors since I’m putting together an actual set (for a friend's birthday), but all of the internal colors can be whatever you want to help save on costs. - This is for personal use only please. Thanks, KingsKnight Lego Ideas Space Shuttle Instructions PDF- 156 replies

I love what you've done here for the nose cone. My original had several weak connections. I made a stronger version based on your great design. I had to make a few adjustments to make it work with dark orange pieces near the top. I also added even more strength by attaching it to the center using 2 wheel axles (part 30000 "Brick, Modified 2 x 2 with Pins and Axle Hole") I also had to adjust to few things because the base/attachment point of my nose cone starts at a slightly different level from your design, but overall I'm sure you can see the similarities.- 156 replies

Yeah, I really want a nice new shuttle, and I'm hoping they only said "no" because they're working on one. One can hope.- 156 replies

Yeah true it's busy. It's just one solution. You can make the wing cleaner by using 3 triangle parts instead of alternating with the other corner tile. Those parts are so new right now that they're hard to come by. And I agree with the color. Hopefully they make more colors for that part. I doubt the old style parts would stop Lego from making it a set. They pretty much always rework the model anyway, and they probably would have figured out an alternative (maybe even using the triangle tiles since they probably knew they existed before we did!)- 156 replies

I also wanted to work out what the wing might look like using the new triangle pieces instead of the old discontinued wedge plates. Until these new triangle parts existed, there wasn't a way to get the correct length 45 degree angle without gaps unless you used the old discontinued wedge parts. The new parts have the advantage of letting you make the bottom of the wing all black, and also letting you make more of the wing SNOT.- 156 replies

I have updates. I replaced the complex old internal structure of the ET with the streamlined and stable new one. With the extra space I was able to update some of the colors to the correct dark orange (I had to use part 2577 Brick, Round Corner 4 x 4 Full Brick since the macaroni version (48092) doesn't come in dark orange). I was also able to rework the bottom to make it more stable. It looks a lot better and is so much more secure to handle than the old version. I later went in and adjusted the bottom part further. It's still a work in progress, but I was able to get the color of the tank at the bottom to be all dark orange. Sorry these aren't the greatest photos, but this is how it went together:- 156 replies

That looks great Shiva! I wish they made those 1x3 curved slopes in dark orange. That was my original approach. I will be keeping my eye out for that in a future set if it ever happens. That intertank looks clean.- 156 replies

Since Lego doesn't make 1x3 curved slopes in Dark Orage, I wanted to figure out an alternate build that would work in the right color. It's not perfect, but it's exactly the right diameter needed.- 156 replies

Awesome! Before you buy for the External Tank, I'm still working on simplifying it as you can see in the image posted a couple posts back. It should make it cheaper and stronger.- 156 replies

I think I figured out a way to make the bottom skirt on the SRB a little less awkward. Lego doesn't make a white half barrel with axle hole, so right now you have to use one with an odd color. But it can be slightly less odd by using a gray half barrel. In that color it only comes without an axle hole, so you have to flip some of the parts and make some creative connections. You also have to use a 12L axle instead of a 16L axle. Let me know what you think.- 156 replies

The stacks in the mockup actually work ok, but probably not a strong as I imagine the 1x2x5s (in the concept) will be. I just didn't have those longer pieces on hand. That propeller might work too! I thought the bottom had an odd shaped lip, but it looks to be just a brick width. It wouldn't lock to the axle the same as the 1x5 technic plates, but I noticed in my rough mockup that it may not even need connecting to that axle at those points like I thought. I'll double check but the the cone parts and the 2x2 round bricks may be enough of a connection to that axle, and the cross members can be simplified to a 1x3 brick on all sides. I hope this is the case because that could really simplify it even more.- 156 replies

I’ve been working on a simpler structure for the External Tank. It seems to be stable based on a mock-up I built. The white cones (part 6233) are a more elegant solution to going from odd to even bricks. The plates in the center (I've colored red) are actually 1x5 technic plates with axle hole (part 32124), so they're locked into place with the long center axle and attached sturdily to the sides. It’s 150 fewer pieces than the original version. concept: https://i.imgur.com/pzvT7Nk.jpg rough mockup: https://i.imgur.com/nkMpttX.jpg- 156 replies

Hi Ashchord. Welcome to Eurobricks. There's a super clear shot of the bottom of the External Tank (ET) in the linked photos. If you need clearer ones I can try and take some. If you follow nosecone images in reverse, you'll see how it all goes together. The landing gear was made of separate pieces you attach. I can show you what those look like. Although the assumption is that most people would want to display it as a full stack without the landing gear. I don't have a parts list, but if there's certain parts you can't identify, I can look for the part number. For buying parts, my go-to is bricklink, although it gets pricey, so many other people have built up pieces over time by buying sets.- 156 replies

Wow that looks so clean Shiva! It vastly simplifies what I had, which was way too complex. The External Tank is the area I most want to improve upon. The waterwheel idea is great! I didn't know that part existed. I think yours must be vastly more stable, and the angles look much more uniform. Edit: You can alternate 35787s with 27263s and not have to buy as many of them.- 156 replies

KingsKnight replied to KingsKnight's topic in Special LEGO Themes
As for the wings, Lego has since come out with a new 45 degree tile (part 35787) which may clean up the wing design a lot. When I made the wings, I needed an uninterrupted 45 degree angle. The smaller wedge plates have notches at the corners and the and the larger wedge plates were either too short or too long, so I used the older wing plates. But the new tile should make it look nice and clean, although the right colors only come in the large ferrari speed champions set, so it might be a while before they're widely available.- 156 replies

It's been great to see what you and others are doing with this build. The External tank needs a lot of improvement. At the time I was just doing what I could to get a working prototype, but I know it's too complex for what it needs to be. Would love to see more about what you've done to the tank and orbiter!- 156 replies

Hi all, I was so bummed when my idea wasn't selected, but it's been so inspiring seeing what you guys have done with it here! I've been incredibly busy, but I've been meaning to take some reference photos to share. I hope they'll be helpful to anyone who wants to try it out. Some parts are really complex, so if anyone wants to figure out how to simplify it, please share! Oh wow that looks fantastic ScottishDave! Glad you were able to piece it together! For those asking, I'd like to figure out a way to share the build without giving away the file (in case a competing company steals it). But I'd like to post some better photos of the build so that those who want can still build it. I'd also like to see if others have ways of improving the build. I've already begun making small changes myself. I'll try to get some stuff together and post it when I get a chance. Thanks all for the support.- 156 replies

Thanks so much! I'm actually working on a physical model of this before I share in case it falls apart. There are several parts that don't exist in the right color, so I'll have to substitute with a different color.- 156 replies
